10月下旬の土曜日、在モントリオール日本国総領事館開設50周年を記念してクラシックコンサートが開かれた。会場となったマギル大学構内のTanna Schulich Concert Hallは、小雨が降る中にもかかわらず、開場まもなく満席となった。演奏するのは、日本から招かれた才能あふれる若き音楽家たち—大萩 康司さん（ギター），瀬尾 和紀さん（フルート），鍵冨弦太郎さん（バイオリン）である。まずはギターとフルートの共演で幕が開けた。大胆で繊細なフルートとダイナミックなギターの息はぴったりと合っていて、彼らの演奏を初めて聴く聴衆が、息をのんでぐいぐいと演奏に引き込まれていくのがわかる。続いて、流れるように優雅なヴァイオリンのソロには、みなうっとりと聴き惚れている。様々な組み合わせでソロ、デュオ、トリオの演奏が続き、夢心地のままに演奏曲全てが終了した時には、スンタディングオベーションとなり、惜しみない拍手と歓声がいつまでも3人に送られた。コンサート終了後、多忙のスケジュールにかかわらず、快くココモントリオールのインタビューに応えてくれた。

3人の共演は、今回初めてだそうですね。大萩 康司（以下、大萩）「そうです。僕と瀬尾さん、僕と鍵冨君は共演経験があるんですが、瀬尾さんと鍵冨君は今回初めての顔合わせなんです」

瀬尾 和紀（以下、瀬尾）「12年ほど前、僕と大萩君はパリ国立高等音楽院に留学していたんですが、その頃に彼の方から一緒に室内楽をやりたい、と声をかけてくれたのが始まりです 。」

大萩「鍵冨君とは、デビューCDのレコード会社が同じで、プロデューサーも同じでした。それで何度か共演の機会もありました」

コンサートでは、3人の息がぴったりでしたが、事前に日本で練習する時間はどのくらいあったんですか？大萩「まったくなかったです。初演のバンクーバーの前日に、初めて3人で練習しました。モントリオールの前に、バンクーバー、トロントで演奏してきましたが、やっぱり回を重ねるごとに良くなってきています。モントリオールで三人の感覚が一つになった瞬間を感じて、『光が見えた』って思いました」

鍵冨弦太郎（以下、鍵冨）「客席から歓声が上がったりして盛り上がったし、僕らの気分も盛り上がって、とても楽しく演奏できました。モントリオールのお客さんは、ノリがいいですね」

これからの活動予定、目標を教えて下さい。大萩「今年は海外活動の多い一年でした。加えて、デビュー１０周年という節目の年だったこともあり、今年12月から、故郷の九州でツアーをやります。１２月は台湾でレオ・ブローウェルとホアキン・ロドリーゴのギター・コンチェルトもやりますよ」

鍵冨「来年は、新潟で行われるラ・フォル・ジュルネという大きな音楽祭があるので、今からとても楽しみにしています」

瀬尾「国内外のコンサートはもちろんですが、講習会やＣＤのプロデュースにも力を入れています。毎夏、山口県でミュージックアカデミーを開催していて、フルートだけではなく他の楽器も取り入れて、第一線で活躍する講師が教えています。そちらにも力を入れて行きたいですね。」

大萩 康司（おおはぎやすじ）宮崎県出身。８才よりギターを始め、高校卒業後パリのエコールノルマル、コンセルヴァトワールで学ぶ。国内外で、ジャンルを問わず様々な音楽とのコラボレーションに積極的に取り組んでいる。

瀬尾和紀（せおかずのり）福岡県出身。10才より父からフルートの手ほどきを受ける。17才で渡仏しパリ国立高等音楽院に留学。主要な国際コンクールにて多数受賞している。ソリストとして国内外で広く活動している。

鍵冨弦太郎（かぎとみげんたろう）新潟県出身。５才よりヴァイオリンを始め、早くからその才能を発揮し、様々なコンクールで受賞する。桐朋女子高校学校音楽科（男女共学）を首席で卒業。国内外の演奏や、いろいろな楽器との共演も意欲的に取り組んでいる。

Canada Classic Music Concert Performers

Yasuji Ohagi (Guitar), Kazunori Seo (Flute), Gentaro Kagitomi (Violin)

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the existence of the General Consulate of Japan in Montreal, a classical music concert was held on a Saturday in late October at Mcgill’s Tanna Schulich Concert Hall. Regardless of the light rain that was falling that Saturday, the room was packed. For this musical performance, 3 talented young Japanese musicians were invited : Yasuji Ohagi (guitar,) Kazunori Seo (flute) and Gentaro Kagitomi (violin.) As an opening act, Yasuji Ohagi and Kazunori Seo played together. The performance, where the two musicians played in delightful harmony with each other, combined both boldness and sensitivity. The audience, hearing their music for the first time, got more and more excited. Eventually, they were joined by an elegant violin solo, which reached everyone’s heart as they listened closely. All of these fantastic performances (solo, duo, trio) went on, and then, in the blink of an eye or like waking from a dream, the performance was over. A much deserved standing ovation followed. In spite of their busy schedule, the three musicians gladly accepted to be interviewed by Coco Montreal after their concert.

I heard that this is the first time in which the three of you performed together.

Mr. Ohagi: Yeah, I performed with Mr. Seo and Mr. Kagitomi separatly before. As for Mr. Seo and Mr. Kagitomi, they just started playing together.

Mr. Seo: We have played together since we studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and 12 years ago, we thought “Why don’t we play chamber music together?”

Mr. Ohagi: Me and Mr. Kagitomi have the same producer, and our debut CD were released by the same record company. Therefore, we had several occasions to perform together.

The three of you seem so comfortable playing together, how much time approximately did you practice while in Japan?

Mr. Ohagi: Actually, we didn’t really have time to practice! We began practicing together just the day before our first performance, which was in Vancouver. Before this concert in Montreal, we had one in Vancouver and Toronto; we seemed to get better every time. Then, in Montreal, the three of us started to play as one and we thought “We are starting to see the light.”

Mr. Kagitomi: Our spirit seemed to rise every time the audience cheered us on, and because of that we were able to create this musical performance and to enjoy playing as well. Montreal showed us a very warm welcome.

Would you please tell us of your future projects?

Mr. Ohagi: I had and will have many more opportunities to perform overseas this year. Also, it’s the 10th anniversary of my career as a musician. In December, I am going on tour in the Kyushu region, which is where my hometown is. Also, in December, I am going to Taiwan to perform a guitar concert with Leo Brower and Joaquin Rodrigo.

Mr. Kagitomi: Next year, there is a big music festival taking place in Niigata called La Folle Journée, and I am really looking forward to it.

Mr. Seo: I also have numerous concerts in and outside of Japan, and I’m planning to put in some work for a new CD. I also hold a seminar, which is not only about flute but on various instruments, in the Yamaguchi prefecture Musical Academy, a school offering so many great teachers.

En honneur du 50e anniversaire du Consulat général du Japon à Montréal, un concert de musique classique a eu lieu à la salle de concert Tanna Schulich de l’Université McGill vers la fin du mois d’octobre. Malgré une légère averse de pluie, la salle était pleine à craquer. Pour ce concert, trois talentueux jeunes musiciens japonais furent invités : Yasuji Ohagi (guitare), Kazunori Seo (flûte) et Gentaro Kagitomi (violon). Une pièce jouée par Yasuji Ohagi et Kazunori Seo ouvrit le concert. Cette pièce musicale, à la fois audacieuse et sensible, démontra toute l’harmonie musicale dont ces deux musiciens sont capables. L’auditoire, pour la première en contact avec cette musique, était de plus en plus enthousiaste. Puis, un solo de violon d’une grande éloquence vint s’ajouter au duo, et tout le public fut littéralement hypnotisé. Toutes ces pièces musicales (solo, duo et trio) se succédèrent, puis, soudainement, le concert était terminé, donnant l’impression au public qu’il émergeait d’un rêve captivant. Une ovation debout suivit. En dépit de leur horaire chargé, nos trois musiciens ont accepté, avec un sourire, d’accorder une entrevue à Coco Montréal.

Je crois que c’est la première fois que vous jouez ensemble?

M. Ohagi: En effet. J’ai eu l’occasion de jouer avec M. Seo et M. Kagitomi séparément. Cependant, M. Seo et M. Kagitomi ont commencé à jouer ensemble tout récemment.

M. Seo: Nous étudions au Consérvatoire National Supérieur de Paris ensemble, et depuis ce temps nous voulions jouer ensemble. Il y a 12 ans, nous nous

sommes dit « Pourquoi ne pas jouer de la musique de chambre ensemble ».

M. Ohagi: Moi et M. Kagitomi avons le même producteur, et nos premiers CD ont été lancés par la même compagnie de disque. Donc, nous avons eu plusieurs occasions de jouer de la musique ensemble.Vous donnez l’impression d’être si à l’aise lorsque vous jouez ensemble. Combien de temps avez-vous répété au Japon?

M. Ohagi: En fait, nous n’avons pas vraiment eu le temps de répéter! Nous avons commencé à répéter seulement la journée avant notre première représentation, que nous avons donnée à Vancouver. Avant le concert de Montréal, nous avions des représentations à Vancouver et à Toronto, et nous semblions améliorer à chaque fois. Puis, lors de celle-ci à Montréal, nous avons eu l’impression d’atteindre l’unisson que nous souhaitions, et nous nous sommes dit : « Nous commençons à voir la lumière au bout du tunnel »!

M. Kagitomi: Au fur et à mesure que le public nous encourageait, nous étions de plus en plus enthousiastes et concentrés, et grâce à cela, nous étions en mesure de créer ce moment musical, et d’apprécier le processus. Montréal nous réserva un accueil des plus chaleureux.

Pouvez-vous nous parler de vos projets futurs?

M. Ohagi: J’ai eu et j’aurai encore beaucoup d’occasions de faire des représentations à l’étranger. De plus, je fête le 10e anniversaire de ma carrière musicale cette année. En décembre, je pars en tournée dans ma province natale de Kyushu, et je vais à Taiwan pour donner un concert de guitare aux côtés de Leo Brower et Joaquin Rodrigo.

M. Kagitomi: L’année prochaine, il y a un festival important à Niigata du nom de La Folle Journée, et j’ai très hâte.

M. Seo: J’ai l’occasion de donner plusieurs concerts tant au Japon qu’ailleurs dans le monde, et je prévois travailler sur un nouveau CD. De plus, je participe à un séminaire, qui ne porte pas seulement sur la flûte, et qui a lieu à l’Académie Musicale de la préfecture de Yamaguchi, une institution où enseignent de nombreux grands professeurs. Yasuji OhagiBorn in Miyazaki prefecture, Ohagi began to play the guitar when he was 8 years old. He went abroad and went to the École Normale de Musique de Paris in Paris, and also developed his musical skills at the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris. He strives to collaborate with various musicians all over the word, regardless of musical genre.

Kazunori SeoBorn in Fukuoka prefecture, he began to learn to play the flute from his father at the age 10. At 17, he went to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. He won numerous important internationals prizes, and he has a brilliant solo career at home as well as abroad.

Gentaro KagitomiBorn in Niigata prefecture, he began to play the violin at the age 5. He rapidly showed talent, winning various contest and graduating from Toho Gakuen School of Music with the highest grades. He performs all around and outside Japan, and frequently collaborates with other musicians playing various instruments.

年の瀬。寒い時期に母がよく作った「のっぺい汁」を思い出してホームシックです。そんなにこが会いに行くのは、モントリオールのペギーおばさん。２０１０年最後を飾る「モントリオールのナイスガイ（レディー）」は、ペギーおばさんをおいて他にありません！

ペギーおばさんこと、ペギー・リーガンさんは、ケルトの素朴な伝統菓子であるスコーンやショートブレッドのお店「GRYPHON」のオーナー。お店はNDG地区にあり、中に入れば、食欲を刺激するバターの豊潤な香りが、これでもかとばかり大胆に迎えてくれます。スコットランドとアイルランドに起源を持つ、伝統菓子のスコーンとショートブレッド。ペギーさんのお母様直伝「おふくろの味」レシピは、伝統の味を素直に再現した素朴な味わい。ティータイム用の小ぶりなスコーンにぴったり、とウィンクしながらペギーさんが注いでくれたのは、「Celtic Confort」という名のブレンドティー。Confortの名の通り、お茶が通り抜けていく体の内側から、穏やかな温かさがじわじわと心に届いていきます。１５年前にオープンしたこのお店。なんと２年前から、日本に輸出も始めたそうです。ケベックの良質なメープルを利用した、「メープルショートブレッド」は、日本でも固定ファンを得ているのよ、とペギーさんは笑顔を益々大きくして教えてくれました。　　　

ペギーさんがサーブしてくださるお茶をいただきスコーンに舌鼓みを打つと、ホームシックにしおれた心が、また鼓動を刻み始めるから不思議。「おふくろの味」をシェアすることで人々を幸せにしているペギーさんは、にこばかりでなく多くのモントリオーラーにとって、「おふくろ」的存在なのでしょう。

ペギーさんの優しい笑顔と懐の温かさにすっかり癒されて辿る家路。悲喜こもごもの２０１０年をぼんやり振り返りながら、ペギー・リー作の「Bella Notte」を口ずさんでいます。美しい夜、そして美しい「おふくろ」に乾杯・・・。

eng My Montréal MumNew Year’s Day was drawing close and I was starting to feel homesick for my mum’s Noppeijiru* stew. So, I went to see Aunt Peggy, as I always do whenever I feel like this. There is no one more suitable than her to be the last “Nice Guy / Lady from Montréal” of 2010.

The real name of Aunt Peggy is Ms. Peggy Reagan. She is the owner of a tea shop/bakery called Gryphon in Montréal, where you can enjoy traditional Celtic scones and shortbreads. If you step into this shop in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, you will be overwhelmed by the mouth-watering smell of butter that fills the room. Scones and shortbreads are originally from the area covered by today’s Scotland and Ireland, where recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. It was her mother who taught Peggy how to bake, and her good simple scones and shortbreads are still made in the same way today. When I visited her shop, she poured me a cup of her own blend of tea called Celtic Comfort, saying with a wink that it was perfect

with the small scones at tea time. It lived up to its name. As it run down my throat, I relaxed instantly, feeling a sense of comfort slowly spread throughout my body and mind. This little tea shop was opened fifteen year ago, and I was surprised to learn that they had been exporting to Japan since 2008. Peggy told me with a bright smile that her maple shortbread using maple syrup from Quebec was already quite popular in Japan.

It was very strange that my homesickness was already disappearing while I sat there sipping tea and nibbling scones. Now I think that there must be a lot of people who are comforted by her “mum’s baking,” and she is a mum to all Montréalers and not just to me.

Comforted by her smile and generosity, I was feeling so much better on my way home, and was quietly singing Bella Notte by Peggy Lee to myself, appreciating the beautiful evening and feeling grateful for our beautiful “mum.”

* Noppeijiru: Traditional Japanese vegetable stew flavoured with soy sauce and salt, served primarily during festive seasons.

Le nouvel an approchait et je commençais à avoir le mal du pays, m’ennuyant du ragoût de Noppeijiru* de ma mère. Donc, je suis allée voir tante Peggy, ce que je fais toujours lorsque je me sens comme ça. Il n’y a personne de mieux placé qu’elle pour être le dernier « Nice Guy / Lady from Montréal » de 2010.

Le nom réel de tante Peggy est Mademoiselle Peggy Reagan. Elle est la propriétaire d’un salon de thé et boulangerie nommé Gryphon à Montréal, où l’on peut déguster des scones celtes traditionnels et des gâteaux secs. Si vous entrez dans cette boutique située dans Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, vous serez envahis par l’odeur alléchante du beurre qui remplit la salle. Les scones et gâteaux sec (ou : gâteaux de Savoie) sont originalement de la région qui englobe maintenant l’Ecosse et l’Irlande, où les recettes ont été passées de génération en génération. C’est la mère de Peggy qui lui a montré à faire de la pâtisserie, et ses scones et gâteaux secs, bons et simples, sont encore faits de la même façon aujourd’hui. Lorsque j’ai visité sa boutique, elle m’a donné un thé de son propre mélange appelé le Celtic Comfort, me disant avec un clin d’œil qu’il accompagne parfaitement les petits scones. Le thé fit honneur à son nom. En le buvant, je relaxai instantanément, ayant un sentiment de confort qui voyageait à travers mon corps et mon esprit. Ce petit salon de thé a ouvert il y a 15 ans, et j’ai été surprise d’apprendre qu’il exportait ses produits au Japon depuis 2008. Peggy me dit, avec un grand sourire, que ses gâteaux secs faits avec du sirop d’érable du Québec étaient déjà bien populaires au Japon.

C’était très bizarre que mon mal du pays disparaisse aussi rapidement alors que je buvais du thé et grignotais des scones. Maintenant, je crois qu’il doit y avoir beaucoup de gens réconfortés par la « cuisine de maman » de Peggy. Elle est dans ce sens une mère pour tous les montréalais et non pas juste pour moi.

Réconfortée par son sourire et sa générosité, je me sentais beaucoup mieux en retournant à la maison. Je me chantais tranquillement Bella Notte de Peggy Lee, en appréciant la belle soirée et tout en étant reconnaissante envers notre belle « mère ».

*Noppeijiru : Un ragoût de légumes japonais traditionnel, aromatisé de sauce soya et sel, servi surtout durant les temps des Fêtes.

The time had come to leave Japan – and Hiro – for good. Although my small Japanese town was decked in greens and reds and boughs of holly, all I could think of was my impending blue Christmas. I knew that Santa wouldn’t be able to give me the number one wish on my list this year.

Yes, I had convinced myself, months earlier, that leaving the love of my life was the right thing to do. But now that it was almost time catch a plane out of the country, I realized that my heart still hadn’t caught up with my mind.

Since first heading overseas back in 2003, this was the third (and last) time I’d be leaving Japan for a home which no longer felt all that homey. I was now an expert when it came to the symptoms of reverse culture shock, and I wasn’t looking forward to landing on Canadian soil, only to feel like an alien among family and friends. The first two times I went “home,” I didn’t last half a year before I had booked a flight back to Asia. I couldn’t help but wonder if this time would actually be any different. Was I ready to say sayonara? Was Hiro?

As the dreaded December date neared, Hiro remained silent as he observed the apartment we shared together slowly empty of the belongings that had made our house a home. The evening before my departure, his face went as pale as the barren walls when he arrived home to an apartment decorated only by scattered boxes. Although reality seemed to have finally hit, Hiro expertly shrugged off any emotions, and suggested we go to our favourite Italian restaurant for a romantic dinner together. I agreed, and we headed out for one last night of make-believe.

After an evening of delicious denial, we lay in bed and tried to digest the reality of what was to come the next day. Neither of us slept very well, but still, the morning came too quickly…

December 22

As I packed the last of my things, I couldn’t help but notice Hiro suddenly slump on to the couch as though spent of all energy. I looked over at that unreadable face I adored, and with eyes full of panic, he returned my gaze. Seeing his pain finally revealed, I gestured for him to come over to where I was standing. Without a word, he walked over to me and drew me close. Holding each other in the middle of my now empty kitchen, I noted how unlike him it was to hug me for so long. Suddenly, I felt something wet and warm on my neck and I could hear the sound of someone crying. Was it me or could it be him? I squeezed him tighter. Perhaps it was both of us.

Yes, it would be a blue Christmas… without him.

Le temps est venu de quitter le Japon ; et Hiro par le fait même, pour de bon. Bien que ma petite ville japonaise soit ornée de verts et de rouges ainsi que de feuilles de houx, Noël me semble toutefois déprimant. Je savais bien que le Père Noël ne pourrait réaliser mon souhait le plus cher sur ma liste cette année.

Depuis quelques mois, je m'étais convaincu que laisser l'amour de ma vie était la chose à faire. Mais maintenant, alors que je dois embarquer dans l’avion qui m’amènera loin du Japon, je réalise que mon coeur ne suivra pas mon esprit.

Depuis mon premier passage en 2003, c'était la troisième (et dernière) fois que je quitterais le Japon pour ma terre natale qui n’a plus la même familiarité d’auparavant. Malgré que j'étais maintenant une experte pour vivre les chocs culturels, je n’avais pas vraiment hâte de débarquer sur le sol canadien, me sentant un peu comme un extraterrestre avec ma famille et mes amis. Les deux premières fois que je suis rentrée, je n’ai pas tenue plus de six mois avant de réserver un autre vol pour l'Asie. Je me demande si cette fois-ci sera réellement différente. Suis-je vraiment prête à dire sayonara à Hiro ?

Alors que la date redoutée s'approchait, Hiro restait silencieux pendant qu'il observait notre appartement se vider lentement de mes affaires. La soirée avant mon départ, son visage était aussi pâle que les murs stériles de notre appartement, décoré seulement de boîtes. Alors que la réalité ait finalement frappé Hiro, lui qui était expert à cacher ses émotions, il me suggéra d’aller à notre restaurant italien préféré pour un souper romantique. Étant d’accord, nous sommes sortis pour une dernière nuit d’illusions.

Alors que j’emballais mes dernières choses, j’ai remarqué Hiro s'effondrer soudainement sur le divan, comme s’il avait dépensé toute son énergie. J'ai regardé ce visage que j’adorais, et avec des yeux pleins de panique, il me fixa du regard. Voyant sa douleur finalement émergée, je lui ai fait signe de venir me rejoindre. En silence, il a marché vers moi et m'a serré dans ses bras. Se tenant au milieu de ma cuisine maintenant vide, nous nous sommes étreint très longuement. Soudainement, j’ai senti quelque chose d’humide glisser sur mon cou. J’entendis alors le bruit de quelqu'un pleurer. Était-ce moi, ou bien lui? Je l'ai serré plus fort. En fait, je crois que c’était nous deux. Oui, ce sera un Noël mélancolique… sans lui.

とうとうその時がやって来ました。日本を—そして ヒロの元も本当に離れる時が来たのです。私がいた小さな街は赤と緑とヒイラギに飾られていましたが、私には差し迫るブルークリスマスの事しか考えられませんでした。今年、サンタは私が一番欲しい物を与える事はできないのは分かっていました。

そう、数か月前、最愛の人の元を去るのが、正しい選択だと自分に言い聞かせたのです。しかし、その国から出発する飛行機の時間が近付いている中、私は、心が頭に追いついていない事に気付いていました。

2003年に初めて海外に出てから、日本を出発しもはや帰るとは感じにくい国に帰るのは、これが３度目（そして最後）でした。逆カルチャーショックに関しては十分過ぎる経験があ

り、カナダの大地を踏み、家族や友人の中で異邦人の様な気分になるのは目に見えていました。過去２回「帰った」とき、半年も持ち堪えられずに、アジアへ舞い戻って来たのです。今回は何か違うのか、考えていました。私はサヨナラを言う準備はできているの？ヒロは？

恐れていた12月某日が近付くにつれヒロは、私達の「家」を 「家庭」にしていた二人のアパートから少しずつ物が減って

行くのを黙って観察していました。出発前夜、段ボール箱もわずかとなったのアパートに帰って来たヒロの顔色は、その殺風景な壁の様に青白くなりました。やっと現実に目を開かされたヒロでしたが、彼はいとも簡単に感情を払いのけ、私達お気にいりのイタリアンレストランにロマンティックなディナーを楽しみに行こう、と提案しました。わたしは賛成し、二人で最後の幻想の夜へ出かけて行きました。

美味しい現実逃避の後、布団の中で、翌日やって来る現実を消化しようと試みました。二人ともよく眠れず、それでも、朝の訪れは早過ぎるものでした・・・。

12月22日

最後の荷物をまとめている時、ヒロが力が抜けた様にソファーに座りこみました。私の大好きな、ぼんやりした顔を眺めると、狼狽した目をこちらに向けて来ました。最後に痛みをあらわにした彼に、私は自分が佇むところに来る様手招きをしました。無言のまま彼は近付き私を胸に抱き寄せました。空っぽになった私のキッチンの真ん中で、こんなに長く抱きしめるのは彼らしくないと気付きました。その時、首筋に暖かく濡れた感触を覚え、誰かが泣いている声が聞こえて来ました。それは私だったのでしょうか、それとも彼？私は更に強く彼を抱き締めました。泣いていたのは、二人だったのかもしれません。

そう、彼のいないブルークリスマスになるでしょう。

fraLe très récent mais déjà très populaire Brit &

Chips (433 Rue Mcgill) a pour ambition d'offrir à ses clients le vrai, l'authentique Fish & Chips anglais… et même un peu plus si l'envie vous en prend. Ce restaurant fréquenté par une clientèle diverse, offre, en dehors de la traditionnelle morue, de l'aiglefin, du saumon, du merlu et un poisson du mois. Chacun est propose seul (9,50$) ou accompagné de frites (11$), mais qu'est-ce qu'un Fish sans Chips? Le tenant des lieux nous ayant proposé de goûter à ses spécialités, nous avons essayé l'aiglefin et le saumon.

Le SaumonDès le premier coup de fourchette, nous savions que le Brit & Chips tiendrait sa promesse. La panure, croustillante sans être grasse, et la chaire juteuse du poisson nous permettaient d'imaginer le goût du Fish & Chips sans en avoir avalé une seule bouchée. La grande réussite et la spécialité du Brit & Chips en effet d'accompagner chaque poisson de sa panure. Celle du Fish & Chips au saumon est ainsi faite à la Guinness, et la combinaison des saveurs est tout à fait délicieuse.

L'Aiglefin (notre préféré)Grande réussite que ce Fish & Chips à l'aiglefin. Outre la qualité même du poisson, c'est encore une fois la panure qui nous a surpris et séduit. L'association de l'aiglefin à une panure faite avec du sirop d'érable s'est révélée particulièrement délicieuse, alors même

que certains d'entre nous ne comptent pas parmi les amoureux de la cuisine au sirop d'érable. Très bonne surprise et à essayer absolument.

À noter, on peut accompagner le Fish & Chips, comme le propriétaire Paul nous l'a recommandé, d'un à-côté (side dish 1$). Par exemple, les haricots verts du Québec en purée. Et c'est effectivement à essayer!

サーモン最初のフォークのひとさしで、その美味しさは一目瞭然。外は軽くてさくさく、中味はジューシーなピンクのサーモン。このフィッシュ＆チップの美味しさの秘密は、魚の種類によって選びぬかれる衣とその魚との相性にあります。ギネスビール入りの衣をまとい、カラッと揚げられたサーモンは『ほんとにおいしい』その一言に尽きます。

コダラのフィッシュ＆チップは別格です。良質の魚

と衣のハーモニーが私を驚かせ、魅了させます。その衣の秘密はメープルシロップ。ほのかな甘さが美味しさを引きたて、メープルシロップが苦手という方にも本当におすすめです。この驚きを一度お試しあれ！

Haddock (our favourite)The haddock here is a winner! Aside from the quality of the fish, it is the batter which surprised and fascinated us once again. The haddock is coated in a batter which is prepared with maple syrup. Even those who don’t particularly love maple syrup will have to admit this ingredient emphasizes the great taste of the fish. You will be pleasantly surprised! Please do try it.

Please remember that you can also order a side dish ($1) with your fish & chips, as recommended by Paul. For example, the Quebec green beans purée is definitely worth a try!

Ça a toujours fait partie de moi je crois. J'ai continué à dessiner ainsi jusqu'à l'école secondaire. J'ai dû trouver un métier qui rejoindrait un minimum ma passion, car l'illustration au Québec est un domaine très difficile à percer et j'étais plutôt paresseux. Je me suis trompé royalement. Il n'y a pas beaucoup d'employeurs qui se risquent avec des débutants.

J'ai tout de même continué à m'entraîner car certains aspects m'ont paru plus fascinant que je le croyais au départ. J'ai fini par apprendre à être un travailleur organisé et stable, tout en essayant d'augmenter mes compétences par moi-même. Ça fait maintenant plusieurs années de ça, et je suis présentement dans le domaine de l'affichage grand format, lettrage de véhicule, image de marque, emballage, etc. J'aime beaucoup avoir un horaire bien rempli, voire surchargé. Ça évite de me plonger dans l'ennui, chose que je déteste par dessus tout. Comme je suis varié, je reste rarement dans une routine bien longtemps. Le secteur des jeux vidéo me semble très intéressant, mais depuis quelques années, le domaine a pris une sérieuse expansion et il est de plus en plus difficile d'y arriver par soi-même. Courage!

Quand avez-vous commencé à vous intéresser au graphisme/choisir de devenir graphiste?Mon premier emploi consistait à faire des cartes d'affaires à peu de frais, et beaucoup (trop) de formatage de texte. Mon premier contrat à mon compte fut de créer des personnages pour une histoire pour enfants. Ça concernait une famille dans un parc d'amusement.

La meilleure chose à propos d’être graphiste est...?Le sourire et la fierté de mes clients lorsqu'ils ont leur projets finalisé. Quand je vois mes travaux un peu partout en ville, comme des enseignes de commerces ou des lettrages de véhicule. Savoir que mon travail est apprécié à ce point est un des meilleurs sentiments !

Parlez nous un peu du design de la carte postale pour Coco Montréal?J’ai voulu mélanger le manga Japonais et mon propre style. J’ai commencé par la mine (mon kit habituel, 4H, HB et 2B). Ensuite les couleurs sont peintes à l'ordinateur avec Photoshop et ma fidèle amie, ma tablette graphique Wacom Intuos 3. C'est donc un mixe de dessin traditionnel et digital. Mon idée était de faire un personnage à la fois mignon et mélancolique. Je suis quelqu'un de très mélancolique, et c'était mes sentiments au moment de cette création. J'ai choisi une palette de couleur duotone car ça donnait un cran de plus au sentiment recherché. Un peu comme les vieilles photos de nos ancêtres. J'ai finalisé avec un peu de design pour la texture du fond et l'ajout des logos Coco Montréal. Voilà !

Biography It's always been a part of me I guess. So I kept on drawing my things all the way to the end of high school. But, I still did a graphic design course (DEP) because I felt that my illustrations wouldn't give me an easy job. Illustration in Quebec isn't an easy way, but it’s much easier to find a job in graphic design. Boy I was wrong. Not a lot of employers want to risk hiring a newcomer without much experience. Still, I trained my lazy bones and continued this way because it was more interesting than I first imagined. Then I learned to be a steady worker and tried to improve my skills. Since a couples of years ago, I’ve been working in sign media, car lettering, branding, business packaging, etc… I really enjoy having an overloaded beat of work. I hate having a routine or doing the same thing over and over again. The video game industry might be interesting, but it has changed a lot from a couple of years ago, and now it has become something big and very hard to attain on your own.

When did you first get into design/become a graphic designer?My first real job was to make cheap business cards and text formatting. My first freelance job, I think it was to create some characters for a kids story about an amusement park.

The best thing about being a graphic designer is…?The smile and pride of my customers when they leave with their project finished. Seeing my work around the town, like business signs or car lettering gives me a great feeling. Knowing my hard work is appreciated this much is the best !

Please talk a little bit about the design of the post card for Coco Montreal?I wanted to mix a Japanese manga style with my own. I started it with pencils (my usual 4H, HB and 2B series) Then the colors are painted digitally with Photoshop and my good old pal Wacom Intuos 3 (a graphic tablet)So its a mix of traditional and digital medias. The idea behind it was to create a cute character with a melancholic tone. I'm a big melancholic guy, so it was my feelings at the moment. jpn 自己紹介 描くことはいつも自分の一部であったように思う。高校卒業までずっと自分のモノを描きつづけていたんだ。でも、僕のイラストレーションでは簡単に仕事が見つからないと思ったからグラフィックデザインコース（DEP）も取った。ケベックでイラストレーションで仕事を見つけることは容易なことではないけど、グラフィックデザインなら見つかりやすいと思ってたんだ。でも、なんと、それは間違いだった。経験のあまりない新人をあえて雇用する雇用主はそう多くはいない。それでも、最初に想像したよりももっと面白いことが分かったから、自分の怠慢な体を訓練してこの道に進んだんだ。そして、堅実な労働者となって技術を磨く方法を見つけた。ここ数年、サインメディア、カーレタリング、ブランディング、ビジネスパッケージングなどの 方面で仕事をしているが、多い目のビートで入ってくる仕事が本当に楽しい。同じ事を何度も何度も繰り返す仕事は苦手だから。ビデオゲーム界は面白いに違いないが、この数年かなり変化してしまった。加えて、かなり大きくなってしまったので自分の力だけで成し遂げることは困難だ。

ココモントリオールの絵はがきデザインについて教えてください。日本の漫画を取り入れたかったので、鉛筆

（通常4H、HB、2Bシリーズ）で始めました。色はフォトショップ、そして長年使っているワコムIntuos 3 （グラフィックテーブル）を使用してのデジタル塗り。だから、伝統的なメディアとデジタルを混合したもの。背景のアイディアは、憂うつな色合いで可愛いキャラクターを創りたかった。僕自身が憂うつな性格だから、その時の感情そのものだった。探していた感じ、祖先の古い写真のような感じを加えるためにデュオトーン・カラーパレットを選び、背景テクスチャにグラフィックデザインを加えて、ココモントリオールのロゴに合体させ、それで出来上がり！

主に水彩絵の具を使用して優しい絵を目指して描いています。他にウェルカムボードや誕生日用にと依頼される似顔絵、ココ☆モンにイラストレーターとして参加することにより声をかけて頂いたモントリオール市立植物園日本庭園日本館内でのイベント用の紙芝居イラストを描くといった活動の他、経験と勉強を兼ねて千葉の村上こども油絵教室のアシスタントをさせてもらい、その講師である池田浩先生のはからいにより、現在、武蔵境こども絵画教室の講師を務めるなどの活動をしています。教室では特に水彩やパステルなど道具を限定せずに使ってもらい、自由に・自分なりに考えて描けるようになって欲しいと思いながら、子供たちと接しています。視野と出来ることを広げるためAdobe illustratorを利用して、パンフレットの表紙や挿絵を描くということもしています。

いつデザイン界に入ってグラフィックデザイナーになりましたか？

イラストレーターに興味を持ったのは26才のときです。小さい頃から絵を描くことが好きだったのですが、途中、演劇や音楽にも興味を持ち、絵をお休みしていました。26才になる頃、ふと、「25才も過ぎたし、これから30代40代に向けて何が一番やりたいことなのか」と考える時間があり、自分と会話した結果、もう一度絵を描きたいと気付き、活動を始めました。初めて関わったのは、小さなBarでのグループ展でした。

グラフィックデザイナーになって最も良いと思うことは？

自分の絵を見た人に「元気が出る」「癒された」などコメントを頂くことが多く、少しは誰かの気持ちにプラスになるものを渡すことが出来たように思えたときや、文字だけのときよりも内容を伝えやすくなる等、イラスト自体が役に立ったときに喜びを感じられるところが良いと思っています。

ココモントリオールの絵はがきデザインについて教えてください。

最近着物を着る人が増えている日本の流れを描きたいと思い、水彩絵の具を使用して作りました。

I mostly use watercolors and try to create gentle paintings. I also create welcome boards, caricatures for birthdays. After participating as one of the illustrators at Coco Montreal I was asked to illustrate for a picture story show for an event at Japanese garden in Montreal Botanical Garden. For my learning experience I worked as an assistant under an instructor, Hiroshi Ikeda, at the Murakami oil painting school for children in Chiba prefecture. Thanks to Mr. Murakami, I currently teach at the Musashisakai painting school for children. In the classroom there is no limitation on materials to use, and I hope the kids can freely think and make their own creations. To expand my view and ability I also draw illustrations for covers of brochures using Adobe Illustrator.

When did you first get into design/become a graphic designer?

First I got interested in illustration when I was 26 years old. I loved painting since small but I sort of took a break from painting while I got more interested in theatre and music. When I was about to become 26 suddenly thought, "Now 25 years of my life has passed and what do I really want to do in my future, in my 30s and 40s?". After conversing with myself I finally realized that I wanted to paint again. My first involvement was a group exhibit at a small bar.

The best thing about being a graphic designer is…?

People often give me comments like they were "uplifted" or "healed" after viewing my paintings,

that makes me feel I was able to give them something positive. Also by adding my illustrations to written works it makes it easier to understand them more than without them - I feel good when my illustrations are useful.

Please talk a little bit about the design of the post card for Coco Montreal.

I wanted to paint the current Japanese movement of people in Japan increasingly wearing Kimono. I used watercolors to paint it.

J'emploie la plupart du temps des aquarelles pour créer mes peintures. Je crée également les panneaux de bienvenue ainsi que des caricatures pour les anniversaires. Après avoir participé en tant qu’illustratrice pour Cocos Montréal, j'ai été engagée pour illustrer une histoire en image pour un événement au jardin japonais du Jardin Botanique de Montréal. Pour mon cheminement scolaire, j'ai travaillé en tant qu’assistante pour un instructeur, Hiroshi Ikeda, à l'école de peinture à l'huile de Murakami dans la préfecture de Chiba. Merci à M. Murakami, car j'enseigne maintenant à l'école de peinture pour enfants de Musashisakai. Dans la salle de classe, il n'y a aucune limitation sur les matières à utiliser et j'espère que les enfants peuvent penser librement et faire leurs propres créations. Pour augmenter ma visibilité, je dessine également des illustrations pour des couvertures de magazine en utilisant le logiciel Illustrator d'Adobe.

J’aime peindre depuis ma tendre enfance, mais j’ai en quelque sorte pris une pause de la peinture pour me consacrer davantage au théâtre et la musique. Alors que j’approchais de mes 26 ans, j’ai soudainement pensé : “Maintenant que j’ai complété 25 ans de ma vie, qu’est-ce que que je veux vraiment faire plus tard?". Après introspection, je me suis finalement rendue compte que je voulais peindre à nouveau. Mon premier projet fut une exposition de groupe dans un bar.

La meilleure chose à propos d’être graphiste est...?

Les gens me donnent souvent des commentaires comme quoi ils ont été “renversés” ou “éblouis” par mes peintures, cela me donne l’impression que je peux leur donner quelque chose de positif. Également en ajoutant mes illustrations à des textes, ceux-ci aident à la compréhension - je me sens bien quand mes illustrations sont utiles.

Parlez nous un peu du design de la carte postale pour Coco Montréal?

J’ai voulu dépeindre le courant actuel au Japon ou on remarque de plus en plus le port du kimono par les Japonais. J’ai utilisé l’aquarelle pour les peindre.

Sometimes we may have trouble using the following words correctly: hear vs. listen, think of vs. think about, etc. Check the following examples below in order to increase your vocabulary and as a consequence, communicate more accurately in English:

日本語では、ひとつの言葉ですむことも英語では、その使い道によって言葉を使い分けなくてはいけません。いくつかの例をあげてみました。簡単ですが、意外に間違えやすいかもしれませんね。

a. Hear vs. Listen: （聞こえる/聞く）We use hear to talk about sounds that come to our ears, without us necessarily trying to listen to them attentively. For example, 'I heard people talking in the living room.' On the other hand we use listen when we pay attention to the sounds. For example: I listened to the news on the radio.

これは日本語でも違いがありますね。自然に耳に入ってくる音は「聞こえる」といいます。自分の意思で耳に入る音は「聞く」といいますね。

b. Think of vs. think about: （～のことを考える）We use think of to express that we imagine something as in this example: I’m thinking of a wonderful vacation in Jamaica right now. However, we use think about when we consider an idea seriously as in this example: “I’m thinking about quitting my job.” We can use both to talk about people, though: “I’m thinking of/about my boyfriend right now.”

へ～。知らなかった！なんて方もいるのでは。

なんとなく考えるときはthink of、真剣または計画的に考えているときはthink about なんですね。ネイティブの人たちは、自然に使い分けてるんでしょうかね。すごい。

c. Say/tell/speak: 言う/伝える、話すWe use say when we mention the actual words someone uttered. For example: she said: “I love you.” When we use tell, we need to use a pronoun as in this example: She told me her sad story. Finally, we use

speak to refer to the ability to speak. For example: She speaks 3 languages. Also, we use this verb when we have a formal or serious talk with somebody: “I spoke to him about his frequent absences at work.”

“Say”と“speak”ですが、日本語では「言う」“Say”と「話す」“speak”といった感じでしょうか。

一人で「言う」“Say”ことは出来ますが、「話す」“speak”は通常、第2者（相手）が必要ですね。また、「話す」“speak”は相手側も会話に参加している状態です。

一方で　“tell” は、日本語では「伝える/言う」という感じだと思います。

「伝える/言う」“tell”は、第2者（相手）が必要ですが、話し手が一方的に

「伝える/言う」という感じが強いです。「情報」が一方的に話し手から聞き手に伝わるという状態です。相手側が会話に参加

しているとは限りません。（聞いてはいますが。）

日本語を教えている方もこれを知っておくと「言う」と「話す」の違いを説明しやすいと思いますよ。

jpn クリスマスシーズン時が過ぎ去るのはあっという間…2010年も、とうとう最後の月となりました。今年は皆さんにとって、どんな年でしたか？

私にとっては、今年は「夢の実現」の一年でした。バーレスクダンスを多くの方に見ていただくこと、そして世界一周することという、二つの夢が同時に叶う幸せな年で、旅の途中、大好きなモントリオールで、六月と九月の二回踊らせていただきました！九月にはモントリオールで、友人たちに結婚五周年を祝ってもらうという嬉しい出来事もあり、ますますモントリオールが思い出深い街となりました。

さて、愛するモントリオールは、今頃クリスマス・シーズンまっただ中ではないでしょうか？降りしきる雪と街の賑わい、是非一度体験してみたいものです。

こちら浅草はと言えば、なんとクリスマス・シーズンが無いのです！浅草のランドマーク「浅草寺」を中心とした、神社仏閣に囲まれる浅草には、クリスマスの飾り付けもイルミネーションもなく、12月中旬の「羽子板市・納めの観音」が終わるや否や、街は一度開店休業モードに…。

この街に賑わいが復活するのは、12月31日、真夜中のカウントダウン。「初詣」が始まる瞬間、新しい一年が始まる瞬間に、浅草の命は復活するのです。数万人の人々が、列を成して押し寄せる風景は圧巻。いつもより窮屈だけれど、浅草はこうでなくっちゃ！

初詣では、新しい一年にむけての希望を祈る習わしです。さあ皆様、新しい一年に何を願いましょうか？2010年に感謝しつつ、よい一年が皆様に訪れますように！

Time has flown by so fast that now we’re into the final month of the year 2010. How has this year been for you?

For me, this year was a dream come true. In fact, two of my dreams—performing burlesque dance for many audiences and travelling around the world—came true this year, which made me so happy. During my world tour, I was fortunate to perform twice in my favourite city, Montreal, in June and September. I had a pleasant surprise when my friends in Montreal joined me to celebrate my five-year wedding anniversary, which made Montreal even more memorable.

I imagine that by now my dear Montreal is in the middle of the Christmas season. I love to experience the hustle and bustle of the snowy city.

Here in Asakusa, we don’t have a Christmas season at all. Surrounded by shrines and temples, Asakusa is centred around its most famous landmark, the Senso-ji Temple, and here you won’t see either Christmas decorations or lights! As soon as the Hagoita-Ichi* and Osameno Kannon** are over, in the middle of December, Asakusa gets quiet, with fewer shoppers around. As the countdown nears on December 31st, the city gets crowded with people again. The moment the new year and the hatsumode (the first visit to a shrine in the new year) begin, Asakusa is revived. Tens of thousands of people pouring in is a sight to see. It’s a lot more cramped than a regular day, but that’s how Asakusa should be! It’s tradition during the hatsumode to make wishes and express great hopes for the new year. So, thanking 2010 for all the happiness it’s brought me, I wish you all a great year in 2011.

* Battledore Fair (the Hagoita-Ichi) is a lively fair full of Edo sentiment, which takes place December 17, 18, and 19 at Senso-ji Temple. About fifty open-air stalls sell hagoita, or battledores (which are a bit like ping-pong rackets), shuttlecocks, kites, and New Year’s decorations.

**The 18th of every month is a day believed to have a special significance to the Japanese deity Kannon. Especially on December 18th, or Osame no Kannon, the temple gets packed with worshippers.

Le temps file si rapidement que nous sommes déjà au dernier mois de l’année 2010. Comment a été cette année pour vous ?

Pour moi, cette année a été un rêve devenu réalité. Donner des spectacles de danse burlesque pour beaucoup de spectateurs et voyager autour du monde, deux de mes rêves, sont devenus réalité cette année. Cela m’a rendue très heureuse. Durant ma tournée mondiale, j’ai eu la chance de danser deux fois dans ma ville préférée, Montréal, en juin et en septembre. J’ai eu une belle surprise lorsque mes amis de Montréal m’ont rejoint pour célébrer mon 5e anniversaire de mariage. Mon séjour à Montréal est alors devenu encore plus mémorable.

J’imagine qu’à ce moment-ci mon cher Montréal est en plein milieu de la saison de Noël. J’adore ressentir l’effervescence de la ville enneigée. Ici à Asakusa, nous n’avons pas du tout de saison de Noël. Entourée de sanctuaires et de temples, Asakusa tourne autour de son point de repère, le temple « Senso-ji ». Ici vous ne verrez aucune décoration ni lumières de Noël. Aussitôt que le « Hagoita-Ichi »* et le « Osameno Kannon »** finissent à la mi-décembre, Asakusa devient calme et peu fréquentée des acheteurs. Lorsqu’on s’approche du 31 décembre, la ville redevient animée par la foule. À partir du moment où la nouvelle année et le « hatsumode » (la première visite d’un sanctuaire de la nouvelle année) débutent, Asakusa reprend vie. L’arrivée en masse des dizaines de milliers de personnes dans la ville est tout un spectacle. Elle devient beaucoup plus bondée qu’en temps normal, mais c’est comme ça qu’Asakusa devrait être ! Pendant hatsumode, c’est une tradition de souhaiter de grands vœux pour la nouvelle année. Alors, en remerciant l’année 2010 pour tout le bonheur qu’elle m’a offert, je vous souhaite à tous une excellente année 2011.

* « Battledore Fair » (Hagoita-Ichi) est une foire où il règne une atmosphère de style Edo, qui a lieu les 17, 18 et 19 décembre au temple Senso-ji. Il y a environ 50 kiosques en plein air qui vendent des hagoita (des raquettes à l’allure de celles de ping-pong) et des volants, ainsi que des cerfs-volants et des décorations du Nouvel An.

** Le 18 de chaque mois est une journée qui, on croit, a une relation spéciale avec la divinité qui s’appele Kannon. Cela est surtout vrai pour le 18 décembre, le jour du « Osame no Kannon ». Cette journée-là, le temple est rempli de pèlerins.
