MALE FEMALE
GERMAN• Most common cockroach species• Can breed in great numbers• An indoor species preferring dark
shelters near food and moisture• Strongly resembles the Asian cockroach,
an exterior pest of the southeastern U.S• Carries disease organisms and can cause
allergic reactions in people
BROWNBANDED• Named for the yellowish brown bands
running across its forewing• Prefers starchy foods and requires less
water than other cockroaches• Can be found in all parts of a facility
and prefers hiding places up off the floor
BROWN• Lives in hot, humid conditions and
is common in southern states, from Florida to Texas
• Sometimes found further north when transported by people moving from the south
• Common hiding places include crawl spaces, sewers, garbage areas, food storage areas, ground cover and palm trees
• Capable of flight; feeds on plant material
AMERICAN• Largest cockroach species• Considered a perimeter pest, but occasionally enters structures. • Prefers warm, damp locations and can
be found by the thousands in sewers, steam tunnels and boiler rooms
• Can fly, and thus migrate between buildings
• Referred to as palmetto bugs in Florida and other parts of the south, and can survive outdoors well
AUSTRALIAN• Prefers hot, humid conditions such as
those found in greenhouses and parts of commercial buildings like restaurants and areas with tropical plant decor
• Feeds primarily on plant materials• Rarely infests homes
SMOKYBROWN• Commonly found in the south• Usually found outdoors, often around
ground-cover ivy and vines, loose mulch and woodpiles
• Enters buildings through cracks and crevices and will infest any warm, humid areas not exposed to air currents
• Will feed on anything of nutritious value
SURINAM• Tropical insect usually found in hot, humid
areas such as Florida and Texas• Species is all female, and can produce
eggs without the help of males• Often burrows into soil and goes unnoticed
because it is active at night• Feeds on plants, such as potted plants
in malls, zoos and greenhouses, and can cause severe damage
ORIENTAL• Common indoor pest that prefers
damp, secluded places such as crawl spaces, basements and drains
• Typically enters through door thresholds, utility pipes, vents and floor drains
• Cannot climb smooth surfaces, and thus is often found trapped in bathtubs and sinks
• Thrives outdoors, even in freezing weather
• Feeds on filth and produces foul odors
