A Message from the Headteacher
I am pleased to report that the autumn term has started very well. Students have settled back into school routines in a positive and enthusiastic manner, and this attitude is an important factor in the success of our school. While exam results are important, particularly for those moving on to the next stage of their education, our students embrace every available opportunity, including ones that have no qualification at the end of them. I was delighted to see large numbers from all year groups participating in extra-curricular activities from the very first week back at school in September. Among other activities, students are engaged in sporting fixtures, choir, rehearsing for the next school show, as well as creating and preparing props for the production. I am proud that our school is successful in supporting our students to be all they can be and I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

This years Celebration of
Achievement event took place
on Thursday 6 September at
Hundith Hill Hotel. The event
formally acknowledges the
outstanding achievements of our
students and highlights the
amazing contributions they
make within our local
community. Our guest speaker
for the evening was former
student Richard Moyes. Richard
was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize in 2017 for his work with
the International Campaign to
Abolish Nuclear Weapons
(ICAN). He provided our guests
with an insight into the work he
does developing treaties of
international law and reflected
on his time here at Cockermouth
School. Fifteen awards were
kindly sponsored by local
businesses and presented to
students from throughout the
school covering all subject
areas, alongside Community
Engagement, School
Ambassador and Headteacher
awards. Guests were
entertained with background
music provided by our Summer
Singers, and a beautiful piano
performance by Y13 student
Jasmine Dean. Congratulations
to all award winners.
We are delighted at the performances of all of our students at both A Level and GCSE. The hard work and dedication of students and staff has been rewarded with some exceptional results. For the third year running, Y13 students delivered significantly improved results in their A Level exams. An incredible 27 students gained all A* and A grades and these grades cover the full range of subjects we offer at Cockermouth School. The progress made at A Level places us in the top 10% of schools nationally for the second consecutive year. We also saw some outstanding student performances at GCSE with 15 students achieving eight or more grades 8 or 9. Nearly a third of all grades awarded in the new GCSEs were a grade 7,
8, or 9 (equivalent to an A or A* in the old system). We also recognise the incredible achievements of the huge number of students who exceeded their target grades. These results now place us in the top 25% of schools nationally for progress at GCSE.
Celebration of Achievement Evening
Our World of Work morning is rapidly approaching. On Thursday 8
November our Y11 students will take part in a range of workshops that
aim to improve their understanding of the world of work, the employability
skills needed & the range of jobs that are available locally. We are
currently looking for volunteers to help support this event. As a local
business/parent, can you help? If you are able to spare a few hours,
please contact [email protected] to register your interest and
find out further details.

This year’s Young Geographer of the Year competition, run by the Royal Geographical Society, gives students the opportunity to explore the geography of the Arctic - in doing so, they discover what makes this polar environment so unique. The Arctic is an environment like no other. It is home to four million people, supports an abundance of uniquely adapted wildlife and plays an important role in moderating the world’s climate system. However, the Arctic is a dynamic environment that is undergoing change. Congratulations to Y10 students Isabella Bridgman (1st) William Devenish (2nd) and runners up; Pippa Francis, Helena Segar, Evie Jonsson, Eloise Cole and Lucy Davies who’s work, following the school’s own semi-finals, will be entered into the national competition. Good luck.
