EASTER BINGO 2015On Wednesday 22nd April our PTA organised a fantastic Easter Bingo night. Lots of people were there from school and all around in the community. If you got a line you got an Easter egg, and for a house you got a box of chicken and veg. Zoe Billingsly won first prize in the raffle. It was a box of food and a toy rabbit which looked amazing! Altogether the event raised £1200 for school funds, so well done everyone who helped and took part.

Fenton Football FunOn16th May Fenton School came to Coastlands to play us at football. There were mixed teams of boys and girls, so everyone had a chance to play. We all played really well. In the first game we drew 1-1 and then we lost again 1-0. After that we lost 1-0 again but we were never going to give up though. Hopefully we’ll win next time. Sam Beegan, Nathan and Rhys played in goal. Thanks to all our families who came along to support us.

Wicked Welsh WorkshopsLast month Year 4 and 5 had a visit from Dafydd Vaughan from Menter Iaith, an organisation which helps to promote the Welsh language. We played family fortunes in Welsh. It was great fun and we hope he will come back again. Diolch yn fawr, Dafydd!

Superb school council visit!!!On 22nd May, the School Council had a visit from two ladies from the Education Department. They wanted to find out how much input the pupils themselves have into school life and the decisions that are made. They talked with Mrs Davies, Mr Evans and our link governor Mrs Mecklenburgh. After that they watched our meeting and in the end were impressed. They were especially pleased with the way that Chairperson Elin Gent ran the meeting and at how the younger children were supported by the older ones. Afterwards they talked to us and asked us some questions. Vice Chairperson, Luke Jenkins says `I enjoyed having the two ladies from the Education Department watch us; their questions were interesting and I liked answering them.’ The School Council hope more visitors will come and we hope improve our councillor skills.

Wonderful WastebustersOn 19th May we had our latest Wastebusters Collection. A man came to collect all of our unwanted clothing to send the useable items to charities around Eastern Europe and the unsuitable clothing to be shredded. Altogether we collected around 120 bags and the children from Class 3 who brought in bags got to help load the bags into the van. Well done to everyone who brought in a bag. We have saved around 400kg of materials from going into landfill! Ernie Earth should be proud!

Garden Centre TripRecently Class One had an interesting visit to the garden centre in St. Ishmaels. They found out about lots of different plants and especially enjoyed smelling the herbs. They saw beautiful roses and fruit trees. They had a lovely time.

Coastlands Scoops another Eco-Award!Last month we had some really exciting news: our school has been recognised by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the top three schools in Britain for our environmental work! We are the only school in Wales in the top three and stand a real chance of winning the WWF Green Ambassador Award. The prize for first place is £5000 and 2nd place and 3rd place get 2500 each (and we’ve definitely won one of those prizes!)! In July, eight of our most eco-minded pupils will be going to Surrey for some environmental activities, where the winning school will finally be revealed. Fingers crossed! An enormous thank you goes to Kate Lock who has worked so hard with us to get us to such a high standard. Urdd Adventure for Class 3On April 27th-29th, a group of us from Year 5 and 6 visited the Urdd Centre at Cardiff for a residential course packed with fun activities. We visited Big Pit on the way and following that we did activities like ice-skating, cinema trip, Techniquest and the Dr. Who Experience. We even went to an all you can eat buffet, where the staff called Fanta ‘Fenta’ (which was strange!). We stuffed our faces, although some of us weren’t very adventurous about trying new foods... We had a fantastic time, even though we didn’t get much sleep! One of our favourite activities was ice-skating which was really tricky for some of us until we got the hang of it. There was lots of falling over and pupil Rhys Warlow says, “I have a numb bottom still!”Thanks to everyone who helped us raise funds towards the trip and to the PTA for their contribution. Well done to Kayleigh, Zoe, Ella and Elin who raised loads of money selling their jewellery.

Girls’ Cricket FestivalOn 21st May the girls from Class 3 went to Haverfordwest to a cricket tournament. This was quite tricky for us because we haven’t played cricket much before, but we were fast learners. Emily Gray scored two sixes and eight fours, while Zoe Eagle had lots of fours. Thanks to Miss Thomas and Mrs Scale who came along with us.

VE Day CelebrationOn Wednesday 20th May we celebrated VE day. We all dressed up as evacuees, land girls, soldiers, a world war 2 engineer and even one pupil from Class One came dressed as a pilot in a bomber plane.We all went out on to the school field to have photographs taken in our classes.In the afternoon we had our street party in our school dinner hall. We were supposed to have it outside, but it was too windy. Everyone brought in party food and we ate it while listening to ww2 music.After the hall had been cleaned we had an assembly where Mr Evans judged the costumes. The winners were Alfie Witts (Class 1), Maddie Beal (Class 2) and Emilia Nowakowska (Class 3). The winners all won a box of miniature heroes. YUM! YUM! Well done to everyone who made the effort to dress up. There are photos on display in the Class 2 & 3 corridor.

MATHS MADNESS WITH TECHNIQUESTLast month people from Techniquest visited to do maths workshops with each class. In Class 3 we had to solve a crime using mathematical clues: our suspects were Susie sharp, Johnny Jewels, Freddie light fingers, Tina terror, and Miss Pinchit! We finally found out it was Johnny Jewels who was the culprit.

Congratulations to Sam Burton who has passed his Grade 3 clarinet exam with a high merit. Also to Zoe Eagle, whose piece of Welsh writing gained third place in the Urdd Eisteddfod.
