QuiltFest: Sue Hart reported that 2 1-yard coordinated cuts of fabric are being collected for the pillowcase project at QuiltFest. She reported the Preview night theme will be Dresden Plate quilts, and she advised that QuiltFest will no longer be accepting quilts rolled longer than 36”, and they should be on a soft roll, like a pool noodle. She also reported the Guild in charge of this year’s show will only be ordering 100 bags and next year’s Guild in charge, the All Stars, have already designed a clever bag for the 2018 theme “Quilters Rule.” Coastal Quilters will be in charge of the 2019 show so members are asked to start thinking! The next QuiltFest Board meeting is Tuesday March 21 at the Morocco Shrine Center.

Ocala Retreat: Cathy Smith reported Retreat registration is now closed. She gave details about the retreat, which will be held in Silver Springs. She said there would be activities so participants should bring fat quar-ters and spools of thread, as well as a gift bag containing a quilting no-tion, to participate. She reported that Janet Sebastian sent information on a Bargello class for those interested. Michelle Lemmers shared infor-mation on a pincushion project she is planning and provided a sign-up sheet and materials list. Kits are $8 and there will only be enough for those signed up.

Hometown Retreat: Dianne Anderson reported the Hometown Retreat is May 19, 20, 21 and will be $50 for the three days. There will be assign up for helpers to share in chores at the April meeting. Sign up for the retreat began at the meeting and money is due by May 9. There are no cancellations (with refunds) after May 10.

Hi everyone!

This RV Adventure is fun. As I write this we are in a RV Park in Belle Chase, LA. Yesterday we explored the French Quarter. Today we are recovering from lots of walking and catching up on laundry etc. My main project on this trip is an appliqué taken from the quilt magazine Simply Modern. I love this magazine. I had picked up Issue 8 just before leaving. One of the

projects uses strips or strings as the background for reverse appliqué by Trana Heredia. She has also pub-lished Simply Strings. A great idea book for our June workshop Crazy Over Strips and Strings.

I have found that strips multiply. The stash of strips we used to make the Guild's Opportunity Quilt is as large or larger than when we began. So, our job is to use them up! You won't need any fabric for the work-shop except a piece of white muslin about 18" x 18" to experiment with reverse appliqué.

The following are quilt books that use strips and strings in many different ways.

Trana Heredia, Simply Strings

Amanda Jean Nyberg and Cheryl Arkison, Sunday Morning Quilts and No Scrap Left Behind

Virginia Baker and Barbara Sander, String Quilt Re-vival

Over the next months look up these authors online to gather ideas. Several years ago Patty Thomas did a class on string quilts and Carole Jackson and Dianne Anderson have also made several. Carole's Quilt "Bouillabaisse" is a gem. I forget who designed that pattern. As you look at strip quilts, you will see that they range from very random to highly organized, so there is something for everyone.

Strip quilts are frequently made on a foundation. Look up SHEER DELIGHT. It is a sheer mesh stabilizer perfect for strip piecing as it does not need to be re-moved. Best of all Nancy's Notions carries it.

Have a great time quilting.

Handwork With Friends

There is a group which meets at the Senior Center on Tuesday morn-ings. It is called Handwork with Friends.

This group is made up of women who enjoy doing handwork. That is anything that can be put into a bag or basket….knitting, crochet work, embroidery, hand sewing (bindings) and even hemming and mending.

It is wonderful to see what everyone is working on and fun to “show off” a finished project. What is even better, there is always someone to help you understand a part of the directions that seem to be written in a foreign language. Come join us and have an enjoyable morning.
