I. INVITE

1. Work gloves for volunteers (bring a pair of gloves with you.

2. Water to keep properly hydrated.3. First-aid kit for minor cuts and scrapes4. Trash bags or have a reusable containers.5. Sign-in sheet to record the number of

participants and enable to contact later with thanks and photos.

II. GET SUPPLIES

1. Review what to do in case of health emergency (heat exhaustion, etc.) and find out any of volunteers have medical training or know basic first aid.

2. Beware of man-made safety hazards such as rocky areas, highly variable tides, etc.

3. Dress accordingly, wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.

4. Plan ahead for handling sharp items including syringes or pieces of broken glass. We recommend disposing of these items in a container with tight screw lid.

1. EMPHASIZE IMPORTANCE OF DATA COLLECTION. THIS COLLECTION IS USED TO CREATE A SNAPSHOT OF THE GLOBAL OCEAN TRASH PROBLEM AND INFLUENCE LONG-TERM SOLUTION.

2. ASK VOLUNTEERS TO TICK MARKS TO RECORD DEBRIS ITEMS USEFUL FOR DATA ANALYSIS.

3. SUGGEST TO WORK IN SMALL TEAMS WITH EACH TEAM FOCUSED ON ONE DATA CARD.

4. INSTRUCT VOLUNTEERS ON WHAT TO DO IF THEY ENCOUNTER ANY HAZARDOUS ITEMS, SUCH AS SHARP OBJECTS OR DEAD, ENTANGLED OR INJURED ANIMALS. 5. REMIND THEM OF ANY LOCAL SAFETY HAZARDS SUCH AS POWER LINES OR POISON IVY.6. ESTABLISH POINT-PERSON TO STAY AT THE CHECK-IN STATION IN CASE OF HEALTH EMERGENCIES OR ANY LATE ARRIVALS7. TELL VOLUNTEERS WHAT TO DO WITH THE FILLED BAGS OF TRASH, AND SET A MEETING TIME FOR THE END OF THE CLEANUPS SO THAT EVERYONE RETURNS AT THE SAME TIME.

1. Take before and after photos of the cleanup site as well as shots of volunteers in action and final group picture with all of the trash collected.

2. If you have a scale with a hook, use it to weigh the trash collected. If you don’t have a scale, you can use a standard version of 15 pounds per trash bag to estimate the overall weight of collected trash.

3. As the volunteers finish, collect all completed data forms.

4. Ensure all trash is left in the designated drop-off location that no materials are left behind as you leave the cleanup location.

1. Return all data forms to Ocean Conservancy after ensuring that you have included the cleanup location and total number of participants as well as the final amount of trash collected.

Survey cleanup team post-event.Encourage everyone to share experiences, stories and pictures about what they saw. This might encourage others to attend future events - and now is the time start planning. Get volunteers on board while their enthusiasm is high!

Send out an email saying, “Look what we did!” Include how many friends, family and community members joined in, and how many pounds of trash were collected.

Collect lessons learned and best practices for future activities.
