Co-operative Education

a program which alternates periods of academic study with periods of work experience in appropriate fields … in accordance with the following criteria:

i. each work situation is developed and/or

approved by the co-operative educational

institution as a suitable learning situation;

ii. the co-operative student is engaged in

productive work rather than merely observing;

iii. the co-operative student receives

remuneration for the work performed;

iv. the co-operative student's progress on the job

is monitored by the co-operative educational

institution;

v. the co-operative student's performance on the

job is supervised and evaluated by the

student's co-operative employer;

vi. the time spent in periods of work experience

must be at least thirty per cent of the time

spent in academic study

The Faculty of Engineering Cooperative

Education Program is :

• An education model rather than a job placement strategy

• A three-way partnership between the student, the educational institution, and the employer

• An opportunity for a student to gain an enriched understanding of their academic program through practical work experience

• An advantage over non-co-op programs where students are more likely to gain employment sooner after graduation, have higher salaries, and are more likely to find employment related to their degree (CAFCE / CEWIL - Canada)

Tips for Success

1. Be Proactive: Using the co-op resources (MyMUNLife and ASMs-

CE) and your network of contacts to find a job. ASMs-CE assist

and guide students in developing their careers.

2. Be Flexible: Willingness to work in various locations and

industries to discover where your interests lie.

3. Be Open: Being open to different ideas, approaches, and

opportunities (e.g. changes to cover letters and resumes, learning

about a new company/industry outside your current area of

interest).

4. Be Diligent: Ensuring that job applications are well written, and

preparing thoroughly for interviews. Ensuring all documentation is

submitted on time.

Success…

5. Communicate: Speaking to office staff and ASMs-CE during

your job search in order to seek assistance. Speaking with ASMs-

CE regarding any issues/questions you have while at work.

6. Persevere: Working at developing your career by researching

companies, building your network, and applying for jobs. Never

give up!
