DECISIONS HAVE TO BE MADE
The newly reformed
Common Fisheries Policy
places data and knowledge
at the heart of decision making
But
“Science has to be policy packaged”

• Utilise new tools and technologies for novel data
• Develop and extend ecosystem models and assessment methods
• Develop practical Decision Support Framework (DSF) that can highlight
alternatives and consequences
• adapted to the needs of decision makers, managers, operators, and
other stakeholders
• support the implementation of the new Common Fisheries Policy
(CFP), Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and Habitats
Directive (HD)
• Integration, co-creation and training of stakeholders
OBJECTIVES – THE WHAT
![Page 5: CO-CREATING ECOSYSTEM BASED FISHERIES MANAGEMENT … · • Develop and extend ecosystem models and assessment methods • Develop practical Decision Support Framework (DSF) that](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042306/5ed1d9d1248c480daf0a161c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

The MareFrame focus will:
• Enhance the capacity to provide holistic assessment on
important issues
• Provide advice and decision support for an ecosystem
based approach to fisheries management
• Look at feasibility for implementation
MareFrame will allow for:
• Collaboration across multiple scientific fields
• Collaboration between different ecosystems
involved in catching of fish
• Co-creation approach which merges analytical and participatory
processes in collaborative research with stakeholders
STRATEGY – THE HOW
![Page 6: CO-CREATING ECOSYSTEM BASED FISHERIES MANAGEMENT … · • Develop and extend ecosystem models and assessment methods • Develop practical Decision Support Framework (DSF) that](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022042306/5ed1d9d1248c480daf0a161c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

• COMPARISON
• For the first time, the performance of a broad spectrum of ecosystem
based models will be developed, tested and compared systematically
on the same ecosystem, and evaluated using the same underlying
dataset
• Knowledge gained on the prediction of the models
• CO-CREATION
• The new predictive monitoring system will be based on
responsiveness, flexibility, stakeholders´ involvement and developed
and demonstrated through training actions, role-play and workshops
with stakeholders

More on Impact and Dissemination
The Decision Support Framework is already feeding into system
development in other H2020 projects:
PrimeFish
ClimeFish
The Seafood Sim training tool will enhance the understanding of
trade-offs and use of models among policymakers and industry
Is developed by a commercial training provider
In addition to online educational material about EAFM
Active in relevant conferences (especially ICES)
A number of pier reviewed publications

Lessons learnt
Co-creation with stakeholders is very useful
Input about NEED and NICE to have
The perfect is often the enemy of the good
Models are as good as the data they are fed with
Lack of good socio-economic data in models
The collaboration with different models in different European cases
is unique
Challenging and inspirational
Twinning and International Training Network (SAF21)
Need to apply the work in practices
Pilot projects with EAFM used with decision support tools
