It took years for 8t. Vincent's Hospital to achieve theexcellent reputation that it enjoyed at the time of itsuntimely closure. Its gerontology section headed by Dr.Monte Peterson was unparalleled in the City. TheEmergency Room which was connected to the full servicehospital saved untold lives, one a young woman who hadbeen hit and dragged by a Sanitation Truck. She and mymother recuperated together in their excellent Acute CareRehabilitation floor. She most probably would not havesurvived had she been brought to a stand alone facility. Itis unconscionable that our elected officials have allowedthis to happen

St. Vincent's has been a vital ingredient in the city'shealthcare network for generations, serving one of thecity's most vibrant, diverse neighborhoods. It's loss lowersthe overall quality of life and reduces the city's ability torespond to trauma. I recall the essential role that St.Vincent's played during the height of the AIDS crisis aswell as on 9/11. Although I'm no longer a resident of NYC,I care deeply about the city and its people.

St. Vincent's went from being a good solid neighborhoodhospital and class 1 trauma center to a dreadfulmismanaged facility. I hope it can be revived as a place ofgood medicine and good care.My Mother lives in Manhattan and has Alzheimers andrequires ER services periodicaly and the trip to Beth Israelis taxing on her.I had two major surgeries at St. Vincents. They havetreated other family members. When I was a patient theservice was excellent I had very good doctors who all leftdue to the shut down. My children live in the neighborhoodand there are no hospitals that service that area. Mygrandchildren have no hospital that services that area.Right now they are being transported for miles just to get toa good hospital. This is not right.
