ERODE AUG 30: It is a surprise for every one to hear

that an NGO was maintaining over 900 cattle for charitable purpose by spending over Rs 2.5 cr every year to maintain them with engaging 40 workers. The local Modakurichi BJP MLA Dr CK Saraswathi attended special poojas held in connection with the gaushala's 17th anniversary on Sunday.

The NGO-Gau Seva Sangam, started with 14 cows left by ryots in 2014, is now functioning with over 900 cattle including 56 milch animals, 362 cows, 300-400 calves in 11 acres of own land at Savadipalayam, nearly 15 km from Erode on Karur Road.

The rest are bulls. The calves were being given to farmers at less price and they have also been allowed to leave their aged bulls or cows here.

''The NGO buys 15 tons of green fodder daily from many ryots at a price of Rs 45000 to cater to the needs of animals,'' said NGO president Ramrathan Kothari.

Says the NGO PRO Subash Jagoo ''from the cow dung and urin, medicines, agar bakthi, tooth powder, gober powder vermi compost, cow ark (medicine for human being), pheneol, face pack soaps, panchakavya etc are being produced and sent all over the state for sales.

Besides, milk is sold in many houses in Erode. As all the animals are indigenous breed and they are given fodder grown through organic method, people like the products much.

Out of such sales and donations of public especially over 1000 members of the NGO, the cattle are maintained,'' he added. The government provides free

medicines to the cattle. But the NGO engages veterinarians to look after them.

The supervisor of the gaushala Lalchandh Daga observes ''our message is that the indigenous animals like Kangayam bulls which are on the verge of extinction should be protected. Those who are not able to maintain them can leave them here''. People visit the gaushala on Sundays and Full Moon days to do poojas to cows.

The ground water in the area has over 1000 TDS ppm per litre. ''During the rainy season, the area is fl ooded. Besides, no separate drinking water provision is made for the gaushala. So, we want some help from the government on such issues,'' the members said.

A group of Visva-Bharati university students continued their sit-in outside the offi cial residence of Vice- Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty for the third day on Sunday in protest against the expulsion of three students around a week ago.

The three, expelled by the central university for alleged disorderly conduct during a protest against the VC on the campus on January 9 this year, issued an open letter to the public seeking their support on the issue.

"We have been subjected to revengeful and vindictive behaviour by the VC who expelled us for three years and brought doom to our career. We are like your sons and daughters. Please be on our side till the last moment of the fi ght," read the letter addressed to "every right-thinking person".

Other protestors who were in the demonstration that started on late Friday evening claimed they had been agitating in the interest of students and to protect Rabindranath Tagore's Visva-Bharti from "ruin".

At least 40 people are sitting in groups near Chakraborty's residence, holding posters that read "We want the withdrawal of three-year expulsion order against our friends" and "Fascist VC, please leave Visva Bharati".

The VC could not be contacted.

Some of the ashramites and members of a local traders' body, which had protested against the university's decision to erect fencing around the famous Poush Mela ground last year, visited the demonstration site in the past two days to pledge solidarity, spokesperson of the SFI unit in Visva-Bharati,

Somnath Sow said.Sow, one of the expelled

students, said, "We earned the wrath of the university when we spoke against the suspension of over 10 professors on the charge of airing individual opinions over the state-of-affairs at the university under the incumbent VC. We are facing the heat for holding protests against CAA-NRC and entry of right wingers from outside."

The three, two of whom are students of the economics department and one of the music department, were put under suspension in January. They were rusticated for three years on August 23.

A Visva Bharati offi cial said the students were given chance to defend their case before the enquiry commissioner appointed by the university, but they were "adamant and unapologetic".

The Opposition Congress on Sunday demanded a special session of the Assam Assembly to discuss the purported threat posed by the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP) and rising crimes against women in the state.

Addressing a press conference here, Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia said that completion of the LSHEP, the biggest hydroelectric project to have been undertaken in the country so far, will spell disaster for Assam, especially for the three districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, and Majuli.

These three districts are on the verge of destruction due to the government's mistake, the senior Congress leader claimed.

The project, being developed by the state-run National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC), is on the Subansiri River, which is

on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The construction of the project started in 2005 and was due to be completed in 2010.

However, it was delayed due to resistance over its potential environmental impact.

The projected time of completion of the 2,000 MW LSHEP is March 2023, as per the offi cial website of NHPC.

Pointing out that 75 per cent of the work of the project has been completed without heeding the protests of people, Saikia said, the Congress is not against big dams but wants safety measures and efforts addressing environmental issues.

Saikia mentioned that the previous BJP-led state government under Sarbananda Sonowal had signed an MoU with the NHPC in 2019 without implementing recommendations of an expert committee that was formed in 2010 to study possible destruction by the big dam.

The Nagaland government has decided to develop smart, safe and sustainable urban centres and communities with high-quality basic services, according to a vision document of the state administration.Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio recently unveiled the Nagaland SDG Vision 2030 - Leaving no one behind . It provides short, medium and long term strategies to achieve 17 sustainable development goals (SDG), including sustainable cities and communities. The vision document said that the

process of urbanisation has failed to take place evenly throughout the state as urban growth has been concentrated mostly in the key towns of Kohima and Dimapur.

The urban settlers are faced with the problems of fi nding employment and livelihood opportunities. The towns and cities of the state face signifi cant long-term challenges such as abnormal demographic change, climate change, lack of basic amenities including shortage of housing and lack of economic activities such as industries. The issue of urban poverty is emerging as another complex

phenomenon due to lack of access to basic services, employment and housing, it said.

Availability of land for development activity is the biggest challenge, the document said adding that in most cases, projects are delayed leading to escalation of cost while in many instances works are delayed due to litigation related to land.So far master plans and development plans could not be implemented due to land issues, the document said.It also stated that urban governance in Nagaland is a relatively recent phenomenon.

China clamps new rules to regulate foreign ships in its watersBEIJING, AUG 30 (PTI)

In a bid to regulate foreign ships, China on Sunday notifi ed new maritime rules warranting vessels carrying radioactive materials, bulk oil, chemicals and a host of other supplies to report the details of the cargos upon their entry into Chinese waters.

The new rules are expected to increase tensions if China strictly enforces them in the disputed South China Sea and the Taiwan straits where the US and its allies have been conducting naval expeditions, challenging Beijing's claims to assert the freedom of navigation.

Beijing claims almost all of the 1.3 million square-mile South China Sea as its sovereign territory. China has been building military bases on artifi cial islands in the region also claimed by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

According to a notice from China's maritime safety authorities issued over the weekend, operators of submersibles, nuclear vessels, ships carrying radioactive materials and ships carrying bulk oil, chemicals, liquefi ed

gas and other toxic and harmful substances are required to report their detailed information upon their visits to Chinese territorial waters.

In addition to these types of vessels, vessels that may endanger the maritime traffi c safety of China prescribed by laws should also follow the new regulation which will take effect from September 1, the state-run Global Times quoted the notice from Maritime Safety Administration.

Those vessels should report the name, call sign, current position and next port of call and estimated time of arrival. The name of shipborne dangerous goods and cargo deadweight are also required in the report,

the report said. Chinese experts told the Global Times they view the rollout of such maritime regulations as a sign of stepped-up efforts to safeguard China's national security at sea by implementing strict rules to boost maritime identifi cation capability.

The reference to submersible reportedly refers to spy devices unmanned spy devices found by the Chinese fi shermen in China's coastline.

Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, said the new announcement showcases China's determination to regulate the foreign vessels' right of use within the country's territorial waters, which should be based on

proper identifi cation.Tensions between China

and the US over Taiwan and the South China Sea coupled with growing discord between the two countries over the origin of coronavirus, Tibet, Xinjiang and Hong Kong have remained high after Joe Biden took over as the President of America in January this year.

On Friday, the Chinese Defence Ministry termed as provocative the crossing of two US naval ships through the Taiwan Strait, in what the US Pacifi c Fleet described as a routine operation. This was the eighth time the US naval ships passed through the channel after Biden became the president.

The frequent provocative moves [the passage of American vessels] are of a very bad nature and show the US is the biggest destroyer of peace and stability and the biggest maker of security risks across the Taiwan Strait , Chinese defence ministry spokesman Tan Kefei said.

The US Navy and Air Force also conducted such missions in the disputed South China Sea to assert freedom of navigation challenging China's claims of sovereignty over the area.

US evacuates about 2,000 people from Kabul in the last 24 hoursWASHINGTON, AUG 30 (PTI)

The US has safely evacuated more than 5,500 American nationals from Afghanistan including about 50 people in the last day and there are nearly 250 Americans who are trying to leave the war-torn country, the State Department said on Sunday.

Chaos has enveloped Kabul after Afghanistan's government collapsed and the Taliban seized control on August 14.

The Taliban insurgents stormed across the country, capturing all major cities in a matter of days, two weeks before the US was set to complete its troop withdrawal after a costly two-decade war. Nearly 5,500 American

citizens and likely more have been safely evacuated from Afghanistan since August 14. This includes an additional roughly 50 individuals in the last day, a State Department spokesperson said.

The offi cial said there remain up to approximately 250 Americans in Afghanistan who are trying to leave the country. Our team on the ground continues to coordinate assistance around the clock for this group, while taking the current security situation into

account. Some may already be at HKIA or in the process of being guided there, and all have information on how to reach us, the offi cial said.

Additionally, we have been in regular contact with a group of roughly 280 individuals who have self-identifi ed as Americans in Afghanistan but who remain undecided about whether to leave the country or who have told us they do not intend to depart, said the spokesperson.

Ex-UK Marine leaves Kabul with dogs, cats but no local staffLONDON, AUG 30

A former UK Royal Marine who waged a high-profi le campaign to leave Afghanistan with almost 200 rescued dogs and cats has fl own to safety with the animals, but without his charity's Afghan staff, who were left behind in Kabul.

A privately funded chartered plane carrying Paul Pen Farthing and his animals landed at London's Heathrow Airport on Sunday after a saga that gripped and divided Britain, raising diffi cult questions about the relative value placed on human and

animal lives.Iain McGill, a veterinarian

involved in the effort, said the animals appeared healthy and had been placed in quarantine.

Farthing, who started the Nowzad charity after serving with British forces in Afghanistan 15 years ago, was eligible for evacuation in Britain's military airlift along with Afghan members of his staff and their dependents. But he refused to leave without the animals. For days, Farthing used social media and press interviews to chronicle his attempts to

depart with his four-legged companions amid the chaotic exodus from Kabul airport, as his supporters lobbied the British government for help with a rescue effort dubbed Operation Ark.

Farthing gained backing from celebrities including comedian Ricky Gervais, and many offers to adopt the rescued animals. But he also drew criticism from those who said the case was draining time and energy from the task of rescuing Afghans at risk from the country's new Taliban rulers.

Britain says it evacuated

more than 15,000 UK citizens and vulnerable Afghans in a two-week airlift that ended Saturday.

But offi cials say as many as 1,100 Afghans who were entitled to come to the UK have been left behind. Some British lawmakers who have been trying to help stranded constituents and their families believe the true total is higher.

What would you say if I sent an ambulance to save my dog rather than to save your mother? said Conservative lawmaker Tom Tugendhat, who served with the British Army in Afghanistan.

Taliban: US airstrike hits suicide bomber targeting airportKABUL, AUG 30

The Taliban said that a US airstrike targeted a suicide bomber in a vehicle Sunday who wanted to attack the Kabul international airport amid the American military's evacuation there. There were few initial details about the incident, as well as a rocket that struck a neighbourhood just northwest of the airport, killing a child. The two strikes initially appeared to be separate incidents, though information on both remained scarce. The attack comes as the United States winds down a historic airlift that saw tens of thousands evacuated

from Kabul's international airport, the scene of much of the chaos that engulfed the Afghan capital since the Taliban took over two weeks ago. After an Islamic State affi liate's suicide attack that killed over 180 people, the Taliban increased its security around the airfi eld as Britain ended its evacuation fl ights Saturday. US military

cargo planes continued their runs into the airport Sunday, ahead of a Tuesday deadline earlier set by President Joe Biden to withdraw all troops from America's longest war. However, Afghans remaining behind in the country worry about the Taliban reverting to their earlier oppressive rule something fueled by the recent shooting death of a folk singer in the country by the insurgents. Zabihullah Mujahid said in a message to journalists that the strike targeted the bomber as he drove a vehicle loaded with explosives. Mujahid offered few other details.

Stuart Binny announces retirement from first class and International cricketNEW DELHI, AUG 30 (PTI)

India all-rounder Stuart Binny, who owns the record of the best bowling fi gures in ODI format, on Monday announced his retirement from fi rst class and international cricket.

The 37-year-old Binny began his career with his state Karnataka and represented India in six Tests, 14 ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals.

"I would like to inform you that I have decided to retire from fi rst class and international cricket," Binny, whose father Roger also represented India, said in a statement. "It has given me

tremendous joy and pride to have represented my country at the highest international level."

While he did not get many international runs under his belt, Binny returned exceptional bowling fi gures

against Bangladesh when he took six wickets for just four runs in an ODI in June 2014 in Dhaka.

It remains the best bowling performance in the ODIs till date. He had bettered the record of his compatriot

Anil Kumble, who had also taken a six-wicket haul against the West Indies in 1993 but had conceded 12 runs.

A handy all-rounder, with experience of 95 fi rst class matches, iconic skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni tried him out in a few Tests with reasonable success.

In his debut Test against England in July 2014, he scored 78 in his second innings and that remained his only fi fty in his six Tests. A 31-run over in a T20 game against the West Indies in Florida effectively ended his international career where Evin Lewis hit him for fi ve sixes. He was viciously trolled. Once the

confl ict of interest became a catch phrase in Indian cricket, his father Roger was forced to relinquish his selection committee post.

With advent of Hardik Pandya as an explosive batting all rounder,

Binny's chances of national comeback dwindled and he played a season of fi rst class cricket in the North East.

He will be remembered as a player who punched above his weight and did his best as per his abilities.

Binny thanked the BCCI, his various teams, fellow players and coaches for the role played in his growth as a cricketer.

Have been training without a coach: discus throw silver-winner KathuniyaTOKYO, AUG 30 (PTI)

It's a silver worth its weight in gold for Indian discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya, who trained for the Paralympics without a coach and is quite proud to have fi nished on the podium without any tangible guidance for over one year now.

The 24-year-old, a B.Com graduate from New Delhi's Kirorimal College, sent the disc to a best distance of 44.38m in his sixth and last attempt to clinch the silver.

"That was amazing. Winning the silver has given me so much more motivation to get the gold medal at Paris 2024," he said in the mixed zone.

Kathuniya said preparing for the Games was hard for him as lockdowns ensured that facilities were closed for a major part of the last two years.

"In the last 18 months the preparations have been very tough. In India there was a six month lockdown so every stadium was closed," he said.

"When I could return to the stadium on a daily basis

I had to practice by myself. I couldn't have a coach then and I am still training without a coach. It was a great moment that I could win the silver medal without a coach," he added.

Son of an Army man, Kathuniya suffered a paralytic attack at the age of eight which left him with coordination impairments in his limbs. Shooter Avani Lekhara becomes first Indian woman to win gold at ParalympicsTOKYO, AUG 30 (PTI)

Shooter Avani Lekhara scripted history on Monday as she became the fi rst Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, fi ring her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women's 10m Air Rifl e Standing SH1 event here.

The 19-year-old from Jaipur, who sustained spinal cord injuries in a car accident in 2012, fi nished with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record.

She is only the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu (2016).

"I can't describe this feeling, I'm feeling like I'm on top of the world. It's unexplainable," an elated Lekhara said.

Hers is also the fi rst shooting medal that India has

logged in the showpiece. "I'm so happy I could be the one to contribute it. Hopefully there's a lot of medals more to come," Lekhara said.

Lekhara edged out 2016 Rio Games gold-medallist Cuiping Zhangh of China who clinched the silver medal with a total of 248.9 at the Asaka Shooting Range.

World number one and reigning world campion Iryna Shchetnik of Ukraine took home the bronze with an effort of 227.5.

"I was just saying one thing, that I have to take one shot at a time. There's nothing else matters now, just take one shot at a time and just fi nish it. "I just think that I

have to follow the process. Beyond that, I try not to think about the score or the medal tally," Lekhara said refl ecting on her fi nal.

This is Lekhara's fi rst major international medal. She had fi nished fourth in the last world championship in 2019.

Appearing in her maiden Paralympics, Lekhara, ranked fi fth in the world, consistently shot 10s in both the competition stages.

She was set to obliterate the world record but two 9.9s towards the end cost her the mark.

In the qualifi cation round, Lekhara had fi nished

seventh with a total 621.7. Encouraged by her father to get involved in a sport, Lekhara initially tried both shooting and archery.

She found she enjoyed shooting more, and was also inspired by 2008 Beijing Olympics gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra after reading his book.

She began shooting in 2015 at Jagatpura Sports Complex in Jaipur.

A student of law, Lekhara made her debut for India in 2017 World Cup in Al Ain, UAE.

The teenager's performance was lauded by Prime Minister Narendra

Modi "Phenomenal performance @AvaniLekhara! Congratulations on winning a hard-earned and well-deserved Gold, made possible due to your industrious nature and passion towards shooting.

This is truly a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes for your future endeavours," Modi tweeted.

She will also be competing in the mixed 10m Air Rifl e Prone SH1, the women's 50m Rifl e 3 Positions SH1 and the mixed 50m Rifl e Prone event.

From ordinary Kirana stores to police stations, fake journalists are at the forefront of ‘Katta Panchayts’, the kangaroo courts. Fake

journalists are also taking on new incarnations in real estate and sand smuggling. The Madras High Court has slammed the fake journalists in the recent idol smuggling case. It has also recommended the government set up a Tamil Nadu Press Council to get rid of fake journalists.Only persons identifi ed by the Tamil Nadu Press Council will be recognised as journalists and only they can hold elections to press associations. The High Court has said that only through them can journalists be offered free bus passes and accommodation. Another wording of the High Court judgment is that it is not permissible to issue an identity card to newspapers that do not print 10,000 copies daily. A throng of reporters rushes to get a free bus pass across districts for a newspaper that publishes just 50 copies in a remote corner of Tamil Nadu. In the name of journalists, they also work without pay under the limelight of the media. The current orders of the High Court are a blow to fake journalists. Such weeding is necessary to anchor the fourth pillar of Indian democracy.

COIMBATORE,AUG 30

The golden jubilee celebrations of the fi rst trimester batch of Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering 1972 - 76/77 was held at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on Sunday. As part of the event, a representational statue depicting a farmer was also erected at the TNAU premises.According to an offi cial statement from the university, in the year 1971, the then Agrl.College & Research Institute, Coimbatore, became Tamil Nadu Agricultural University(TNAU). In 1972, degree programs in Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering were introduced under a new system called the Trimester

system of education whereby each academic year had 3 Trimesters. While Agriculture and Horticulture programmes were for 4 years, Agrl. Engineering was for 5 years then. The First Trimester batch who attended the golden jubilee celebrations at TNAU on Sunday, felt that it was a golden opportunity for them as the system enters its 50th year in 2021.“It’s our pride and pleasure that multiplies when we realize that one of our batchmates is the current Vice-Chancellor of this prestigious University,” they said, while they expressed their gratitude to their Alma mater TNAU. The alumni of the 1972-76/77 batch came together and set out an objective for themselves to “Re-Live the Life that they had in

TNAU and hostel during those days”. Accordingly, a plan was drawn up to meet up on 28th and 29th August 2021 to cherish some of the memorable activities like attending the classes, labs, student’s canteen, playground, library, auditorium, botanical garden, hostel, etc. They had a Campus tour on August 28 as well.On August 29, as a token of their gesture and gratitude to their Alma mater, they donated a monument related to Agriculture and installed it in the Botanical garden that will stand the test of time. A life-size statue of a Farmer with a Plough made of brass mounted on a podium of 4 feet from the ground. The installation ceremony was inaugurated by Dr N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of TNAU.

TNAU Golden Jubilee Celebrations: Nostalgia for First Trimester Batch ERODE AUG 30:

Under the Jal Sakthi Abhiyan, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 1360 cr water project for entire Modakurichi segment, said the local BJP MLA Dr. CK Saraswathi.

Distributing house site pattas to 29 poor families at Siluvampalayam village, Sivagiri in her segment, she said that the scheme would cover all 33 panchayats in Modakurichi and Kodumudi blocks in the segment and all houses would be provided house hold connection.

In the nation only in her segment, all houses would soon get protected water by constructing new overhead tanks, water purifi ers and laying new pipelines etc.

She said that she represented to the government to announce Kodumudi as ancient pilgrimage centre with allotting fund for tourism promotion activity as it has over 1000 year old Mahudeswarar temple. Due to some land dispute, efforts were made to fi nd 14 acre land at

Kolanalli to create a turmeric research centre under the Spices Board. She also represented to the government to construct a bridge across Cauvery river at Pilikkakpalayam to link Kodumudi with Namakkal district. Similarly, she sought 4

check dams across Kuranganpallam Odai to irrigate 3500 acre in the area. Repair works, including construction of small bridges and replacement of sluizes were going on in the Kalingarayan irrigation canal in her segment, she added. She

Rs 1360 cr water project sanctioned said that the BJP MLAs were given less time alone to speak in the Assembly. They, however, appreciate the good works of DMK rule an then air their views and demands. But, the DMK is always fl aying Centre without appreciating its good schemes, she rued. She said the inquiry is going on regarding KT Raghavan issue. But, in reality, BJP is a safe party for women.
