ABOUT HAPPY VILLAGE PROJECT

Our Club has planned a multi-year project to transform Phalode, an impoverished, tribal village located near Bhimashankar. This area receives in excess of 2000 mm of rain, but in absence of water storage, the village faces acute shortage every year after January. Due to non-availability water for irrigation, only one crop is possible. This severely limits the income potential of village inhabitants. Although the area is endowed with rich natural resources, very few of these are being used for betterment of lives. Literacy levels, particularly amongst women are very low.

Our club would like to change this situation through a multi-year intervention and transform Phalode into a “Happy Village”.

We have already taken some baby steps:• An existing water tank was deepened increasing its

water storage capacity by 300%• 20 Adult literacy centres have already been set up• Four entrepreneurs have begun their entrepreneurial

journey by making & selling seasonal products from locally available bamboo (e.g. Akash Kandil)

Through our “Happy Village” Project we hope to build up on these intial successes and significantly scale up o u r e f f o r t s . R e s i d e n t s o f t h e v i l l a g e , t h e Grampanchayat & local NGOs will be our partners in this transformational journey.

We will leverage Global Rotary network such that every rupee that is generated through this fund raising program, will get multiplied 4-5 times and thus your contribution will go a long way.

Other Projects:In addition to ongoing projects of our club, following projects are also planned. These are • Upgradation of ICU at a hospital catering to low income patients.• Providing artificial limb ’Vikas Foot’.

Today

• Through water conservation, make sufficient water available for agriculture & household use. • Improve farm productivity by helping farmers adapt to modern agriculture practices. • Create employment opportunities by creating enterprises based on naturally available resources

(e.g. products from bamboo, products based on Raggi etc).• Set up 25+ additional adult literacy centres in the area to eliminate the menace of illiteracy. • Provide solar PV based lighting system for houses & small hamlets that are cut off from the grid.

ABOUT ROTARY CLUB OF PUNE METRO

Rotary Club of Pune Metro (RCPM) is a group of professionals devoted to serving the community. It is a homogeneous group of active members drawn from various backgrounds. All members of the Club are passionate about serving the underprivileged, the disadvantaged and the needy sections of society. The Club received its Charter on 28th June 1996. Thus, it has a history of twenty four years of successful, unstinted service to community. Current membership strength is over 60, out of which approximately one-third are lady Rotarians. Spouses of all Rotarians vigorously participate in and execute projects in a spirit of fun, fulfilment and pride.

The Club has executed several unique social projects over the last 24 years and has an enviable track record. The Club manages its affairs with high ethical standards. Projects are executed with meticulous planning and a high level of fiscal discipline. The projects are based on rigorous need assessment & hence create a significant impact. One year tenure of President & his/ her Board of Directors results in continuous refreshing of approach and strategy. Dedicated Project Conveners maintain continuity from concept to completion.
