month bites the dust, we are nearing the end of a busy
season but there’s still plenty happening in May too before the season officially ends and the temperatures start soaring into the 40s.
If you look through the competition results for April, you will be taken aback at exactly how many events happened that month; it really was full-on, but very enjoyable all the same.
The Club’s 25th Anniversary celebrations are now all finished, having culminated in the 25-Hole Open on 18th April which was really well organised with excellent on-course food and beverages and so many great prizes provided by sponsors Tech Access, On Course Golf, BASF, IP Global, Acuma and Zurich. It was very enjoyable, even though it was a long day with high temperatures! Congratulations to the marshals who did a great job of trying to keep everyone moving and thank you to all management and staff who worked so hard to put the various Anniversary events together.
As I am writing this, the ladies have just finished a full day of golf and lunch for Lady Captain’s Day which was very good; congratulations to Lady Vice-Captain. Barbara Head, to EGC staff members, Don and Albert, and to Marie Benson, Carrie Parker, Stephanie Wilson, Carolyn Thompson, Tracy Marks, Senga Newell, Najla Bartette, Vera Woolnough, Janet Curtis, Maura Duggan and Annette Stewart, ably assisted by Trevor Varri, for putting together the excellent ‘skit’ after lunch which was really well done.
Moshe Kohli’s Captain’s Day takes place in a few days time on 3rd May and it’s sure to be an enjoyable day. Moshe has very kindly invited the ladies to take part so this will be staged over both courses - full report and photos will follow next month.
Congratulations to this year’s Hankook Greensomes winners, Jenny Ayres and Trevor Varri, a formidable pairing who won the Club Mixed Matchplay last season and they are in the final again this year.
Thank you to Surender Kandhari of Hankook for his continuous support of this event; it’s not only a company sponsorship but also personal support by Surender and his family. Long may this event continue as it is one of the highlights of the year.

Awesome April lived up to expectations and the first tournament was the 21st running of the Indian Invitational. This was followed by the Medal, and then
the Anniversary 25-Hole Open on 18th. Barney and his team put in a lot of hard work and, with the sponsors who supported the event, it turned out to be a great day with some fabulous prizes, on course food and beverages, and a wonderful evening at the prize presentation. ‘The Quaich’, the bi-annual tournament that has been started this season against the Montgomerie Golf Club was played on 25th April. It was an absolutely lovely day out on the Majlis course followed by a superb sit-down dinner in Le Classique.
I must compliment Jayshree, Annette, Jasjeev and Nishanthi for their great efforts in selling raffle tickets at the Indian Invitational and collecting AED 15,000 for the junior staff fund — indeed the most difficult task. Past Captain Surender Kandhari deserves all the praise for once again organising a great event, and thanks to all members for their participation. Over the past 21 years approximately AED 400,000 has been collected for the junior staff fund and this has only been possible due to the generosity of the members who have bought the raffle tickets, the sponsors for the gifts, and of course the steering committee of this event.
Dr Abdulla Karam practises in the evening on the range, nearly five days a week. He is one man who has shown that hard work and perseverance pays, by winning the Monthly Medal and an improvement of five strokes to his current handicap. He is truly a role model for those aspiring to sharpen their game and of course at KHDA. He was also instrumental in continuously requesting flood lights on the members side of the Majlis driving range. So once Andrew got the lights fixed, Abdulla delivered on the game. Heartiest congratulations Doctor !!
We had a visiting Chinese delegation from a Golf Club in Beijing recently. Lady Captain Glynis and her team of 14 players took them on and won by a wide margin. Incoming Lady Vice-Captain Mitsuko won the singles event. Well done ladies of EGC. The winning streak continues. Our players in the scratch league also continue to excel, and make us all very proud.
I had the proud privilege of playing with HE the Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. Admiral DK Joshi, PVSM,AVSM,YSM,NM,VSM,ADC. The Admiral is an anti-submarine warfare specialist, and he was on a state visit to UAE. He is an avid golfer and his humility was most endearing and truly worth emulating by all of us. It was truly a most enjoyable experience for all of us who met
him that day.
The keenly contested Talker Cup was played on 27th and was won by Team Europe. I am told it was fiercely contested and and the better team on the day won. Heartiest congratulations !!
Lady Captain’s Day on 28th was a huge success. Vice-Captain Barbara and her team put on an absolutely wonderful day and entertainment at the
prize presentation. I am sure Glynis will cover more of it in her message. I am now looking forward to welcoming you all on my Captain’s day and seek your support with your participation. The entries have been great so far, and I thank you all very much.
May Mayhem is usually a time when the golf season is winding down and, though slower, mayhem continues, the essence being to catch up on as much golf as possible before the harsh summer sets in. We do have a couple of great tournaments like the Black Tee Challenge and the Tournament of Champions. We are playing the DCGYC in the Clash of the Titans, and there will be the Staff and Members Scramble later this month. That is something I am truly looking forward to. The junior staff, in spite of very little practise, play so well and it’s always a memorable afternoon.
So my advice, for the month of May, please get on the course as much as possible and if it’s hot during the day, we can always boast of Night Clubbing on the Faldo.

April certainly didn’t disappoint, and was, as expected, cram packed with one golfing fixture after another.
The April Monthly Medal gave all the ladies their last chance to earn Curtisy Cup points for our annual tournament in May, Europe v Rest of the World. The points have now been awarded, and the final team selections have been made. The top 16 point scorers (in the Order of Merit) for each team will battle it out on the Majlis course, The format will be Greensomes in the morning followed by Pairs Betterball in the afternoon and it’s sure to be a hard fought event, with Emirates Golf Club’s top lady golfers competing for the coveted Curtisy Cup. Congratulations to everyone who earned their place, and good luck to both teams, in what is always an incredible day!
In order to give some of our ladies the chance for some Curtisy Cup practise, we held a Greensomes tournament on our regular Monday morning, resulting in some fantastic scores and a lot of fun. Well done to all the winners.
Our annual stableford tournament, the Camel Trophy which is extremely popular on our golfing calendar, produced some very high scores with Maura Duggan triumphing over the field with an outstanding 41 points! Maura played a fabulous round of golf and was delighted to take the trophy. Huge congratulations to all the winners!
Onwards to the Nations Cup, another popular tournament, when we played a Pairs Betterball format for our countries. Never having won the trophy before, Scotland is now firmly on the Cup, with Barbara Head and myself winning with a very successful 52 points, beating Denmark by just one point! Well done team Scotland!
It was a real pleasure for EGC ladies to host visitors from Beijing China, to play a friendly matchplay tournament on the Majlis. EGC were the victors and we all enjoyed a fabulous evening on the terrace entertaining our guests. Thank you to all the ladies who were able to take part in an already busy month.
With the Hankook Greensomes and our Ladies’ Amateur Open in the intervening weekends, the golfing season, along with the weather, truly was heating up. Our very own Trevor Varri and Jenny Ayres, with their winning partnership, triumphed over a strong field to bring the Hankook trophy home in this very successful annual tournament - a great achievement! With some unseasonal, but extremely
welcome rain in April some of us even played golf in the rain. Our beginners took part in their own Rosebowl Trophy, a 9-hole stableford competition, which is always hard fought. This year’s winner of the Rosebowl Trophy was Leona Sandesjo with a steady 16 points. Well done!
I was certainly looking forward to my Lady Captain’s Day, and it didn’t disappoint! A 115 strong field, played a modified course in an individual format, with many surprises along the way. Having witnessed many a Captain’s Day, I knew to expect the unexpected. Being surrounded on the tee box, at very close range, my drive-in did concern me. However, I think the adrenalin must have kicked in, and a not-too-shabby drive of 205 yards gave me great relief! “Thank goodness, that was over”, I thought, but then I remembered I still had Barbara’s skit and my speech to come! I think Stephanie Wilson dressed up in a dog costume, jumping out at me before my drive-in certainly took my mind off the job in hand so thanks Steph... I knew you couldn’t resist!
From the complimentary continental breakfast at check-in, delicious sausage rolls and quiche on the course, to the wonderful lunch and party at Emirates Central, I know that all the ladies and guests had an amazing day! Thank you to all the sponsors on the day - it wouldn’t have been such a great success without you! Thank you Emirates Golf Club for all your unfaltering support throughout the year and for the beautiful gift. Special thanks to Barbara and Co. for the amazing transformation of Emirates Central into a British themed party, and the extremely funny take on my life! The ‘skit’ was so well thought out and executed by our very own ladies with cameo roles from EGC staff. MIXED COMPETITION RESULTS Thorp, Preston, Pearce and Meyer triumph in the US Masters Par 3 event
The Acuma team of Kevin Thorp, Paul Preston, Mike Pearce and Illana Meyer took first place in the US Masters Par 3 competition with an excellent score of 40 Stableford points on the
Par 3 course.
Following closely in second place with a great score of 38 Stableford points was the 7-Days team of Mark Rix, Zoe Rix, Dave Hoolickin and Steve Moran. Mark Rix also claimed the Nearest the Pin prize on hole 4.
Dubai Golf’s CEO Chris May claimed the Nearest the Pin Prize on hole 9.
All competitors then enjoyed an evening of golf as the US Masters began shortly after the end of the competition.

Paris Betterball Stableford sponsored by Nexus.
As always at Emirates Golf Club this mixed event, sponsored by Nexus for the third successive year, attracted a starting field of 108 players. Bandopadhyay followed his recent monthly medal success with a winning performance in
tandem with Arun Khehar, their 7-under par total being good enough to edge Gurmukh Ghuldu and Nishith Patel into second by a one point margin.
Connie Sayal partnered the in form Shravan Khanna to take third place overall on 41 points.
Also in the prizes were Chris Purchase and Ashish Nanda for their accuracy on the nearest the pin holes and Carolyn Thompson and Shravan Khanna for their long drives.
Talker Cup 201327th April
The Talker Cup is an annual all-day golf competition between teams of 24 players from Europe and North America, the format being better-ball matchplay. It was started in 1988 by member, Richard Chiarantona.
This year was the 27th event (there were two in 1988, in May and in December) and after a very exciting day and some superb matches Europe emerged the winners beating their rivals by 15-9. The overall results from 27 Talker Cup events stand at 15 wins for N. America to Europe’s 12. Captains this year were Drummond Welsh for Europe and Erik Koeman for N. America. Next year’s Captains were announced at the post-match dinner, Scott McPherson for Europe and Ed Hesson Jnr. for N. America.

JUNIOR SERIES
With the weather heating up and the Dubai Golf Junior Series in full swing it was time for the sixth event on
the calendar. The event took place on Thursday 18th April with two shotgun starts at 4pm and 6pm. We had a total of 46 competitors, many of whom were trying to climb the Order of Merit table while those at the top were trying to extend their points lead.
For all levels the competition was run over nine holes of the Par 3 course at Emirates Golf Club.
Black/Masters Level: 1st place went to Dhruv Nair with a fantastic level par score of 27. Well done Dhruv! In second place was Abraham Delos Reyes with 2 over score of 29 nice improvement Abraham. Purple/Gold Level: 1st place was Eshna Bhargava with a score of 31 beating 2nd place Mikhil Maajid also with 31 on a last hole countback. Very tight scoring in this category!
Blue/Silver Level: 1st place was Toby Bishop with a score of 32 beating 2nd place Tanishq Lalvani who scored 34.
Yellow/Bronze Level: 1st place was won by Hoshi Yadav with a score of 37 and 2nd place was brother, Mikhil Yadav, with a score of 39. White/Cadet Level: 1st Arghandiwal Syraat who scored 44.
Our thanks go out to all competitors and parents for coming along to support the events. It has been a fantastic series so far and the development of the players is showing with the extra practice and the levels of scoring. Well done everyone!

The Montgomerie Dubai, captained by John Brash triumphed over Moshe Kohli’s Emirates team in the inaugural ‘Quaich’ interclub match.
The Ryder Cup style event witnessed 20 members from each club battle for the pride of ‘Emirates Hills’ over the iconic
Majlis course. The winning team in each of the 10 matches claimed a point for their respective side and for those matches finishing early; the remaining holes were played for an additional half point.
Kohli and Turlik secured 1.5 points in the lead-off match against Brash and Pitman. Nick Hymas and Juan
Pujana defeated Dick Purchase and Drummond Welsh 2 & 1. The third match also went to the visitors with Alex Kuk and Cedric Fevre beating Amr Salem and Lalu Mahtani 4 & 3.
Gurinder Singh and Nishith Patel claimed a one- hole victory for the hosts over Anthony Clarke and Myung Kyu Shi. The best performance of the day came from Alex Andarakis and Stephen
Styen, claiming a 5 & 3 victory for team Montgomerie.
Peter Pavy & Sanjeev Gheewala and Anand Lakhiani & Vijay Devnani secured points for Emirates. The last three pairings for Montgomerie all clinched narrow matches including John McMenemy, John Aslett, Debbie Murray, Jo Higgins, Kerry Fitzpatrick and Jane Gray. The end result saw Montgomerie scoring 7.5 points to EGC’s 6 to grant them the title.
The event lived up to its promise of ‘a challenge of sportsmanship and true spirit’; the return fixture will be staged at the Montgomerie Dubai later this year where Emirates Golf Club will look to wrestle back the trophy from their neighbours.

It is also a good place for children to grow up as the schools are good and the climate is wonderful. We were not thinking of staying so many years but Dubai is just a perfect place for us.
What sort of work are you involved in?We have interests in the hospitality industry, resorts, seaplanes, spas and dive schools in the Maldives and in the Seychelles.
Do you have family here?We have three children. Filip 24, Tom 21 and Britt 17. Filip and Tom are working in one of the resorts in the Maldives and Britt is in boarding school in Sweden. She has one more year there before she goes to University. She was born in Sri Lanka when we were living there but the boys were born in Sweden. They had never lived in Sweden until their last couple of years of school which they spent there when it gave them the opportunity to get some experience of their home country.
I guess they are what you call third culture kids as they feel home everywhere in the world.
When did you join EGC?Maria: I joined Emirates Golf Club in the autumn of 1997. My friend Ewa and I decided to start playing golf and since she
had been in Dubai for a number of years she suggested EGC. My first golf Pro was Elliott Gray who was Head Pro at EGC at that time. It took me a few years to convince Lars to take up golf
but eventually he did and Andrew Whitelaw was his first Pro.
We are also members at a golf club in Sweden, Nynäshamns Golf Club. We have a house at Victoria Golf Club in Sri Lanka and we are
members there also.

Favourite golf course to play and why?Maria: We have been on a lot of golf holidays together around the world. We have played the Old Course at St Andrews as well as Gleneagles which I like and where we have been a few times. Once we went to the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond I played the Pro-Am with this year’s Desert Classic winner, Stephen Gallacher.
For me though, the most beautiful and challenging golf course I have played is Tralee in Ireland.
Lars: I really enjoyed our trips to Scotland and Ireland and the highlights for me were Castle Stuart, Turnberry, and Muirfield.
Most memorable moments since joining EGC?Maria: My most memorable time at EGC was my time as Lady Captain. I think our ladies’ section is the most unique in the world. We have a lot of fun playing every Monday and there are always many ladies participating, something which is difficult to find anywhere else.
Why do you enjoy being members at EGC?Maria: Emirates Golf Club is like my second home. When I am in Dubai I am at the Club almost every day and if I don’t play golf I use the gym. Lars travels a lot from time to time but when he is here he also spends a lot of time at the Club. Our children used to play golf and tennis here when they lived in Dubai and even now, when our boys visit us, they love to play golf at EGC. The staff at the Club and the atmosphere they create are what makes it special. They are always helpful and friendly with smiles on their faces.
I would like to congratulate the Club on its 25th Anniversary. I hope the future will be as good as the past. We are both looking forward to being members for many more years to come.

It’s now three months since we left sunny, warm Dubai and headed back to the UK and snow! Fortunately for us our part of
Wales escaped the worst of the bad weather and we have gradually become acclimatised - even managing to play golf in sub zero temperatures!
Here in Wales our house is on a golf course – Machynys Clwb Golff (www.machynys.com) - near Llanelli in South West Wales. We look down the 12th fairway towards the
clubhouse with the 11th green to the left of us and the 13th green to the right. (See picture) The clubhouse is a Par 4, five minute walk, away and we have magnificent views of the Loughor Estuary and the Gower Peninsular. Our move home has been helped enormously by the fact that we have fantastic neighbours who have welcomed us back with open arms. We are now
full members of the golf club and
are playing regularly, Bob
with the very active seniors’ section and Angela with the ladies. There are plenty of golfing and social events planned for the forthcoming season, both serious and otherwise!
So, we are settling in well here but we miss all our friends in Dubai, and in particular at Emirates Golf Club. However, we’ll be back to see you all quite soon and we also hope to give a very warm Welsh welcome to those of you who venture this way.

The work of Hubert Privé can be divided into two lines, the man is at the same time an artist, visual artist and designer, one always joins the other on the line of imagination, he finds his inspiration in the world of golf, a sport that he has practiced for more than twenty years. His work as an artist varies from a monumental sculpture to appropriating everyday objects and turning them into works of art that unveil a surprising angle of vision on the discipline itself and the state of the spirit of the player. His works present sculptural compositions, both imaginary and functional: an x-ray of a club inside a brain, drivers embracing a tree trunk,

In this same spirit, Hubert Privé has created a line of furniture “Tee”, an range of functional unique pieces with refined lines that lend themselves towards different uses: stools, coffee tables and bar tables. Two books have already been published, the first one in 2008, the second at the end of 2011, presenting more than 90 new models that reveal the evolution and diversification of the work of the artist: the monumental sculptures go side by side with the concepts, the design furniture and the decorative objects. This book is commented on by golfing champions and passionate personalities.

Blessed with an overflowing creativity and energy, he initiated himself in the work of communication whilst little by little becoming the blooming artist of today. Good footwork deserves more attention than it gets because it’s what puts you in the best position to deliver the club consistently for solid contact.
You should feel the weight transfer in your swing in terms of load on your feet - not just the back or front foot, but where on each foot that weight is falling. It starts with a 50-50 distribution across your two feet at address, with the weight concentrated on the balls of your feet - not the heels.
As you swing back, your weight should transfer
to roughly 65 percent on your back foot, specifically on the inside arch area. The first thing you should feel on the downswing is a slight left-hip bump to shift weight from the arch of your back foot to the base of the big toe on your front foot. This move will help you set the club on the correct inside path and prevent the common over-the-top sequencing problem many players fight.
Swinging down and through to a full finish- where 90 percent of your weight is on your front foot - will help you make solid ball-turf contact instead of striking the ground too early.

Students will learn the fundamental principles of the Pilates method including:
• Pilates breathing to increase lung capacity and effective oxygen circulation,
• Healthy pelvic mobility, • Spinal alignment and decompression (to create more space for
vertebrae and reduce pressure and tension held in certain areas)• How to use the deeper muscles of the core to initiate healthier
movements with control, precision and concentration.
These exercises are performed on the mat, often with the aid of some supporting equipment to assist, or even challenge clients more. The exercises are performed standing, seated, kneeling or lying down on back, side or front. Mat work is the foundation of all Pilates exercises and will build core strength and improve control, co-ordination and balance (both standing and seated). The class will provide a solid foundation of knowledge and a strong core in preparation for more challenging exercises to come, and will also aid in more supportive and healthy movement in your daily life.
Reformer Pilates classes are conducted on a specialised piece of equipment called the Reformer. Clients are lying, kneeling or standing on a moving carriage connected to springs which give resistance and support.

Kirsty Macpherson first discovered Pilates after suffering several years of chronic lower back pain and the practice has enhanced her entire health and well being; the only therapy that could keep her pain free.
She is trained in mat and reformer and has completed the comprehensive 12-month, 950 hour teacher training programme through The Pilates Centre, Boulder, Colorado.
She has also completed training in Dorn body alignment and is a PIDDDS level 1 practitioner.
Her extensive personal experience with back pain means she brings a unique sensitivity, combined with precision to her work, creating a safe and encouraging, yet challenging environment for clients of all ages, ability and fitness levels.
Her love of teaching and her attention to detail coupled with study of Psychology and over 10 years corporate experience allow her to adapt her approach for each client, offering skills that translate to their everyday lives.

BiomechanicsGluteal strength and stability are two of the most important factors in both achieving a great golf swing and preventing injury.
The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the body, however weakness of this and the gluteus medius muscle, tend to inhibit thoracic rotation. Other muscles try to take on the load, which results in standing up too early and losing your posture during your golf swing.
More importantly, weakness of the glutes puts excessive pressure and forces through the spine due to lack of its stabilising role. This may result in lower back
and hip pain, or lead to more serious injury.
Exercises specific to your needs are prescribed by a physiotherapist, such as this stabilizing technique
These pesky points are defined as hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle associated with palpable nodules in a taut band. When trigger points occur, they create pain patterns that interfere with muscle activation. Other muscles in the kinetic chain are recruited to take on the load, which as John explained, can restrict full range of movement.
Trigger points can be released manually from the muscles, freeing up the fibres and restoring full motion. While using rollers can help, trigger point release requires specific attention for each area.
Additionally, sports massage can reduce scar tissue from previous injuries and release fascial tightness, two factors that may also be limiting your perfect swing.

On April 4th a farewell evening was arranged for us by Annette Stewart and Fay d’Abo to celebrate our 21 years at EGC. We were joined by many friends, 28 of us altogether, to play the Par 3 and more friends came after golf for an enjoyable dinner on the Par 3 lawn. Mike
Tracey was MC that night and helped with the prize-giving and a jolly time was had by all who were there. Roger and I received generous gifts, one of which was a picture of the Club, to remind us of all the very happy times we have spent on and off the course. There is so much we shall miss, but we have very happy memories to take away with us. As we leave we wish the Club and all the members every happiness and success in the future.

Throughout the months of May and June we experience our annual transition of Ryegrass to Bermuda on the
Majlis course. This is a tough time of year as we endeavour to encourage the Bermuda, that has been lying dormant for the past five months, to return as our predominant turf species for the summer months ahead. You will notice in particular in
the rough areas, large areas of turf dying back creating bare areas throughout the course. Where the Bermuda has coped with dormancy better, recovery is seen a lot more quickly, but predominantly the team will need to ‘sprig’ most of these areas with Bermuda and grow them back in again. The entire process takes from 4 to 6 weeks to complete until we can enjoy 100% turf cover and presentation again. On the contrary, the Faldo Course thrives as the temperatures improve and the Paspalum is once again in its preferred climate for aggressive growth. The course will green up significantly and you will again start to see good definition between the fairway and the rough. The rough helps stop your ball running off into the desert areas and the course generally plays softer. Consistency in terms of putting surfaces is something we are going to be working on this year, in particular between the two courses. The Faldo greens being Paspalum, are more challenging to maintain consistently at faster green speeds. The Bermuda on the Majlis is a dwarf variety and with a shortened internode produces many fine leaves which assist with a tighter sword and better ball roll in general resulting in increased speed. This year, we will benchmark the greens to a reading on the Stimp, share this with the membership to ensure
that no matter which course you are playing you will be putting on greens that although not the same species, will be more consistent in speed. Luiz Bertuol combined superb golf with stamina to triumph in the first ever staging of a 25-hole Open at Emirates
Golf Club. To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the club 132 competitors took on the challenge of the famous Majlis course and seven holes of the Faldo back nine. The course, measuring a total yardage of 9436 and par 100, was a stiff examination on a warm and humid afternoon. But it was Luiz Bertuol who carded the best score of 56 points, 6-under par.
Zoff Khan also enjoyed the challenge carding 55 points to clinch runners-up place with Vijay Devnani in 3rd on 54 points. Rahul Yadav
picked up 4th place with a 53-point tally.
The ladies’ section was also keenly contested with Lisa Cadiz carding 49 points to take top prize from Catherine Loos by a one point margin.
Ray Downes produced a superb score of 55 points dropping only a handful of shots during 6 hours of golf to clinch the
best gross score
of the day. Co-sponsor Titleist
made sure all prize-winners for the individual stableford were well rewarded for their efforts.
Tech Access as well as sponsoring ten holes offered prizes for the best scores over the ‘Tech Access Nine’ (holes 1 to 9 on the Majlis course). Zoff Khan clinched top prize on 22 points with Luiz Bertuol in second on the
same mark, just missing out by card count back. In the ladies’ section Catherine Loos edged out Lisa Cadiz into second following her 16 points.
This unique event was well supported by ‘On Course Golf’, BASF, IP
Global, Accuma and Zurich. It was Luiz Bertuol’s lucky day
as he was also drawn out of the raffle to win a Ryder Cup shirt signed by Luke Donald and Justin Rose, kindly donated by Zurich.
