Clown – World upside down was born with the intention to create a board game with good values inherent in it’s design. It’s a board game that is fun to play, but that also has an impact that goes beyond the kitchen table or living room couch.

By collaborating with the charity organization Clowns without Borders, Clown is increasing the quality of life of children in exposed situations around the world. We wish to thank you for contributing to a happier world by buying and playing this board game.

Introduction

Let the best cLown winThis is clown, the game where you and your opponents are competing on who can spread the most laughter throughout the world. The winner is the player who manage to build the most and the biggest cirkus tents. To get there, you have to buy paint, build tents and give your opponents a helping hand to earn some money. setupPlace the tent cards and the clown cards on their drawn out spots in the Trading area on the board. Fill up the paint shelf with paint buckets, three of each colour, one on each spot marked with two and three coins. The remaining buckets are placed in the bank with the coins next to the board. Place the intern on it’s spot in the air baloon.

Each player chooses a colour and collects the five clowns and the eight tent tiles of that colour. Everyone draws three tent cards, one clown card and receives three coins. Each player rolls the dice and selects a paint bucket in one of the colours shown. These buckets shall be taken from the bank, not from the paint shelf on the board. After that, each player places one of their clowns on the starting space of the scoring track at the top of board.

One of the players finally rolls one of the dice to determine who will have the first turn. The player who’s colour the die is showing picks up the clown nose and the game can begin.

the winner of the GAmeThe objective of the game is to reach the winning point of the scoring track before the other players. The number of points required to win depends on the number of players. 27, 25, 21 and 19

proGress of the GAmeClown is played in rounds where the players one at a time in clockwise order let one of their clowns perform an action on the game board. The player with the clown nose begins the round. When it’s your turn you can start by playing one or several clown cards, or by exchanging tent cards or paint buckets (see the section ”Barter” on page 9). You must always end your turn by placing one of your clowns on the board.

If you don’t have any clowns available, the turn passes on to the next player. You can’t perform any action in the game unless you have a clown to play (please note that it also requires a regular clown to play The Intern. Read more about The Intern on page 13.). The round is over when all players have placed all of their clowns on the game board. To prepare for the next round, all

points respectively for 3, 4, 5 and 6 players. This is marked by the little numbers on the scoring track. You collect points by building tents and by drawing point cards from the stack of clown cards.

players now brings all of their clowns back, except for the ones that are standing on tents that are under construction (see the section ”Building tents” on page 9). The clown nose is passed on clockwise to the next player who begins the next round (unless a player plays The Nose Snatcher – see page 12).

cLown cArdsTo draw a clown card, place one of your clowns on the space below the card stack and draw the card on top of the stack. The same number of clowns as number of players are allowed on this space. The card is kept and you can play it later when it’s your turn unless the card says ”Played immediately”. This is where you collect the paint buckets you need to build tents. When you place a clown on one of these spaces, you always start by rolling the dice. A paint bucket of each colour that the dice are showing are taken from the bank and placed on the first available space to the left on the corresponding colour strip on the paint shelf. There can never be more than five buckets of the same colour on the paint shelf. No more buckets are placed on the shelf if a colour strip is full when the dice are showing that colour.

There are three ways to get paint buckets:

Place your clown in The tombola to get a paint bucket in each colour the dice are showing. The price is one coin. The number of clowns allowed at the same time on this space is limited. One clown is allowed if you’re three of four players, two clowns if you’re five or six players. 1. Pay one coin.2. Roll the dice and take one paint bucket of each colour shown from the bank.

Place your clown in The chance to get a bucket in one of the colours the dice are showing for free. The bucket in the other colour is placed on the paint shelf. An unlimited number of clowns are allowed here.1. Roll the dice and fill up the paint shelf with one paint buckets of each colour shown. 2. Take one of the buckets you just placed on the shelf.

the tomboL A, the chAnce And the shopPlace a clown in The shop to buy the paint buckets you need for the price given on the paint shelf, that is, the number of coins above the leftmost bucket on a colour strip. Each clown are allowed to buy a maximum of three buckets at a time. An unlimited number of clowns are allowed here. 1. Roll the dice and fill up the paint shelf with one paint bucket of each colour shown. 2. Buy a maximum of three buckets for the given price. Please note that you always have to take the leftmost bucket of each colour.

Maximum number of cards and paint bucketsYou’re allowed to have a maximum of seven cards (clown cards and tent cards put together) and seven paint buckets at the same time. If you should get more than this by accident, you have to throw away cards and buckets of your choice so that only seven of each are left.

bArterWhen it’s your turn, you’re allowed to exchange three of your paint buckets for a new bucket of your choice from the bank, or throw away three tent cards and draw a new one from the tent card stack. The barter trade must take place before you place your clown on the board. The traded in buckets are placed in the bank, and the cards in the throw-away-pile. Barter trade between players is not allowed.

Page 12: Clown English game rules

buiLdinG tentsTo build a tent, you need a tent card, a tent tile matching the shape on the tent card and paint buckets in the numbers and colours displayed on the tent card.

1. Show your opponents that you hold the paint buckets in the right colours, and a tent tile in the shape the tent card is showing.

2. Pay the buckets the tent card specify to the bank and throw the tent card on the throw-away-pile.

3. Place the tent tile on the continent stated on the tent card. If the tent card states ”The world”, you can build your tent anywhere.

4. Place one of your clowns on one of the striped tents on the tent tile.

You’re allowed to place your tent anywhere in the grid of the continent you’re building your tent in, except adjacent to one of your own tents. You’re however allowed to place your tent with one of the corners adjacent to a corner of one of your other tents. You receive a point for each square in the grid your tent is covering, which is marked by moving your clown forward on the scoring track.

There can never be more tents under construction at the same time than there are players in the game. If there are four players, four tents are allowed to be built at the same time.

If the allowed number of tents are under construction, one of them has to be completed, and the clowns be brought back, before new tents are allowed to be built. A tent is completed when there is a clown placed on each of the striped tent symbols on the tile and the clowns are brought back at the end of a round. Clowns placed on tents that are not completed is NOT brought back until the end of the round in which the tent is completed.

point cArdsThe first player to build a tent in a continent receives the point card for that continent, which should be placed so that the other players can see it. The player moves the number of points displayed on the point cards forward on the scoring track. The player keeps the card until another player’s tents covers a larger area on the grid of that continent. In case an equally big area is covered, the first player to get the card keeps it. If someone takes over a point card from you, you have to move the number of points on the card backward on the scoring track, and the player that takes over the card moves forward the same number of steps. The first player to build tents in three different continents gets the point card marked ”The world”. The player keeps this card until another player has built tents in more continents.

end of the GAmeThe game ends when a player has reached the number of points required for the current number of players, and manages to hold on to that position until the end of the round. The small numbers on the scoring track marks the number of points required to win depending on the number of players. The game continues till the end of the round even when a player reaches the number of points required to win. If more than one player reaches that point in the same round, the player with the top score at the end of the round wins. If it’s a tie, the player whose tents covers the largest area on the game board wins.

heLp buiLdinG tentsYou have to help your opponents in building their tents to earn money in the game. When you choose to place your clown on one of your opponents tents that are under construction, you receive a coin from the bank. You don’t get payed if you place a clown on one of your own tents. Co-operation pays off.

cLown cArdsThere are two types of clown cards. One that are played immediately and affects all players, and one that you can play when it’s your turn, and that gives you advantages or your opponents dis-

thE nosE snatchErThe player who plays The Nose Snatcher gets the clown nose and begins the next round. The last player to play The Nose Snatcher gets the clown nose if more than one card is played in the same round. This card is played at the end of the round when the clown nose move on to the next player.

thE sluggardThe Sluggard is used to prevent an opponent from playing one of their clowns. The player has to put one of their clowns on the south pole, and thereby misses one of his/her turns. The lazy clown remains on the south pole till the end of the round.

paint droughtPlayed immediately. All paint buckets with the price of one coin are removed from the paint shelf. The player who drew the card gets to draw a new one.

1 pointYou receive one extra point. Move one step forward on the scoring track and place the card so that the other players can see it. Keep it in plain view till the end of the game (this is necessary if you need to cross check a player’s score).

thE swEEt talkErSweet talk an opponents clown to a tent of your choice. The opponent has to put one of their clowns on the given tent, and receives a coin. The sweet talked player plays as usual when it’s their turn, given they have any clowns left. You’re not allowed to sweet talk a player’s clown to his/her own tent.

advantages. If a player draws a clown card that is ”played immediately”, they get to draw a new clown card after the action on the first clown card has been carried out.

cLowns without bordersToday almost 30 million people around the world are on the run from wars, environmental disasters and poverty. Many more are suffering from diseases and lack of the resources required to lead a tolerable life. Every day, humanitarian organisations are working hard to assure the fundamental human rights to shelter, food and water for these people. But human beings also require intellectual and cultural input to develop, and ultimately to survive. It is in this field Clowns without Borders are acting.

our vision And missionClowns without Borders vision is a world filled with play, laughter and dreams, a world where every human being has the opportunity to develop, to express themselves freely, and to be able to feel hope even in exposed situations. Clowns without Borders mission is to spread laughter, joy and hope. We are sending out clowns and performers to children and communities living in war zones, areas of conflict and other crises throughout the world. We use humour and play to retain the human dignity and to give children and adults the possibility to develop. We also perform work in Sweden to raise the awareness of, and commitment to, people living in crises throughout the world. This is our contribution to make the world a better place. By buying this board game, you too are contributing. Read more about Clowns without Borders on www.skratt.nu
