The 4-H Record Book project equips youth with the life skill of accurate record keeping. From after-school snack inventory to savings account balances to feverish temperature spikes, records are relevant to make decisions today and plans for tomorrow. There are five steps for great record keeping: l) Determine your interests 2) Set your goals 3) Form an action plan 4) Do it! 5) Evaluate and make future plans. Q: Why are we re-launching Polk County Record Book rubrics? A: We want to provide clear and standard expectations and encourage creativity. There are three rubrics, but they are the same! Each rubric increases in point value as youth move from junior to intermediate to senior because juniors submit at least one project summary while seniors submit at least three. Other than point values, the rubrics are identical and all youth must score 90% to receive Record Book Awards in November. There are links within each rubric, directly connecting youth with re-sources that are necessary for success. In addition to new rubrics, record books can be electronic this year! Youth can maintain their record book on a blog or website and create videos capturing their yearly summary, but these are just suggestions. The options are endless! Browse Wix, Blogger,WordPress, Google Drive and YouTube if you’re thinking about creating an e-record book. Attention, youth: please get parent permission before creating online accounts! ENROLLMENT FEE DEADLINE

Focus

I-80 EXIT 142 CLOSURE

The deadline for 4-H members to submit their enrollment fee to the Polk County Extension office is May 15. This yearly fee is only applicable to grades 4-12, so Clover Kids (grades K-3) are not included. If this fee is not paid by May 15, youth will not be eligible to exhibit at the Polk County Fair or the Iowa State Fair. Are you wondering if you have already paid the yearly enrollment fee? Perhaps you already paid it for 2014-2015. This is possible since the year started September 15, 2014. To check, login to 4-H Online to view your member status:

Active members have enrolled in 4-H Online and paid the enrollment fee Inactive members have not enrolled in 4-H Online nor paid the enrollment fee Pending members have enrolled in 4-H Online but have not paid the enrollment fee

The fee is $35.00 per person in grades 5-12 or $30.00 per person in 4th grade and/or all new members. This fee cannot be paid online; it must be paid through the Extension Office. There are three options to pay the fee:

1. Pay over the phone with a credit card by calling Carla at (515) 957-5763 (enrollment + 3% service fee) 2. Drop off cash or check to the Extension Office between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday 3. Mail a check (made payable to Polk County Extension) to Attn: Carla Vanderheiden, Polk County Extension

Office, 1625 Adventureland Drive, Suite A, Altoona, IA 50009 Once the enrollment fee is received, your youth’s enrollment status will be updated from pending to active. If you have questions or need assistance, contact Carla. Again, if this fee is not paid by May 15, youth will not be eligible to exhibit at the Polk County Fair or the Iowa State Fair.

Due to road construction, I-80’s eastbound off-ramp at exit 142 is closed through May 21. As soon as it opens in May, the eastbound on-ramp will close until mid August. The Iowa Department of Transportation has posted a detour for motorists to follow. However, there is a recommended alternate route that is quicker and easier to navigate to the Polk County Extension Office. For both routes, see the map below.

URBANDALE 4-H RACES CARDBOARD BOAT

spotlight

ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE FACEBOOK GRANT

Urbandale 4-H rocked the BYOB (bring your own boat) race at the Urbandale Pool on February 28 and took first place! Their boat could be made of cardboard and duct tape ONLY. This was a terrific club activity. The club members re-searched cardboard boat designs and learned about buoyancy, and they learned how to make a boat that floats! They solicited cardboard and duct tape donations from area businesses and wrote thank you notes to their sponsors. They spent over 8 hours and 34 rolls of duct tape building the boat. They also practiced rowing and working as a team. Their boat was very seaworthy! They are considering entering it in another cardboard boat race this summer.

The Alleman Aces 4-H club donated to the ARL. Way to go!

Polk County 4-H received a Community Action Grant that will be used to purchase iPad’s for use at 4-H work-shops.

EASTER CARDS 4-H ROCKS!

A familiar name to Polk County 4-H, Cheryl Pence was awarded as a 2015 Friend of Extension award at the 2015 Exten-sion & Outreach Annual Conference in Ames, IA. You may recognize Cheryl as a judge in the exhibit building at the Polk County Fair; Cheryl also judges in Hardin, Delaware, and Jackson counties. She and her late husband, David, are known for community volunteerism and establishing 4-H scholarships through the Iowa 4-H Foundation to help 4-H members realize their educational goals. Pence has been involved in 4-H for more than 35 years. Friend of Extension awards recognize individuals who maintain high professional standards, foster professional rela-tionships, and sustain morale and prestige of the Extension Service. Congratulations, Cheryl, and see you in July!

Beaver Creek club members created Easter cards for Kennybrook Village Nursing Home in Grimes.

James Quinn, outgoing President of the Des Moines Lap-idary Society, visited the Urbandale 4-H club and dis-played his collection of rocks, gems, and fossils. He gave the members pointers on rock and fossil hunting right here in central Iowa as well as a polished stone keep-sake.

ALTOONA COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOTS IN NEED OF TLC

classifieds

STATEWIDE 4-H PHOTO CAMP LITTLE HANDS ON THE FARM

The Altoona Community Garden opened in the Spring of 2014. It contains 42 garden plots and is located in the SW cor-ner of Lions Park (507 13th Avenue SW, Altoona). There are two sizes of plots that local residents or clubs can rent for the season. Two large and four small plots are dedicated to planting for community giving. Produce is to be donated to local food pantries including the Altoona Caring Hands Food Bank and the Altoona Senior Meal Center. The community is seeking volunteers willing to adopt the community giving plots, plant, care for, and donate the produce. There are some funds available from last year's fundraising to purchase seeds or plants for the giving plots, but volunteers need to be pre-pared to fund the cost of planting. No rental is charged for these plots. Tilling and water are provided to all of the gar-dens, and there is an on-site tool shed with some supplies for use in the garden plot. Large garden plots are 15 ft. x 6 ft. Small garden plots are 6 ft. x 6 ft. The community garden is one of the initiatives of the Healthy Altoona Partnership, an all volunteer group organized in 2013. Information on the community gardens and how to adopt a plot is on the Partnership's blog: http://healthyaltoona.com/community-garden/plot-rental-application/

If you or your club is interested in adopting a community giving plot, please contact Terri Henkels at (515) 577-9760 or [email protected].

Polk County is searching for adult chaperones for the 2015 Taste of Camp in Madrid, Iowa from June 17-20. We need one female chaperone for the full camp and a male chaperone for the full or mini camp. It is free to attend if you chaperone!

Each year the State 4-H Council sponsors the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign, which raises money to fund projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign. Our goal has been placed at $30,030.30 with a suggested $3.00 per member donation to coincide with our 30th Anni-versary theme. Your investments contribute to: Providing financial assistance to help 4-H’ers attend 4-H camp or conference. Helping members from low-income families pay part of their annual 4-H program fee. Funding speakers and entertainment at the State 4-H Youth Conference, keeping registration fees affordable for

everyone. Improving the Iowa 4-H Center with new equipment to enhance campers’ experiences. We need your help to provide Iowa 4-H members with substantial funding! We are asking each 4-H club in Iowa to do-nate a minimum of $3.00 per member to the campaign. All clubs that meet the $3.00 per member goal will receive a special campaign certificate at their county recognition event. The top contributing counties and regions will be formal-ly recognized at the 2015 State 4-H Youth Conference in June. Donations are due to the Polk County Extension Office by May 15. Contact Marci for more information.
