Welcome to the Middle Level ELA Lesson Guide

Introduction

Teaching and learning can be a very rewarding process for both the teacher and students. Mrs. Allysia Cleveland and her students gave their consent for other educational personnel to take a partial view inside of their classroom to see them at work. With the understanding that our needs as professionals are at various levels, the lesson has been divided into brief scenes. Specifically, this video can afford teachers and administrators an opportunity to apply job embedded professional development based on the identified needs.

The first brief scene is the beginning of a close read lesson. Participants will view the video, take notes, and prepare to discuss in partner groups, table groups, or triads about strategies observed and/or what this resonates for them in their classroom. There are opportunities for participants to share what they are thinking in the whole group. This format will be the standard for the last two brief scenes (e.g. the middle of the lesson and the lesson closure).

The middle of the lesson is divided into two (2) brief scenes. The time for each scene is listed below: Beginning of the Lesson: 4:13Middle Part 1: 13:49Middle Part 2: 15:22Closure: 3:44

The lesson guide is set up as a PowerPoint to assist with the discussion. It is broken down by brief scenes to identify strategies used, transitions, informal assessments, etc.I sincerely desire that this lesson guide and the video will address teachers’ needs.

I can read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and cite textual evidence when writing to support conclusions.

I can assess how the author’s purpose shapes the content of the text.

Let’s Discuss the Beginning of the Lesson

What did you see? In about 3 minutes, discuss what you saw in this brief scene of the lesson with your neighbor and be prepared to comment.

Beginning of the Lesson

What were the students directed to do with the close read passage placed on their desks? Share your thoughts about the strategies used by the teacher with your neighbor seated next to you. You and your partner share with the next two partners. In your small groups share what you saw and your thoughts about the strategies used.

Lesson Guide

How might the strategies used at the beginning of the lesson work for the students as the lesson unfolds? Discuss your thoughts in Groups of 4. Share your thoughts with the whole group.

Beginning of a Lesson

In grade level groups, discuss what you observed and how you can use this information to add to your repertoire of ideas to begin a lesson. After 5 minutes, prepare to share your ideas with the group.
