Introduction 1

This documentation describes the installation and usage of the CLIP-STER Color Correction Panel. The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is a tactile colorist control panel especially designed for a handy and effi-cient color correction when using the CLIPSTER video system by DVS.

CLIPSTER together with its software and all accessories is a powerful high-definition video workstation with enormous flexibility, especially designed to meet the demands of modern post production houses.

With its multiple trackballs and control rings the CLIPSTER Color Cor-rection Panel offers color correction operators of CLIPSTER a very user-friendly environment. The additional and intuitive control of various ef-fects of CLIPSTER as well as of its user interface via the Color Correction Panel supplement the usage of the panel.

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is available as an accessory and optional feature for CLIPSTER.

If desired, the panel can be connected to another control panel, the CLIPSTER Transport Panel, that provides full edit bay style transport, jog/shuttle, function keys, locates and other functions for an even bet-ter and faster control of the CLIPSTER software.

The settings pane of this group with the entry ControlPanel select-ed from the topmost combo box provides several areas where you can configure the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel. They are explained in the following.

The Area ’Operation Mode’

The area Operation Mode provides a combo box where you can select the mode of operation for your connected control panel:

The Area ’Network’

With the area Network you configure the network settings of the CLIP-STER Color Correction Panel. These settings are used to connect the Color Correction Panel to the CLIPSTER video system:

combo box Select with the combo box of the area Opera-tion Mode the respective mode of operation for your connected control panel(s). It provides the following settings possibilities:

Spectrum Enables the stand-alone setup of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel.

Transport Enables the CLIPSTER Transport Control Panel in a stand-alone setup.

Spectrum + Transport

Enables the combined setup of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel and the CLIPSTER Trans-port Control Panel; the panels will be interconnected with their expansion connectors (see sec-tion “Rear Side” on page 2-4).

The different operation modes are op-tionally available features of CLIPSTER. Some of the settings possibilities men-tioned above may be hidden on your system because they are not licensed on your CLIPSTER video system.

IP-Address Enter in this field the IP address of the Ethernet port of the panel. It should be identical to the IP address set at the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel (see section “How to Configure the Eth-ernet Port of the Panel” on page 3-5).

Page 24: CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel (Version 1.0) · 2012-01-10 · Color Correction Panel the manuals a nd guides delivered with the CLIP-STER Color Correction Panel must be read and

2-8

CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel User Guide

Port Number Either enter in this field the TCP port number of the Ethernet port of the panel manually or use the controls to the right of the entry field to step the value up or down until it is set as desired. It should be identical to the port number set at the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel (see section “How to Configure the Ethernet Port of the Panel” on page 3-5).

As a port number it is recommended to use numbers greater than 1000 (to be on the safe side > 30000), because es-pecially the lower values are very often used by standard programs/services (e.g. HTTP: port 80 or FTP: port 23).

Status The status field indicates the state of the CLIP-STER Color Correction Panel. When it shows Offline, the panel is not connected to CLIP-STER. If it shows Online, the panel is currently connected to CLIPSTER and can be used to-gether with the CLIPSTER software.

PING Use the button PING to make sure that the Color Correction Panel is still connected to the CLIP-STER software and able to respond. It sends a ping request to the panel, and the panel will re-spond by illuminating all its LEDs indicating that it is connected to CLIPSTER and in a responsive state.

The ping request sent to the panel with this button is a proprietary call and not identical to a network ping request.

CONNECT With this button the CLIPSTER software tries to connect to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Pan-el. When successful, the field Status will change from Offline to Online.

DISCONNECT This button severs the connection of the CLIP-STER software to the Color Correction Panel. Afterwards the field Status will display Off-line. Once the panel is disconnected with this button, no further reconnection trials are per-formed by the CLIPSTER software in this ses-sion. In case you want to connect to the panel again, you have to do it manually with the but-ton CONNECT, or close the CLIPSTER software with the autoconnect feature enabled and after-wards start it again.

The additional settings of the settings pane to configure the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel offer you, for example, the possibility to enable or disable the autoconnect feature:

Brightness With this setting you configure the brightness of the trackball illumination. For this you can select one of eight illumination intensities and the low-er the value, the lower will be the illumination.

Style This setting enables you to change the layout of the panel settings. You can choose between two differ-ent predefined layouts:

DVS Standard panel layout of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Pan-el.

DVS Reverse Alternative panel layout of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Pan-el, i.e. the settings for lift and gain available on the panel will be switched (trackballs and rings as well as knobs).

Autoconnect This setting enables or disables the autoconnect feature of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel. Further information about this can be found in sec-tion “The Autoconnect Feature” on page 4-3.

To bring a change of the autoconnection setting into effect, you have to restart the CLIPSTER software.

DEFAULT This button resets most configuration settings of the group ControlPanel back to their default val-ues. The settings of the areas Operation Mode and Network will not be reset.

APPLY This button confirms your alterations to the settings of the group ControlPanel without closing the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool. The new settings will then be in effect for the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel.

Installation and Configuration 3

This chapter details all information necessary to install the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel to a CLIPSTER video system in a stand-alone setup, i.e. without another control panel. The CLIPSTER Color Correc-tion Panel comes with an Ethernet connection to connect to the CLIP-STER video system. It can either be connected to the LAN connection of CLIPSTER directly or via a hub.

First, the different setups and connections of the panel to the CLIPSTER video system are described. After that follows an explanation how to configure the Ethernet ports of the panel and of CLIPSTER properly to IP addresses so that they are capable of working together later. The chapter will be concluded with a description how to activate the Color Correction Panel in the CLIPSTER software.

After all this the panel will be installed correctly and ready to use with the CLIPSTER software which is described in chapter “Operation” on page 4-1.

This chapter describes the stand-alone setup of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel. If you are provided with a further con-trol panel (e.g. the CLIPSTER Transport Control Panel) in addi-tion to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel, you can find the installation description and configuration details of the further panel as well as how to connect the Color Correction Panel in the user guide of the other control panel.

3.1 Installation and Setup

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel must be installed properly before you can start working with it. It comes with an Ethernet connection (10 or 100 Mbps) to connect to the CLIPSTER video system and it can be installed in two possible setups:

1. It can be connected to the LAN connection of CLIPSTER directly.2. The connection can be routed over a network hub.

Both setups will be addressed in this section.

3.1.1 How to Connect to CLIPSTER Directly

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel can be connected directly to CLIPSTER via a crossover network cable. For this perform the following:

Place the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel on a firm, flat surface near the CLIPSTER video system, for example, on a table next to its keyboard.

After this set up the external connection from the Color Correction Panel to the CLIPSTER video system by connecting the Ethernet port of the panel with a free Ethernet port (LAN connector) of the CLIPSTER video system:

The cable for the external connection is a crossover network cable. A standard network cable cannot be used for the di-rect connection. Please use an appropriate cable.

The CLIPSTER video system provides two Ethernet ports. In the operating system identify the port of CLIPSTER that you want to use for the connection. Later, when configuring the IP address, you have to configure the correct port to enable the connection to the Color Correction Panel.

Usually, the Ethernet interface card of the Color Correction Panel is preinstalled at the rear of the panel. If this is not the case, simply install it in slot no. 1 and fasten it with screws prior to any installation.

3.2 Configuration of the Ethernet Ports

Once everything is set up properly as described in section “Installation and Setup” on page 3-2, you have to configure the Ethernet ports of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel and of the CLIPSTER video sys-tem properly to IP addresses so that they are capable of working to-gether later. How to do this is described in this section: First, it will be described how to configure the Ethernet port of the panel, followed by an explanation how to set up the Ethernet port of CLIPSTER.

3.2.1 How to Configure the Ethernet Port of the Panel

The Ethernet port of the panel can be set and configured to any IP ad-dress to connect to the CLIPSTER video system. How to set up and con-figure the Ethernet port of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is described in the following:

Turn on the panel and give it a little time to initialize properly.

When the panel has finished its start-up procedure, press the keys [Page 4] and [Page 8] of the panel simultaneously.

This will activate the configuration menu and the right display of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel will show something like the follow-ing:

Figure 3-3: Right display after activating the configuration menu

Operation 4

This chapter describes how to operate the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel together with the CLIPSTER software.

First, the most basic operation is explained, i.e. what to observe during the starting of the panel and the software, and how to turn it off after you have finished your work. However, each time the CLIPSTER soft-ware is started and/or the Color Correction Panel is turned on they have to connect to each other first to be able to work together. This can be done either automatically (autoconnection) or manually. Both pro-cedures will be explained in this chapter as well.

After that follows a description of how to use the CLIPSTER Color Cor-rection Panel together with the CLIPSTER software. Furthermore, this chapter contains a listing of the individual effects that can be adjusted via the Color Correction Panel and the operational items of the panel that have to be used for the respective effect. The chapter will be con-cluded with a description how to reset values to their default settings.

4.1 Basic Operations

This section explains the most basic operations of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel. It is described how to start the panel and how to turn it off after you have finished your work. However, each time the CLIP-STER software is started and/or the Color Correction Panel is turned on they have to connect to each other first to be able to work together. This can be either done automatically (autoconnection) or manually. Both procedures will be explained in this section as well.

4.1.1 Starting or Shutting Down the Panel

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel can be turned on or off easily with the power switch located at the rear of the panel (see section “Rear Side” on page 2-4). But, in order to work with the CLIPSTER Col-or Correction Panel in the CLIPSTER software, they have to be connect-ed to each other first.

In most cases the software connects itself automatically to the Color Correction Panel as soon as both are running, meaning you can turn on or off the panel and start or end the CLIPSTER software in any sequence you like and after a short period of time the panel will be registered and connected to the CLIPSTER software automatically. Then the displays of the Color Correction Panel will show you the following:

Figure 4-1: Greeting message

As soon as this is shown by the displays of the Color Correction Panel, it has connected to the CLIPSTER software successfully.

Nevertheless, for an automatic connection of the CLIPSTER software to the Color Correction Panel you have to enable this feature first which can be done with the check box Autoconnect of the group Control-Panel in the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool (see section “The Autocon-nect Feature” on page 4-3).

When the autoconnect feature is disabled, no automatic connection of the software will be performed. In such a case you can connect the soft-ware to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel at any time manually (see section “How to Connect to the Panel Manually” on page 4-4).

After your work with the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is finished, you can turn off the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel and the CLIP-STER software in any sequence you want. As soon as one of them is turned off/exited, the connection between them will be severed.

4.1.2 The Autoconnect Feature

The check box Autoconnect of the group ControlPanel in the CLIP-STER Configuration Tool (see figure 2-3 on page 2-6) enables an auto-matic connection of the CLIPSTER software to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel. With this feature selected the CLIPSTER software tries to connect to the panel during the starting of the software and, if un-successful, afterwards again at certain intervals. Once a panel is found, they are automatically connected to each other.

In essence with the autoconnect feature activated you can turn on or off the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel at any time and CLIPSTER will always connect successfully to it again after a short period of time when both are running.

The user interface of the CLIPSTER software provides in its project in-formation (bottom right of the user interface) an item that allows you to monitor the connection state of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Pan-el. Usually, this item (displaying the words ’ControlPanel’) is hidden in the user interface. Only when a change of the connection state is de-tected by the software, will it be visible shortly, indicating its respective state. The following states are possible:

If the Autoconnect check box is not enabled, no automatic connection to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel will be performed. In such a case you have to connect the CLIPSTER software to the panel manually (see section “How to Connect to the Panel Manually” on page 4-4). Nevertheless, after a manual connection of the Color Correction Panel you may turn it off and afterwards on again and the software will au-tomatically reconnect the panel. This will work as long as this particular CLIPSTER software session is not exited. After that no automatic recon-nection will be performed anymore and, when starting the software again, you have to connect to the panel manually once more (because of a disabled autoconnect feature).

To bring a change of the autoconnection setting into effect, you have to restart the CLIPSTER software.

4.1.3 How to Connect to the Panel Manually

In case the CLIPSTER software is not able to find the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel or when the autoconnect feature is deactivated, you may want to connect the CLIPSTER software to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel manually. For this you have to use the Configuration Tool of CLIPSTER:

Open the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool and activate the tab to set the default settings (for example, via the menu bar with Options » Defaults…).

With the default settings selected choose from the group list to the left of the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool the entry ControlPanel.

Then the settings pane to the right will alter its appearance and the set-tings for the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel will be displayed (see figure 2-3 on page 2-6).

Prior to connecting the panel manually confirm that the network settings to connect to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel are con-figured correctly (cf. section “Activation of the Panel in the Soft-ware” on page 3-10).

After that click on the button CONNECT to connect to the panel manually.

The CLIPSTER software now tries to connect to the Color Correction Panel. When this is achieved, the field Status will change its display to Online.

Once the connection is successfully established, you may close the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool.

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is now connected to the CLIP-STER software and it is ready to be used together with the software.

4.1.4 How to Disconnect the Panel Manually

Usually, the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is disconnected automat-ically as soon as it is turned off. However, in case you want to discon-nect it and prevent further autoconnect trials of the CLIPSTER software during this particular session, you may disconnect the panel manually. For this perform the following:

Open the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool and activate the tab to set the default settings (for example, via the menu bar with Options » Defaults…).

With the defaults settings selected choose from the group list to the left of the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool the entry ControlPanel.

Then the settings pane to the right will alter its appearance and the set-tings for the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel will be displayed (see figure 2-3 on page 2-6).

In the settings pane click on the button DISCONNECT to sever the connection to the panel manually.

The CLIPSTER software now disconnects the Color Correction Panel. When this is achieved, the field Status will change its display to Off-line. Afterwards no further reconnection trials are performed by the CLIPSTER software in this session. In case you want to connect to the panel again, you have to do it manually as described in section “How to Connect to the Panel Manually” on page 4-4, or close the CLIPSTER software with the autoconnection feature enabled and afterwards start it again.

Close the CLIPSTER Configuration Tool.

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is now disconnected from the CLIPSTER software and no further reconnection trials will be performed in this session.

4.2 Working with the Color Correction Panel

After starting the CLIPSTER software and once a successful connection to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel is established (see section “Starting or Shutting Down the Panel” on page 4-2), you are able to use the panel together with the CLIPSTER software, i.e. with the CLIP-STER Edit Tool. Then the display of the Color Correction Panel will show you the following:

Figure 4-2: Greeting message

This indicates that the CLIPSTER software is successfully connected to the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel.

To begin to work with the panel perform the following:

Add at least one clip to the video track of the timeline either by loading a project that contains clips or by adding a clip to the bin and then to the timeline. How to do either one of the procedures is described in the “CLIPSTER Edit Tool” user guide.

Place the timeline cursor on the clip that should undergo a change of effect, for example, a color correction.

Next select one of the effects from the page keys of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel in case the desired one is not already selected (for a list of all page keys and their associated effects see section “The Effects Pages” on page 4-7).

Then use the respective controls of the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel and the selected clip will be changed accordingly.

Once CLIPSTER software and Color Correction Panel are suc-cessfully connected, a default effect is activated immediately (usually the effect of the [Page 1] key). This default effect can then be used right away as soon as a clip is available in the vid-eo track of the timeline area.

The effects operator selected via the page keys of the panel will be added to the clip automatically as soon as a value is altered at the Color Correction Panel. You can see this in the properties of the respective timeline clip: For example, if a primary color correction is applied to the clip, the primary color correction operator will be added automatically to the clip. Furthermore, when the primary color correction operator is visible in the CLIPSTER software, you can see the alterations performed at the panel immediately in the settings areas of the operator.

4.4 Resetting Values

The reset keys (see section “Top Side” on page 2-2) usually reset the values adjusted with the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel back to their default settings. They reset either the values set with the trackballs and rings or with the knobs.

However, in case an effects page allows to set values with the trackballs and/or rings as well as with the knobs, the knob values have priority over the values set with the trackballs and rings, meaning the reset keys will always reset the knob values only in case both control elements can be used.

On some effects pages the reset buttons enable functions oth-er than a reset. If such is the case their functionality will be de-scribed in section “The Effects Pages” on page 4-7 as well.

Example: The left key resets either the ring ( ) or the knob A, whereas the right key either resets the trackball ( ) or the knob B.

Figure 4-3: Example of reset keys

Example: With the effect for zooming and panning selected (key [Page 4]), you can adjust via the knob A the horizontal panning of the clip, while the ring 1 zooms the width of the clip. The respective reset key (key [Reset /A]) will always reset the value for a horizontal panning only (the value adjusted with knob A). In this case you can set back the zooming with the key [Reset /C] which will reset all zooming parameters.

A.2 Troubleshooting and Self-Test

If for some reason the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel does not give you the expected results, take a moment to do some investigating. The most important concept is that you have your Color Correction Panel connected and configured properly as outlined in chapter “Installation and Configuration” on page 3-1. Take a moment to double-check your setup.

A common problem is forgetting to turn on the power switch of the panel.

Nevertheless, the CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel has a self-test mode which aids in troubleshooting the panel. The self-test mode can be ac-cessed by pressing and holding the keys [Page 1] and [Page 2] during power-up.

When in the self-test mode of the panel, the keys (page as well as reset) and LEDs are tested by pressing the respective key. When a key is pressed, the corresponding LED illuminates indicating that key and LED are functioning properly.

The trackballs and rings are tested by rolling the balls or turning the rings. The direction and control will be indicated in the left display. With this the illumination and different colors of the trackballs can be tested as well.

To test the knobs below the displays you have to turn them. The value of each knob will be indicated in the display to the right.

A.3 Footswitch

The CLIPSTER Color Correction Panel provides a GPI jack at its rear. Any normally open switch contact with a ¼-inch mono plug will work.

Figure A-1: GPI connection

To self-test the panel the CLIPSTER software must be closed.
