Why do women get hemorrhoids during delivery?Hemorrhoids are very common, especially during childbirth. During pregnancy your blood volume increases. During labor, the pressure inside the veins of the anus is increased by both pushing and the passage of the baby through the birth canal. It is this increased pressure and over-extension of the anus that is typically responsible for developing painful, external hemorrhoids during childbirth.

Am I really likely to develop hemorrhoids during childbirth?Yes. Unfortunately, many women develop hemorrhoids during childbirth for the reasons discussed above. Ten percent of women get hemorrhoids during pregnancy and keep them through delivery. In addition, another 25% of women who did not have hemorrhoids during pregnancy acquire them during delivery. This means that collectively you have a 1 in 3 chance of leaving the hospital after delivery with hemorrhoids. To make matters worse, 24% of women who leave the hospital with hemorrhoids after childbirth still have them 4 weeks after delivery.1, 2 Delivery-induced hemorrhoids are one of the leading complaints of new mothers.
