Our Keele courses are run over three days and are intended for Specialty Trainees in their penultimate or final years of training; trainees at an earlier stage may also be interested. They are also open to SAS doctors wishing to prepare for a consultant position. Courses are specialty-based and satisfy the curriculum requirements for acquiring management and leadership skills to complete training. Our courses will prepare participants for the transition from training to independent specialist practice at consultant level, introducing them to contemporary concepts of leadership and management, as well as offering insights into the consultant appointment process. The sessions are themed and linked to the new Healthcare Leadership Model. The programme design includes interactive presentations from policy experts, personal development consultants and other senior people experienced in the particularly specialty. This two-day programme is intended for SAS Doctors who wish to extend their understanding of clinical management and leadership as part of their professional development. The overall aim of the course is to provide understanding of clinical management and leadership in today’s healthcare system, and to equip participants with knowledge, skills and attributes to enable them to be more effective in their roles. The course design includes a mixture of interactive talks from policy experts, personal development consultants and senior clinicians, and small group activities. The sessions are themed and linked to the new Healthcare Leadership Model: they include understanding current DH policy and how the NHS operates, developing yourself as a leader and an introduction to some useful management tools for developing and leading services. Keele Specialty Trainee courses focus on: examining what leading and managing mean

in the context of the Consultant role; creating a sound understanding of how the

NHS operates and is financed; helping course members to prepare for

successful interviews and their early years as a Consultant;

enabling participants to develop skills in

service improvement; enhancing personal effectiveness through a

menu of leadership and management skills and techniques.

Learning outcomes will be: a working knowledge of NHS structure, policy

and finance to support the early years as a Consultant;

greater proficiency in the key leadership and

management skills required for effective practice, including a focus on service improvement;

confidence to apply successfully for a

Consultant post.

The Keele SAS Doctors’ courses focus on: developing a good understanding of NHS

structure, policy and finance; creating an appreciation of how SAS doctors

can contribute effectively to leadership and management in the NHS;

enhancing personal effectiveness through a

menu of leadership and management skills and techniques;

exploring the special contribution of the SAS

doctor and how to manage your career. Learning Outcomes will be: greater confidence to play an active role in

leading clinical services; the ability to use a wider range of leadership

and management skills in everyday practice; a working understanding of service

improvement techniques and how to introduce service change.
