• A lead-acid battery is made up of negative and positive plates(s) submerged in an acid-water solution(electrolyte)

• Lead acid batteries can be classified further as wet (flooded), gel or AGM absorbed glass mat.

Ampere-Hour (or Amp-Hours or Ah)•Is a measure of energy storage capacity•Commonly expressed as c/20 rate, 20 hour discharge period•Ah/discharge period = # amps the battery can supply over the discharge period to a voltage of 10.5v at 80◦F•Example - a 75 Ah battery will supply (75/20=) 3.75 amps for 20 hours at 80◦F•Faster discharge rates will have a lower number, due to greater efficiency losses

Reserve Capacity (RC)•Originally intended to indicate the reserve time available to run key automotive electrical accessories if the alternator fails•Is the time (in minutes) that a new, fully charged battery will supply 25 amps at 80◦F, to a discharge voltage of 10.5v

Cold Cranking Amps•Intended to indicate batteries ability to start an engine in cold temperatures•Amps that can be removed from a new, fully charged battery at 0◦F for 30 seconds, maintaining min 7.2v
