Small Can Be Beautiful !Small Can Be Beautiful !Small Can Be Beautiful !Small Can Be Beautiful ! Even the smallest outside space can be made into a welcoming retreat after a hard day at the office.

If you have a small garden, you need to plan carefully to ensure it meets your individual needs. It doesn’t have to be complicated, you can make it interesting without it being fussy. It can have good clean lines and interesting angles.

Do you need a lawn? If your plot is very small you should consider the manoeuvrability of a lawn mower and where you would dump the clippings. Patio stones or gravel may be a better option and more easily maintained. If you must have a ‘bit of green’ perhaps consider artificial grass....no mowing, looks good all year round, and you can even clean it with a vacuum cleaner!

Of course, the main idea of having a garden is usually to have somewhere peaceful to sit and wind down, enjoy the sun or even entertain. Think about seating. Check out the path of the sun and arrange your seating area to get the full benefit throughout the day. Make sure the area you designate for seating is bigger than you think you'll need. A table and four chairs can take up quite a lot of space, so make sure you’re not going to tip over the edge of the area when your chair is pulled back.

To make your garden look bigger, there are a number of tricks you can use. Hide your boundary with plants and shrubs, whether in pots or beds and this can increase the sense of space. Use perspective to create a sense of distance by placing a small ornament or statue at the end of a narrow path.

Create some gaps that, in an enclosed space, encourage you to look through them into the space beyond, while looking from an open area into a densely planted one can give a sense of distance. This will make your small garden seem more spacious.

Plants can be a mixture of sizes, sometimes it’s better to have larger plants or trees, but make sure they don’t grow to the extremes and cut out the sunlight! Tall plants draw your eye up and out into the world beyond and help to link the land with the sky. They can also increase your privacy.

Colour is not as important as structure, form and perspective. Evergreens will help to provide structure even in the frosty winter days. Where you include colour make sure it’s against a good green background with foliage.

The important thing is to create something you will enjoy!

If you are interested in making the most of your small outside space be sure to get the right advice from an experienced gardener or landscape specialist. CWB Landscaping in Reading, would be more than happy to discuss your requirements, provide advice and even do all the hard work.

(These tips were inspired by “Small Gardens”, of the “How to Garden” series of books by Alan Titchmarsh, published by the BBC.)

Increase the appeal & value of your home From Simon Lee at Property Excellence in Twyford

In recent months we’ve seen first-hand how investing in your home not only provides you with a nicer living environment, it can also add significant value and appeal if you’re considering selling.

Here are a few points to consider if you are looking to refresh your home and ensure you keep as much money focused on the purchase of higher quality materials and features and avoid any nasty surprise costs:

• Establish your project requirements before you commit You will typically achieve a much fuller outline of your requirements once you’ve engaged an expert as they should be able to highlight all the intricate aspects that you need to consider to achieve the look and feel for your home. Clients will often have a change of room layout in mind (sometimes structurally as well as cosmetically) which will require additional electrical and plumbing considerations for example. This doesn’t need to drastically affect your plan but it can have a financial impact, so be aware as certain slight adaptations can help save significant funds.

• Design for your requirements (or those of anticipated buyers) If you have a young family (or are trying to appeal to that market) consider how simple modifications could have a significant impact– things like easy access to outdoor areas, increasing natural light, height of work units etc. Similarly, if your children are leaving home, you may be looking to relax or entertain more and if so, what vibe do you want to set and which colours and materials will help you achieve that.

• Get and use a project plan with your chosen supplier We provide every client a project plan which shows you what to expect and when. You’ll know who is going to be working within your home, when and how long for – this is vital and ensures you/we minimise delays.

• Establish Who Is In Charge At Property Excellence, I take responsibility for all projects so you only ever have one person to call if you have any questions or queries.

• Get References This gives potential clients more insight through the words of previous clients.

We hope this helps and if you have any projects in mind, we offer a free design consultation and quote service so if you are ever in need call me, Simon, on: 01189 100 130 / www.properx.co.uk.

Lemon Drizzle Cake

For the cake (makes a 7" cake or try it in individual bun tins)For the cake (makes a 7" cake or try it in individual bun tins)For the cake (makes a 7" cake or try it in individual bun tins)For the cake (makes a 7" cake or try it in individual bun tins)

300g sunflower spread

300g caster sugar

6 eggs

300g gluten free self raising flour or Free from flour– sieved.

4 Lemons - rind and juice

For the drizzle toppingFor the drizzle toppingFor the drizzle toppingFor the drizzle topping

4 Lemons - rind and juice

200g caster sugar

200ml cold water

Ideally the drizzle topping should be ready at the same time the cake

comes out of the oven so you can add the drizzle when it is still hot.

1. Pre heat oven 350⁰F, 180⁰C (160⁰C fan oven).

2. Line a cake tin with baking parchment or grease bottom and

sides of cake tin with extra sunflower spread.

3. Grate 4 lemons and put zest aside.

4. Squeeze juice from the 4 lemons and put in a saucepan, bring to

the boil and boil vigorously until reduced significantly in quantity

(to approx 1-2 tablespoons). Put aside to cool.

5. Cream sugar and sunflower spread.

6. Add half the flour and 3 of the eggs into the creamed mixture and

mix until blended.

7. Add the remainder of the flour, the lemon rind and the eggs. Mix,

scraping sides of bowl to ensure all ingredients are well blended.

9. Gently mix in the cooled lemon juice.

10. Pour mixture into tin and place in the oven.

11. Bake for 50-60 minutes, test cake with a cake tester. The cake is

ready when the tester comes out clean. It may need more time

since the cooking time can vary for different ovens.

12. Put all ingredients for the drizzle topping in a pan over a low heat.

13. Dissolve the sugar, stirring frequently and watching to make sure it

does not overheat.

14. Once the sugar has dissolved bring to the boil and simmer

vigorously until it has reduced by half in quantity and has a syrupy

consistency.

Immediately the cake comes out of the oven, insert a knife gently into

the cake a number of times. Then use a spoon to pour the drizzle

across the surface of the cake. Leave to cool before removing from the

tin.

This cake is suitable for freezing.

Employment Law is always

changing and this year is no exception.

This summer Settlement Agreements were introduced as

a means of settling disputes between employers and

employees.

Like compromise agreements,

the advantage of these agreements is they enable

employers and employees to agree terms to end the

employment relat ionship without the need for protracted

litigation.

Of course, a significant part of a settlement agreement will be

the financial compensation. It is important that any

settlement is set at the right level for you.

ensure the best deal is agreed for you, please call

What if your top performer ends up like Luis Suarez? With the football season under way, many people will be dusting off their season tickets and tuning into the endless antics (on and off the pitch) of this madcap striker (although he still has to serve out his 6 match ban hanging over from last season!) Clearly, Suarez isn’t the wisest owl in the tree with such a terrible temper, but truly a world class player. He is paid a fortune and in return, expected to perform at a high standard, so you need to have a slight chuckle that he wants to leave Liverpool Football Club (those who’ve defended racism and assault) to go elsewhere, surely his new club could be upset and confused as to why he could perform so badly. If for any reason, a fellow employee seems to be heading in Suarez’s footsteps, as their manager, you should consider the reason for the downturn in performance. Speak to the employee, ask them what is happening. You might find that they are having particular problems which you can address with support to help them to get back on their feet. However if there’s no reasonable explanation, a performance improvement plan can be started, which should comply with the principles set out in the ACAS code. A series of formal meeting must take place, and warnings may be issued at each stage. Targets and improvement periods need to be set out. At the end of each period, a review meeting needs to be held, and, after appropriate warnings, the decision to dismiss may be made. Employer’s must take care to ensure that performance management processes are fair, or they may be exposed to risk of unfair dismissal claims, for which the current compensatory award may be as high as £74,200. Although this may only amount to half of Suarez's weekly wage, for everyone else here today it is a significant sum. For further information, contact us so we can guide you through addressing poor performance.

Staying in shape during Autumn/Winter Some simple tips that can go a long way to staying fit and healthy during the winter months.

• Measure your chest, waist, hips, thighs at the start of your winter fitness programme....a great way to keep motivated, a great start point. Take a photo.

• Plan ahead, what are your goals? What do you want to achieve? Something that is personal to you. Anything is

possible, nothing is impossible.

• Train a little bit every day. Take the stairs at all times, run, skip, cycle every day, even just for a few minutes -- it's far

better than nothing.

• Instead of avoiding the cold, embrace it, getting outside for some fresh air and open space will be good for your mind as well as your body. “It’s too cold”, “It’s raining”, “It’s too dark” are excuses! Buddy up with a friend to keep from cancelling your fitness plans.

• Be positive. Most important of all is to approach your winter exercise programme with a positive mind set. After all, there are some excellent advantages to exercising in winter, it is an ideal time to lose weight as your metabolism naturally speeds up to help keep you warm. Keep moving through winter and you'll be a step ahead when the warm weather arrives.

• Find a friend. There’s nothing like the knowledge that someone is waiting for you to motivate you to stick to your plans

– even in the bleak mid-winter.

• Personally, my purpose for eating right is to get the most out of fitness that I possibly can. It’s the knowledge that without a great healthy eating plan, exercise alone does not work. If my food is good and clean and I'm consistent, then I will benefit more from the exercise. I benefit from a combination of the two.

• Have fun and smile! Exercise is about fun and enjoyment. If you have a bad day make the next one even better.

Is it hard work to stay fit and healthy? Yes of course! Will you have bad days? Yes of course!

Can you achieve anything we set our minds to? Yes of course!

Go for it! John Polston

WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS answered by Lorena Neep RCST

Q. How does Craniosacral Therapy work? A. It is a calming, non-manipulative treatment. The therapist uses a gentle listening touch which encourages the body to

deeply relax and thus be in the best position to release any physical or emotional stresses or tension which may be causing discomfort or anxiety. Craniosacral Therapy supports your body’s innate ability to balance and heal itself.

Q. Who can benefit from Craniosacral Therapy? A. It can benefit anyone suffering from acute or chronic physical problems such as headaches, backache, joint problems or

injuries. Because it is so gentle it is suitable for everyone from newborn babies to the elderly. Q. How can it help babies and children? A. Babies may be unable to fully release the stresses they experienced during their birth process and this may show itself in

their inability to settle to sleep, cry inconsolably or suffer from colic. Craniosacral Therapy can help the baby/child to relax and release the stresses, thus enabling the child to experience a greater sense of well-being and self-esteem as it grows.

Q. What happens during a session? A. The therapist will take a case history and ascertain the reason for your visit. You will have an opportunity to ask any

questions and discuss a course of treatment. You will remain fully clothed and lie or sit comfortably whilst being treated. Each person’s experiences are different but, you may feel deeply relaxed, notice warmth or have an increased awareness of emotions and connection with your body. Treatments will last up to 90 minutes for the first and 60 minutes for follow-up sessions.

Quote ‘Click Berkshire’ when booking to receive a £5 discount on your first treatment.
