Kids quibble and giggle at national simultaneous storytime It’s a library storytime like no other – kids gathered across the nation including at Isaac libraries to all read the same story book ‘The Brother’s Quibble’ by Aaron Blabey for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Held nationally on Wednesday May 27, National Simultaneous Storytime events were enjoyed throughout last week by parents and children in Moranbah, Nebo, Middlemount, Dysart, Clermont, Glenden and Carmila libraries.

Isaac Libraries bought ‘The Brother’s Quibble’ to life through a number of fun

children’s activities including making daisy chains and playing with green goo as well as making brown paper crowns, like the ones the characters wear in the book.

Organised by the Australian Library and Information Association, the event in its 15th year, promotes the value of reading and literacy, the importance of Australia’s book industry and the role libraries play in our communities.

For more information contact Isaac Regional Council on 1300 ISAACS (472 227), visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au or find us on Facebook.

The Clermont Hospital Auxiliary (CHA) is a not for profit

community organisation which aims to support the staff

and patients of the Clermont Hospital in providing quality

care to our community. The Auxiliary has been working

within our local community for over 35 years. The

current voluntary committee and members strive to raise

funds to enable the improvement of health services for

the residents of our community.

Last year, the CHA was very kindly gifted housing by the

Rio Tinto / Blair Athol Joint Venture. These houses are

designed to provide affordable accommodation for both

hospital workers and local community members.

To enable the continued success and sustainability of

the CHA, we are seeking more members to assist in

achieving the goals of the organisation. The CHA is

a relaxed, friendly group who meet over lunch every

second month.

We will be holding our Annual General Meeting on June

Weekly Challenge: Mindful eatingDo you think about what you eat while you are eating it or do you just eat without noticing? Mindful eating is about being aware of your food – the taste, smell, texture and appearance of your food. This week’s challenge is to develop your appreciation for food through mindful eating. This means - bringing your senses to your eating. Notice texture, taste, and be present with each meal and snack you consume this week! In other words, take the time to really enjoy your food and taste it properly.

“Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with ourselves, the world and Nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us to deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

Speech of Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi at the 69 session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)on September 27, 2014. Quoted from “INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA Common Yoga Protocol” Government of India.

Health Matters

Men’s Health Week

All this emphasis on the health of boys and men - what’s that about? They’re alright, aren’t they?

In many cases, the answer is no.

A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. Right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts. Alarmingly, Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that’s five men a day, on average). Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths:

The 2015 theme ‘MOMENTS IN TIME’ recognises that every individual, family and community can find health-giving opportunities despite the many and varied challenges, barriers and obstacles to better health that life puts in the way.

So what are the most common male problems?

Heart attack and related disorders - Coronary heart disease (CHD), including heart attacks (interrupted blood supply to the heart due to a blocked blood vessel) and angina (temporary chest pain caused by reduced blood supply to the heart),

has been identified as the most common cause of sudden death in Australia.

Stroke - Stroke is a condition that is experienced when adequate blood supply to the brain becomes interrupted as a result of a blocked or ruptured artery. The outcome of such an event can often manifest as paralysis of different parts of the body or speech problems.

Cancer - Cancer is the name given to a condition in which abnormal changes within body cells can cause them to multiply out of control. The resulting growth can damage surrounding tissues and organs and migration of the defective cells to other parts of the body can lead to extensive damage to a wide range of organ systems. Various forms of cancer are amongst the leading causes of death for both the males in Australia.

Diabetes - Type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes) is a form of diabetes that usually makes its first appearance in adulthood, typically has milder symptoms than type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin-dependent diabetes) and can be aggravated by obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Lifestyle factors are an important contributor to diabetes among the male population.

Mental health - Mental health is an important consideration for Australian men. Male suicide rates although fluctuating are between three to five times higher than the rest of the population.

What can you do?

An opportunity a day keeps the doctor away – so develop a healthy, active lifestyle and stay well.

We recognise how difficult it can be to find time for health and wellbeing in a busy schedule. By making small adjustments to your daily routine, you can find ways to build health-giving practices into your everyday life. Adopting a positive approach that makes the most of small moments of opportunity to improve your overall health and wellbeing continuously.

In other words, it’s all about what works for you. By reflecting on activities that fit into your life and are rewarding for you, you can find healthy moments with long-term benefits. Men’s Health Week is the perfect moment to shape a better future for yourself and your family.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONGut and Butt Blastis a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane.

While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Workout Of the Day (WOD)This is a board based program, working TO the principles of H.I.I.T where you can come in and complete the workout in your own time.

What is H.I.I.T?High-intensity interval training is a training technique, which commands full effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by active recovery periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Lets LiftThis program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minute whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for every fitness level.

Mad GRITThis is a 30min program incorporating core, strength and cardio based exercise, ideal for total fitness development.

THUMP Boxingis a moderate to high intensity cardio boxing class. This class is specifically effective in defining the body’s musculature, while improving balance, flexibility, and co-ordination. The cardio component uses the body’s energy systems and improves your ability to use oxygen, helping you to work harder for longer and burn fat in the process.
