New technology paving the way to better roads

Isaac Regional Council’s road operations have received an efficiency boost with the purchase of three new graders equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.

The purpose built Komatsu GD655 Graders will be used to maintain unsealed roads throughout Isaac, joining the fleet in Clermont, Dysart and St Lawrence.

Isaac CEO Rod Ferguson said the GPS technology would improve efficiency and worker safety.

“The graders are equipped with KOMTRAX which is a GPS system that can keep track of where the graders are and what work they are doing,” he said.

“With our crews often working in isolation, the technology will improve driver safety allowing us to pinpoint exactly where the grader is, in case of emergency.

“The system will help Council to monitor fuel efficiency and will allow for precise calculation of job times.

“The advanced engine management system will notify Council if faults are present and identify exactly when the machine needs servicing.

“This will result in less down time due to proactive planned maintenance.”

Mr Ferguson said the new graders are part of plan to create a sustainable fleet.

“Council aims to upgrade aging machinery over the next three to five years.”

Ready to roll: Barry Macey testing out the driver’s seat in Isaac Regional Council’s new Komatsu GD655 Grader with Monique Moore, Paul Webber, Rohan Farimbella, Mitchell Crow (Komatsu), Bill Halls, Robert Winley, John Frater (Komatsu).

Health Matters - advice to help you live wellbought to you by Clermont MPHS

Let’s talk about…..Sleep Apnoea

Sleep Apnoea occurs when the walls of the throat come together during sleep and block the airway above the voice box.

Common symptoms of sleep apnoea include:• Snoring• Waking up tired• Daytime sleepiness• Acid reflux• Morning headaches

Left untreated, sleep apnoea can lead to hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke and/ or depression

There are many solutions and treatments for sleep apnoea including:• Lifestyle changes - weight

loss, decreasing alcohol consumption in the evening and an adjustment in the sleeping position

• Sleep Studies - there are sleep study clinics available in Mackay and Rockhampton

• Use of a nasal device or mouth guard

A visit to your GP is the first step if you have signs and symptoms of sleep apnoea and would like to discuss your options for treatment.

ADVICE TO HELP YOU LIVE WELL

Show stopping line up set for Mayor’s Charity BallA show stopping line up of entertainment is set for the Isaac Mayor’s Charity Ball on Saturday October 22, raising funds and awareness for youth suicide prevention.

Isaac Regional Charity Fund Director and Mayor Anne Baker said it will be an unforgettable night of fun and fundraising in Moranbah Town Square.

“The night under the stars will start with local identity and country rock artist Brooke Schubert.”

“Be emceed by Australian stand-up comedian and feature entertainer Des Dowling.”

“Our headline live entertainers Mezzanine, featuring lead vocals Rob Cookson and Klancie Keough, will perform chart toppers across the eras late into the night.”

Mayor Baker said tickets will be on sale soon for guests to dine, dance and make a difference by helping raise funds and community awareness to support youth suicide prevention.

“We know conversations can change communities. Your support through attendance or donations to the charity auction will play a major part in raising funds on the evening and awareness for this cause.” “Intentional self-harm is the leading cause of death for those aged 10-24,” she said.

“Funds raised will support prevention initiatives for this issue that devastates families and communities. “This is a chance to show your support for the very worthy cause of youth suicide prevention in the Isaac region.”

“The stylish black tie affair is being held under the night sky and will feature a sumptuous three course dinner, live music, prizes, charity auction and much more.”

Organisations interested in sponsoring this event can register their interest by contacting the Office of the Mayor, Rhyann Luck on 07 4846 3504 or email [email protected].

The Isaac Regional Charity Fund is a deductible gift recipient, which means it can receive tax-deductible gifts.

Guests will be entertained by the crowd favourite live band ‘Mezzanine’.

Well another week in beautiful Clermont. I can only say this as currently I am over at Moranbah relieving the boss there while he has a break for a couple of weeks. Not too much happening on the crime front with Clermont once again. There are issues with people securing their items especially in the rear of utilities and under their houses. It is great we live in a community where people trust each other but with new people coming to town every now and then it is always good to review what you do and how you do it. I am not talking siege type mentality but some common sense stuff like locking your vehicles, taking away expensive items such as fridges off the back of the Ute and so on. With the school holidays plenty happening on the highways especially families travelling. I hope the kids take lots to do when they travel so as to not annoy parents too much. With the election at the moment good luck to all the candidates for Saturday and hopefully the best people get the job. Clermont Police are monitoring the booths so any issues should be quickly dealt with. If you feel intimidated by any

pamphlet people or you believe they are inappropriate (not that you just don’t like them) then report them to the people at the actual polling booth.

The Clermont Station counter will be closed for Transport and Weapons Licencing between the 7th of July to the 15th of July. I will personally reopen counter for the 18th and 19th July days. There will be further disruptions then between 20th of July to 29th of July.

Please call the station first before coming into town or heading to the station to see if someone will be in to help you.

For police matters if the station is closed use 000 in emergencies only or the blue phone on the front door or call Policelink on 131444 or Mackay Police Communications on 4968 3444 (for non emergencies).

Anyway everybody have a great holiday and see you back in Clermont. The Sarge

What’s on in Clermont?

July 2016

A couple of doses of rain around the ridges of late so let’s hope it has fallen where it was needed. It’s been a busy time lately with the show, Clermont Pony Club Campdraft and then the Gold Cup. I managed to get to all of the events including the Pony Club Campdraft - up until that day I had no idea what took place at a campdraft if I am invited again next year I will definitely be wearing steel toe boots. I admit I showed my ignorance at the Gold Cup when I said to one small girl that her horses had lovely pink sparkly socks that matched her outfit exactly. She promptly told me that it wasn’t to match her but the socks slow down the horse in sand. Talk about getting put in your place.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions and these are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.

Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.

Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.

Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.

Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.

Bookings are essential please phone 4983 4746 or email [email protected] gov.au

Little lions love the library A special hello to St Joseph’s School’s Prep Class, who have been busy learning about the letter ‘L’.

The class visited the Clermont Library last week and enjoyed a tour of the library, reading about Maisy the Mouse visiting the library, singing about Old Macdonald’s Farm and making a lion mask. Lloyd Hornsby workshops As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, indigenous artist Lloyd Hornsby will be holding art workshops at Isaac Libraries and the Clermont Historical Centre.

Lloyd will be holding workshops at the Clermont Library on Monday, 4 July.

A boomerang workshop will be held from 10am to 11am, followed by a cap workshop from 2pm to 3pm.

Both workshops are for children aged six to 16 years and are free.

A general workshop for adults will be held from 6pm to 8pm and will cost $20 per participant.

A Master Class workshop for adults will be held at the Clermont Historical Centre on Saturday, 23 July from 10am to 12pm and will cost $20 per participant.

All workshops will be limited to 15 participants and payment must be made at time of booking. Fossicking licence clarification Recently the Library has had a lot of enquiries around purchasing fossicking licences. We would like to let the community know that the Clermont Library does not sell fossicking licences.

In Clermont, fossicking licences can be purchased online through the Queensland Government website at www.qld.gov.au/recreation/activities/fossicking/licences-permits/purchases/ or in store at the Clermont Caravan Park, Haig Street. Make a pet rock Making pet rocks is one of the holiday craft sessions being held at the Clermont Library during the school holidays.

The library’s holiday craft sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 11am to 12 noon, during the school holidays. Keep an eye on Council’s website for more details: www.isaac.qld.gov.au/library-programs.

Bookings are essential as each craft session is limited to 15 places.

First Five Forever The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.

Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child.

The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books.
