About us

As our global population and energy need continues to grow and our environment struggles to keep up with demand, it has become more important than ever for Washington State to continue to grow and become a national and international leader in today’s clean energy economy. We can shrink our dependence on fossil fuels and imported energy by boosting the importance of home-grown energy, stimulating the state and global economy and helping our clean energy sectors compete effectively in the global market.

On Dec 7, 1935, Washington Governor Clarence Martin poured the first concrete for the Grand Coulee Dam. A massive, new electricity-generating project, the Grand Coulee Dam thus became the symbol of Washington’s prominence as a national leader in clean technology. Over eight decades later, Washington’s clean energy economy continues to expand, spanning from hydroelectricity plants to aluminum production to airplane construction to data processing.

Former Governor Christine Gregoire focused much of her energy on improving and maintaining Washington’s ecology and high standards for clean energy technology. She brought Washington energy production home with the Elkhorn Decision in 1994 and adopted the 2009 California Clean Car Standards, dramatically reducing conventional air pollutants and carbon dioxide. Under her leadership, Washington passed the laws that made it a national leader in clean energy and climate protection policy. She worked tirelessly to protect Initiative 937 in order to continue the development of renewable energy and energy investments, and, putting her political reputation at stake, she issued an executive order to cap greenhouse gases, which established the current tone of energy production.Today, Washington is home to 30 major hydroelectric generating projects that, during abundant water years, meet more than 70 percent of the annual electricity needs of Washington constituents. Coupled with Washington’s status as one of the top 10 states for wind development, nearly one-fifth of all the renewable energy in the United States comes from Washington.

Continuing the legacy, current Governor Jay Inslee continues to make investing and supporting Washington’s Clean Technology Sector a priority. To meet the mandated 15% energy produced by renewable sources by 2020, we seek to increase, invest in, and support the continued research and development of clean technology and growth of the clean energy economy. Thus, it has become massively important that we maintain our competitiveness in the national and international clean energy race.
