CPS as an Instructional Tool

You can use CPS immediately without creating any questions. Verbal questions are “on the fly” questions that you can use to engage students. Use this feature to ask questions during a lesson in coordination with existing questions from a textbook, multimedia presentation, or made up on the spot.

Click Engage. The CPS Verbal Question window appears.

Engage>Lessons and Assessments

Optional: Change your session options. Include Session in Gradebook: Records grades in the Gradebook. Export to Question Grid: Creates Question Grid Report as an Excel file to display results. Max Points: Choose your Max Points. This field will default to 100. Class Options: Assign a pre-generated class to the lesson

CPS allows you to create and engage lessons, view student performance data, and track student performance data as grades. CPS saves the grades in the database where they can be retrieved through the Report > Gradebook tab. The Report > Gradebook tab also allows you to review your class roster, sort grades by assessment type, and view Gradebook reports.

CPS as an Assessment Tool

Students can respond to hardcopy worksheets and CPS homework, tests, quizzes, and other class work with their response pads. Use the FastGrade function from the Tool icon on the Lessons tab to create an answer template that coordinates with your existing paper in-class assignments, homework, quizzes or tests—without spending time typing in the questions. Then engage the FastGrade assessment and leave the grading to CPS.

3. Title your lesson 4. Click on the correct answer for each question

Prepare >Lessons & Assessments1. Click the New icon 2. Select the FastGrade Lesson

CPS as an Evaluation Tool

At the end of asking any question, verbal, FastGrade, or CPS lesson, you will see the Percent Correct for that question. As an instructor, you can look at this percentage and determine if you need to immediately go back and re-teach this topic.

The Cumulative % Correct tells you how the class is doing for the session. You may want to use this as a class incentive

80 100

CPS as a Review Tool

Use the Team Activities function to deliver team games called There it is! and Challenge to review previously studied topics. This is a great way to divide your class into teams and work on collaborative learning.

Prepare > Team Activities1. Click the New icon to setup a new Challenge Activity where you can pull answers from created lessons.

Engage > Team Activities- Click Engage icon to launch the Challenge activity created.- Click There It Is! to select the lesson to review.

Click Start to begin the competition.

Each team will be given a different question to work on and answer when ready. Scores will be shown for each group.

• Use CPS smoothly across your session. That is, don’t wait until the end of class then ask 10 questions very fast. Keep your students alert by continuously involving them throughout the session. • Vary the activities. For example, use the Team mode and divide up the class, then have them compete with each other. Show results and urge collaboration: the real world works best with teamwork. • Use the Cumulative Class Percent Correct as an incentive if they achieved a certain percentage.• Let the students create some Verbal questions in teams for delivery to the class over a specific topic. • Manage the class. For example, do not permit students to shout out, provide answers for others, or allow excessive celebration. It is your class and you set the rules for conduct independent of the instructional tools you use. Make sure this is a positive tool not a negative situation. • Manage your response pads. Have the students always retrieve and return the pads to the same place. A visual check is very easy based on the layout of the response pad carrying case.

CPS for PowerPoint adds a CPS toolbar to PowerPoint 2007 above or 2003 below so you can add interactive slides to a PowerPoint .

With the CPS software you import PowerPoint presentations into any folder or lesson in your CPS database to engage as a lesson.

All of the data is stored in the CPS database where you imported the PowerPoint file.
