Classroom 2.o is based on a simple idea.
We are all connected in a
human network
Activities that allow students and teachers to share knowledge by active 2 way
participation is Web2.0!
Teachers have been passing on information year after year in a chain. We know, we deliver you use/repeat.
Each year it gets a bitharder and a bit deeper.
This is Classroom 1.0.

What do you and your studentsuse to ‘get’ information fromthe internet in ICT classes?
Google? Wikipedia?Sites you give them?
Where are you getting yourinformation from?
This is great book about using Web2.0 tools in class. You could read it, or maybe read his Blog!
Or go listen to him and talk to him!
ICT is the problem!ICT (information communication technology) is a dated concept in a dated curriculum.
Brought into the curriculum to ensure kids are ‘computer literate’ - 1990s
Can type, can search Google, can print, can make a presentation ... simple stuff
Teachers and ICTA troubled past!
Teachers hated ICT!Slow beige computers, often broken
4 kids share a computer (Office based)
56k Modem - dial up access shared between all students - SLOW ... the world wide wait. - often ‘down’.
Floppy discs, limited space, basic projects and expectations due to the limits!
Teachers and PDLearn it yourself on the job ...
Operate basic Office - word docs and spreadsheets (issue task, mark task)
Surf the net - locate nugget of information to give to students
Too hard to learn ‘new programs’ - time, cost and access
Teacher AdoptionTo help make paper based documents that were photocopied and handed to kids
ICT use is often the SAME as paper based activities! - often a good ‘back up’ if the lesson died (no internet)
Forced to use to submit marks (spreadsheets)
Access board of studies and limited number of known PD resources...
Searching for information ‘breadcrumbs’
Web2.0Fast internet access (speed, number of PCs, broadband)
1000s of ‘online’ free/easy tools to read and write information
Multimedia is built into classroom technology!
Same ‘skills’ that they use at home!
Read/Write Web
Students are social, they use Read/Write tools such as YouTube, MySpace, Bebo and MSN Messenger
They use mobiles, use iPods, use Nintendo, play WOW online!
They like to participate - not just READ.
Put them at the centre! Most of our kids have MySpace or Bebo Accounts ... they PUBLISH information, not just read it
They create social networks intuitively
They use software easily (year 7 better than year 11!)
You don’t need to teach ‘skills’
Put them at the CentreAllow them to publish their work electronically
Boosts literacy and quality of work
Boosts effort and creates competition
Turbo charges the speed they learn, apply and demand more
Gives them REAL ownership!
Students use of ICT in school
Students spend most of their computer time doing the same things!
Searching
Cut and Pasting
Formatting
Outputting discs/paper
9IST did an online survey usingwww.surveymonkey.com
Why do they hate it!
They do it day in day out
Week in week out
Year in year out
In most subjects (students cited TAS, Creative Arts and PDHPE as doing something different - like swimming!).
At School At Home
Student Learning Experience
1.
Classroom 1.0 Classroom 2.0
The way in which they learn using Web 2.0 is more rewarding to them
2.
Just One Project
Why would you bother with
Classroom 2.0?
It is because you see the value of it to you
and your learners.
Because you are tired of battling students
poor behavior or levels of literacy.
But ... you don’t have the time to learn
about Classroom 2.0!
Its too hard/time consuming/nerdy/boring/not relevant
to the way I like to teach my subject ...
But ...
I teach my way and I don’t have the time, I have 5
period days.
(so do the kids)
Can you let them show you what they can do with
Web2.0 tools with thesetime and skill challenges?
(maybe)
Do you have Power Points?
Sick of loosing them on CDs and Flash Drives or find times when you
think ... if only I’d have brought that presentation?
Do you have Power Points?
Can you share a common powerpoint in your KLA?
(one person shares with 8!)
upload them once and forever!Share with the planet, you students or
just your KLA! ... fast and free!

Teaching 9 IST next year?
Everything you need for all topics is online,in sequence on Slideshare.net.
Make it once, share it often.www.slideshare.net/pmhs
Students embed your teaching!
Slideshare allows students to paste your presentations into their blogs. Makes it easy for
them to revise (great for HSC!)
No need to copy of the board! Use class time for deeper content and activities,
not copying and note taking!
www.slideshare.net/pmhs
Use other peoples Slideshares!
Sharing is Social. You will find hundreds of presentations others have created for FREE.
Educators LOVE Slideshare!
Students use Slideshareto give you assignments!
(no more collecting CDs and loading them! - one click assessments!)
Change the ‘end product’ from a Power Point to a Voice Thread?
www.voicethread.com
Write a daily journal entry to summarisetheir classroom learning on their own Blog?
www.wordpress.com
(they will do that at home or in the LC in
their own time)
Post text book exercises on THEIR blog for HOMEWORK.
Boosts literacy and reinforces learning.
www.wordpress.com
Record a video-response to a questionand post it to their Blog.
They can’t Google/Cut&Paste it!
iMovie www.FlickR.com
www.jumpcut.comwww.Photobucket.com
Design a survey and get people to completeit online, then put the results into a speadsheet
and publish that online.

Research a topic in groups. Post their findings as individuals to a Class Wiki.
Give each group a different question, then each student breaks that down into their own contribution (you can see who did what)
Collaboration and Knowledge sharing
www.wikispaces.comwww.wetpaint.com
Students can use several tools at the same time!
(You might not).
They will teach each other. Help each other. Motivate each other. They will
apply one tool they learned in Science to another situation in History.
This is a CRITICAL 21st Century Skillfor our students.
If they are ‘allowed’ to do it, then they will do it. If more teachers ‘allow’ it
and encourage it, we SHIFT the mindset towards using 21st Century
Learning and the WHOLE SCHOOL will see the positive effects it has.
Just one project - is a beginning.
Web2.0 is not an application ...
It’s a mindset.
