So how do you know if it is good or not?
![Page 13: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Accuracy, balance and fairness.
![Page 14: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Accuracy, balance and fairness.
But those things are all
subjectivesubjective, aren’t they?
![Page 15: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The principles of journalismprinciples of journalism:

![Page 16: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The principlesprinciples, part II:
• We provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
• We have a duty to make the significant interesting and relevant.
• We must be comprehensive.
• Journalists must have a conscience.
• Citizens are a vital part of journalism.
![Page 17: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Birds?
Is it good journalism?
![Page 18: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The Birds:
• Is it true? Has it been verified?• Is it helping citizens? Are the citizens
involved?• Is it independent? Are they monitoring
power?• Is it comprehensive?• Are they creating a public forum?• Did they make the significant interesting?• Did they have a conscience?
![Page 19: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
So, was it good journalism?
![Page 20: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Was the story …
• Sensational?
• Responsible?
• Balanced?
• Accurate?
• Beneficial to society?
• Newsworthy?
![Page 21: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Did the reporter interpret the story for you?
![Page 22: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Did we need to …
• See the reporter making the phone call?
• See the dark image where they said the guy was feeding the birds?
• Hear the wife say she wasn’t going to participate?
• See the bird poop on the news truck?
![Page 23: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Why did you laugh?
![Page 24: Class18 Broadcast Part Ii](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061306/54b3f8224a79598a438b4687/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
You need to be good consumers of the news.
Because that is what local news has devolved to: It makes you laughIt makes you laugh.

Things to think about:
• Can news be amusing and relevant at the same time?
• Do we need to see reporters in stories?
• Why isn’t there more good newsgood news on television?
• Why does the news (not just TV) focus Why does the news (not just TV) focus on tragedy and conflicton tragedy and conflict?
