July 14, 2000

Classmates,

It has been a pleasure putting together this 20-year reunion book. I hope you enjoy it.

One thing this project has made me realize, is that we all could probably do a better job of keeping in touch. I know I’m as guilty as anyone of losing touch, but with e-mail and ease of travel these days…there are fewer and fewer excuses. I know I don’t want to wait fi ve more years to catch up with what some of us are doing.

Something I’ve also realized (again), is that our class is pretty darn special. We may not keep in touch like we would hope, but I think we’d all agree that we created some very special memories of not only our time at LHS, but growing up in Lyons from childhood, like some of us did. I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything, and often tell people about how great our class was and how much we enjoy each other’s friendship. I think the fact that we’ve had two great reunions speaks to this fact. I know this weekend will be special, too.

I want to thank Diane for everything she’s done to help make this reunion a reality. She did a great job of keeping me on track and focused, and nothing would be happening this weekend if it weren’t for her. I also want to thank Donny. Lord knows we didn’t need the alcohol we drank the few times we met to discuss Saturday’s program, but it was fun catching up, nonetheless!

Best regards to everyone and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in fi ve years!

Scott

We have lived in Gun Barrel City for six years now. We are one hour southeast of Dallas, on Cedar Creek Lake. We enjoy boating and fi shing. Gun Barrel is a small town in the winter, but in the summer its population grows from all the lake houses in the area. Ted and I have two kids, Megan is 15 and Blake is 12. We also have two dogs and two cats.

Cameron Clarke(From the 10-year reunion book)Cameron Clarke died October 18, 1987 at Lyons, Kansas. Before Cameron died he was very candid about his life and his feelings. Cameron would want you to know his story.

Cameron was a victim of AIDS. In his fi nal days he wrote the following words. In a few sentences Cameron looked beyond his own plight to address an even deeper concern.

TRAGEDY by Cameron Clarke Having AIDS is often called a tragedy of our day; but a tragedy is a situation that destroys senslessly. Everyone says it’s a tragedy that people are dying; the tragedy is what AIDS has done to society. Out of fear, some people lash out, not caring who they hurt; out of fear people are hurthing and destroying the beauty of life. That’s a tragedy.

A green plan was sent to Cameron’s funeral from the Class of 1980. Cameron, I miss you.

Our home is now in Elizabeth, Colorado. Have been here for seven years. I have been married to Jeff Wise for 20 years this August. I am employed by RKMI in Denver as a project account for a large construction company, and also part owner in our company, Jeff’s Welding, Inc.

If we have spare time we love going golfi ng. I am still a pretty good golfer, and so if Jeff. We also enjoy going fi shing,. We have only had three vacations in the past 20 years. First, our honeymoon; second, to Lake Havasue, AZ where we played golf and socialized with friends a lot; and third, our best trip was a seven-day cruise to the Caribbean, where we swam with sting rays, and that was so much fun.

We did have a dog named Shadow and he was with us for 16 years, and he is very much missed.

I believe that the last reunion I was able to attend was our 10-year reunion. Since seeing most of you at that time, many changes have occurred in my life.

I lived in Alaska from 1989 until 1996, and I really do miss it, but I had to choose my family over that wonderful place. Unfortunately, there have been several recent tragedies in my life – my mother died in 1997, and my incredibly special brother, Tim (class of ’82) died last October in a plane crash north of Benton, Kansas. Unfortunately, my marriage ended as well.

There are happy times on the horizon, though. I’ve just purchased a home in Andover and I really like my job as an RN at the new Kansas Heart Hospital (North Webb in Wichita). Our family has lots of adorable nieces and nephews that keep things light-hearted. I’m looking forward to catching up with all of you.

Tony FligingerTony died this past spring and, like many of his classmates, I wasn’t aware of his death until several days after the obituary appeared in the Lyons Daily News. Tony and I had roomed together at Hutch Juco during our freshman year, but lost touch after that.

Upon learning of his death, I wondered if Tony knew that he had classmates from the Class of ‘80 who cared about him and wondered how he had been since high school and college. I was disappointed in myself for not doing a better job of keeping in touch with him. I was also disappointed in him for not doing the same with us. In light of Tony’s death, I decided that I didn’t want to lose track of classmates like so many of us had done with him, and like he did with us. I hope Tony knew there were friends “back home” who cared about him and will miss him. -- Scott Sewell

I still work for Underground Vaults and Storage, (ten years in August!) where I manage a division called Kansas Ovation Data Services. We do geophysical digital data pre-processing for the oil industry clients of Underground. I get to talk to people from all over the world, and I get to occasionally go to big conferences all over the country. That part is cool, but I’m pretty sure that my boss is the brother of the pointy haired boss from ‘Dilbert’, and that is not cool!

My oldest daughter Amanda, will be a senior, and Sarah will be a freshman. I’m very proud of both. It’s been the three of us for a while, with the exception of my boyfriend, Darren. Darren and I like to go on the river with our canoe. (we go summer/winter/spring/fall) We also play a lot of pool, take the Harley out, and I have a 1970 Opel GT that I love to do the car-show thing with!

Spouse: Gara LeeChildren: Lauren (13), Lindsay (11), Evan (3)Occupation: EngineerHobbies: Family activities, sports, music, reading

The last reunion we made was the 10th, I believe. Gara Lee and I will have our 19th anniversary this year and it really doesn’t seem that long. We have three wonderful daughters, which is where most of our time and energy goes. They are involved with many activities through school, church, and other organizations.

They were all able to go to Gara Lee’s reunion last year and thought that was fun. I did not get to last year’s and I’m looking forward to this year. I told the girls that they can expect a younger crowd this year!

We have lived in Iowa, Texas and Iowa once again since leaving Kansas. But we still have a lot of Wildcat (and a little Jayhawk) in us. Everyone, that is, except Evan. She is a Texan and you know how they can be. Gara Lee’s dad still farms in Lyons and we do enjoy coming back to the farm when we get the chance. Not much else to talk about ‘til July. See you then.

Spouse: DarlaOccupation: Engineer, ExxonMobilChildren: Brad (13), Holly (11)

Let me try to bring you up to date on what I’ve been up to since 1990. Back in 1990 we were living in Midland, TX. I was working as an engineer for Exxon at that time. We moved to Houston in 1996, and I work for ExxonMobil as an engineer in the production research company.

We really like it here in Houston. The summers are hot and muggy, but the rest of the year is fantastic. I can play golf year-round. (Actually, me playing golf is an insult to the game). We stay busy with our kids activities, church, and friends. Brad, our oldest, has fi nally gotten taller than dad - I’m reminded often. He stays busy with baseball and scouts. Holly, our youngest, keeps us busy with swimming, gymnastics, and Girl Scouts. Darla and I just try to keep up. We dolike to spend time together, shopping for antiques or bumming at the beach.

We usually get back to Lyons about once every other year around the holidays. Darla’s folks live in Bushton, and my folks still live in Lyons. My sister Diane and older brother Rick and their families also live in Lyons. My younger brother Mike and his family live in Salina, and my youngest brother Jeff and his family live in Hutchison. So Darla and I are the “black” sheep of the family.

The last four years, my job here in Houston has given me the opportunity to travel overseas. I’ve been to England a half-dozen times (London is great), Norway, France, and the Netherlands. Last year, I went on a business trip that took me to fi ve countries in fi ve days (Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, England, and Monte Carlo - what a rough life). But my favorite trip was a week-and-a-half I spent in Melbourne, Australia. Australia is great.

That’s all I can think of for now. Look forward to seeing you in July.

It’s hard to believe that we’re having yet another class reunion! Where does time go? Our family moved from Manhattan to Hays three years ago this coming August! The wind blows from Nebraska straight through to Texas! Like most of you, our family is busy going to one

another’s activities. We’re active serving God in our local church.

Although I don’t make as much time as I should, I still enjoy sewing, camping, crafts and reading. A big part of our time is making our family priority. We realize we’re in the twilight time with them. One of the many blessings/highlights is seeing your children blossom and nature into responsible young adults. One of the best trips was to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. We survived two and one half weeks together! Chris and I will soon celebrate 17 years of marriage.

Well, where to begin! First of all I can’t believe it has been 20 years! Phil and I are living in Lyons and working on remodeling our house, this summer I am supposed to be getting it painted. I might have it done by the time school starts back up, but with the way I procrastinate who knows for sure.

Our family is doing fi ne, the kids just get older and we get busier. Both of the boys are playing on traveling baseball teams (Wade is 12 and Dane is 9). That keeps us pretty busy and we still have our daughter, (Meg is 9) who plays softball and is beginning piano. She and Phil also want a horse, but Mom isn’t so sure!! Between baseball tournaments we try to enjoy our lives a little! We go camping and boating at Wilson Lake and just hang out!! With Wade going into 7th grade next year, it seems his social life is a lot busier than his parents!!

I sing in choir at Church and that’s my big social event each week! I am not working full time, I substitute teach for the school district. I do a lot of work at the High School, if you can imagine that! Phil works in Hutchinson for the Reno County Weed Department. Life is great in Lyons and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Wish I could be at the reunion, but my sisters, their families and my family are meeting in Colorado for a vacation!

Have fun and God Bless all of you!!!

With Brandon, 14, and Brooke, 12, work, sports and kids activities keep us pretty busy. We try to go snow skiing every spring break. The family really enjoys snow skiing and usually have a large group of friends that also go to the same ski area, so that makes it fun. We plan to go to Orlando, Florida in August before the kids get to old. We are anticipating a great time!

Spouse: JeffChildren: Jake (8), Baily (6)Occupation: Interiors business owner, The River LoftHobbies: Being outdoors, fi tness, interior decorating, “antiqueing,” traveling, spending time with friends and family.

Jeff and I have been married for almost 12 years now. Most people ask me what Jeff “doesn’t do” because he does so much. Jeff is an accomplished instrument rated pilot, so it’s been fun fl ying places, i.e., fl ying to California to see my sister, Stacy, and her family. We co-own Hidden Lakes Golf Course in Derby and Artistic Marble in Wichita. We’re also doing a couple of developments in the Wichita area with some partners. So, needless to say, Jeff stays very busy. In addition to all his business endeavors, Jeff also fi ddles with several different bands once in a while.

Speaking of fi ddling, Jeff taught our son, Jake, to fi ddle when Jake was fi ve. Jake’s had an exciting “music adventure” so far—he’s opened for country music stars Steve Warriner and Marty Stuart. He received a standing ovation from a big crowd at the Kansas Coliseum! He’s also opened for Charlie Daniels and gave Charlie his own backstage private concert to which Charlie replied, “keep on fi ddlin’!” In addition to fi ddling, Jake loves sports—he’s playing coach pitch baseball again this summer, and went to two basketball camps this past year. He also likes soccer and swimming. Jake joined 4-H this year and is looking forward to 4-H camp in June.

Our daughter, Bailey Mae, who is six, has just completed kindergarten. Wow, can’t believe our baby will be a fi rst grader! She’s a spitfi re! She loves gymnastics and dance, and she’s playing T-ball this summer. Bailey’s also an animal lover.

And then there’s me…ho, hum. After working at Pioneer Balloon for almost eight years in the distributor wholesale and international divisions, I decided to leave when Bailey was three weeks old to be home full-time with my kiddies while they were still small. It was the best decision I’ve ever made! In addition to being a full-time momma-san and a partner with Jeff, I opened an interiors business in 1986 called The River Loft. It’s a blast—I operate it out of our home, and I sell lots of neat furniture, lighting and accessories for home and offi ce. I don’t advertise—I love networking and selling mostly to friends and family.

Spouse: LynetteChildren: Hollyann (10), Sean (6), Derek (1)Occupation: Owner, Eclipse Communications (community development and media consulting)Hobbies: Music, working out, golf (when I fi nd time), traveling, being a “big kid” with my kids

At the time of our last reunion I was the assistant director of a statewide downtown development program here in Kansas, and in March of ’97 I took the director’s position of a similar program in Nebraska. To make a long story short, my position there was very political and in those kinds of positions you can be there one day, and gone the next! ‘nuff said…

So, last fall I moved back to Topeka and started Eclipse Communications, my own community development and media consulting fi rm. I’m also one of four principals in a fi rm called the Downtown Professionals Network, based out of Chicago. I travel all over the country trying to help revitalize small towns, or helping organizations or businesses enhance their relationship with the media. It’s really a lot of fun and I enjoy it very much.

I still play bass guitar and sing in a band (some things never change, do they!?). It’s a very fun band based here in Topeka. I play with a couple—she plays drums and sings and her husband plays guitar and also sings. The three of us all graduated from high school in ’80, and we’ve all got “regular” jobs, so we’re realistic about what we’re doing. We play just about any kind of music, but mostly enjoy playing the upbeat, fun stuff from the ‘70s through the ‘90s.

Hollyann, my oldest daughter, will be in fi fth grade next year. She’s so much like me and my sister Amy that it’s sort of scary. She loves to sing, perform, act, and take control! Sean will be in fi rst grade next year and

he’s just a little MiniMe. He looks a lot like I did when I was his age…skinny and tan! He loves sports, especially basketball and baseball. Derek turned one last March and was, well, a huge surprise! We thought we were done, but guess who was wrong! He’s a great little guy, and really looks up to his big brother and big sister.

Oops! I deleted something really important on my computer so I’ll be writing this out in my same ol’ sloppy handwriting I had when I was at LHS.

I’d really like to see everyone, but we are expecting our second child on July 10 and I will be busy with parental bonding and management of a really fun two-year-old boy. Just to make things interesting, we’ve also decided to move to Buena Vista, Colorado and have put our house on the market. The way things are going, we may be homeless before too long. Not to worry, though, both of our families have cabins in Colorado, so we may be displaced for a while. This might seem stressful, but it could be worse.

I have been teaching at Los Alamos High School for the past three years. If you recall the recent fi res, I know several families whose houses burned to the ground – they have stress!

So, this year I will be teaching English to surly teenagers. I’m not sure if my teaching style is comparable to Larry Kennedy or Elizabeth Ashlock, but I will say that I enjoy my work and most kids seem to get along with me. LuAnn and I have decided to make this move to a small town to try to simplify our lives. We have both been working in Los Alamos and the commute has burned us out. We could have moved up to Los Alamos, but most of the houses we could afford burned down and we just

decided that seven years in New Mexico was enough.

Now and then I miss Kansas and Lyons. We make it back to visit our extended families from time to time, but I enjoy living in the Rocky Mountains. We like to ski, raft and just recently I started racing my mountain bike. Life is good! I hope I can make it to the next reunion.

Hello “Classmates of 1980”! Is that all it’s been, just 20 years? With all the hair I’ve lost and weight I’ve gained, I was hoping it had been longer. (Ha! Ha!) I haven’t seen most of you since 1980 and I was lucky enough to see some of you at the 10 year reunion, thanks to the effort of LeAnn (Thompson) Toone. I missed the 15 year reunion, and I applaud Kim (Ritterhouse) Kepka for her efforts. I heard it was great!

I am very sad to say I have scheduling problems and will miss the 20 year reunion also. Thank you to Diane (Davidson) Heinly and Scott Sewell for caring so much and willing to organize the 20 year reunion. I can’t wait to get the book that Scott is organizing for the 20 year reunion. I am anxious to read how each and every one of you is doing. My sorrow is felt of learning the passing of Tony Flickinger. I am hoping that our class has only suffered two losses in 20 years. I have stayed in touch with several classmates and most of you probably think I am lost, but I am still around. Here is a little of what I have been up to.

As many of you know, I married in 1981 to another Lyons High School graduate and in 1982 Ashley was born from that marriage. She is a senior at Lyons High School this August and I believe she will be the fi rst child from a 1980 graduate to graduate from Lyons High School. After a fi ve year marriage and divorce, I ended up in Kansas City in 1987 and once again I married and divorced after another fi ve years. Well, a car needs oil every 3,000 or so miles and I guess my limit must be fi ve years. (Ha! Ha!)

During the 1980’s and 1990’s, I owned and operated Sports Card stores in Kansas City and traveled throughout the United States for almost ten years buying and selling Sports Cards and Sports Memorabilia. I have been lucky enough to have met over 10,000 professional athletes and coaches from MLB, the NFL, and the NBA during my over ten years in the business. My travels have taken me to 48 out of 50 states and I have attended many Super Bowls, World Series, All-Star Games, Playoffs and Hall of Fame inductions. I sold my Sports Card business late in 1996 and in 1997 I retired and moved to beautiful Phoenix, Arizona. Whoops! I left out the best part.

In January 1994 I met Michele Barham. When I met her she was a beautiful, young cheerleader for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. She cheered with them during the 1993 & 1994 seasons. In January of this year, we were together 6 years. After surviving the 5 year mark, I proposed marriage for the third time and we got married on December 19th, 1999. I know three marriages isn’t a world record, but I hope it’s a record for the “Class of 1980”. I guess I have just made up for the remaining bachelors in our class. (Ha’ Ha!)

After being bored with retirement I have been selling sports cards wholesale and selling through on-line auctions to pass the time. Michele has continued to be active in cheerleading. She cheered for the Phoenix Cardinals the fi rst year we were in the Valley of the Sun, and she is now a High School cheerleading coach at Deer Valley High School. This is her 3rd year coaching and her team has won Nationals two out of the last three years. You can see re-runs of her team on ESPN from the Disneyland competition.

The rest of the time we spend with our Boston terrier “Corky”, and when the vet will take him, we usually travel about once a month. We have taken several cruises the last couple of years and have two more cruises planned this year. I would like to organize a “Class of 1980” cruise someday.

I hope to be back in better communication with many of you in the future. Hope all is well with you and your families. Feet free to contact me at 1-623-869-6835 or email me at [email protected].

20 years???? It’s hard to believe that much time has passed since we “terrorized” good ole LHS It seems like just yesterday.

My family and I have kept very busy. When there was an option to list my hobbies, I couldn’t think of any except chasing kids, and attending sporting event after sporting event. I’ve retired, just in time for my kids to take over. We’re now the “old people” that coach. Ha! Ha!

We’ve had the opportunity to travel some, from South Carolina to Sacramento and in between, and see some old friends and family. We love having company at our house, too, so anytime anyone is in Great Bend, PLEASE stop and see us or give us a call. Everyone, take care and hope to see you all in fi ve more years!L to r, Kathy, Mitchel, Morgan, Pat, Jordan

A lot has happened to me in the 10 years since the last reunion. The most important, I have fi nally gotten married. (I think it is down to Paul and Brad as the remaining bachelors) Yes, I found someone that would put up with me. My wife Leigh and I met in early 1994. By the end of July 1995 we were married and on our way to Maui for our honeymoon. After two weeks of golfi ng and drinking, it was back to reality.

I am still living in the Atlanta area. Actually, we live in a suburb outside of Atlanta called Douglasville (great name for a town). Leigh is from the Atlanta area, born and raised. She has lived all of her life in Atlanta except for the 4 years she spent working “on the hill” in Washington, DC, and the 2 years she was a news producer in Alabama. She currently is a real estate agent and is staying very busy. We haven’t had any children to date, but are working on that as we both are ready to start a family.

I decided about four years that I was tired of the Landscape Architecture industry and wanted to do something else. I went back to school, got my MBA and changed careers. I am now in the middle of the technology world. I spent the last two years at a medical insurance company, managing their Information Technology Support Department.

About three months ago I was approached by another company to come to work for them and I accepted. I am the Director of Operations for a risk management company called Risk Labs. We have designed a software package that we install for corporations to help manage their company risk, plus we provide ongoing risk consulting services. We have been very successful to date as some of our clients are Compaq, The Disney Company, Nike, Levi Strauss, Media One, Long John Silvers and Microsoft. We are privately held at the present time, but are positioning ourselves to go IPO by the middle of next year.

In my spare time, golf is still at the top of the list of things to do. I still have a “hankering” to get out in the yard now and then to plant something, build something or cut something down. We have two dogs, a golden retriever and a lab, so playing with them is always a must. Leigh and I enjoy going to the beach, socializing with friends and traveling.
