Then: J.D. Hale Now: J.D. Hale

Ruth Mary Hall

Greetings to the Class of 1982! I’m sorry I won’t make it to the reunion this year, but I’m still on the other side of the world. My latest causes and activities follow… I encourage everyone attending the reunion to also buy a theater ticket. Take an extra day or so to drive 30 minutes up the road from Lewiston to Monmouth, which stages the Monmouth Shakespeare summer theater festival. An actress friend of mine performs there each year, but alas, I have missed the festival the last two years. Please support this terrific little theater, which does wonders on a small budget in a limited facility. I’m still a Foreign Service Officer, currently serving in Indonesia. Indonesia has 17% of the world’s bird species and 17% of the world’s active volcanoes. Visited the island of Krakatau twice, location of the massive explosion in 1883 which sent a shock wave around the world six times. Bird watching in the rainforest. Twenty different orchids growing in my garden in Jakarta. Fantastic tropical fruits including the mangosteen. (Queen Victoria offered a reward for anyone who could bring one back to England in edible condition.) Indonesia is on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and has suffered many disasters in recent years: two tsuna-mis, several volcanic eruptions, flooding, disease outbreaks, earthquakes and the worst industrial dis-aster in the nation’s history creating a mud volcano which is still flowing and damaging all in its path. Donors including the U.S. are helping with disaster warnings, preparation, mitigation and re-sponse. The sad thing about Indonesia is the rampant rainforest destruction of some of the largest and most diverse rainforests in the world, along with the species in them. Please support environmental causes helping to mitigate this disaster. I met Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas, who has been working with the orangutans of Borneo for decades. She notes that these largest of arboreal dwellers have lost 80% of their habitat in the last 20 years. A donation to www.organutan.org based in Los Angeles would help these amazing creatures – you can even “adopt” an orangutan orphan. Living here has given me a new perspective on the impact of western popular culture on the develop-ing world: beware the message of movies. “Finding Nemo” led to uncontrolled capture of the clown-fish in Indonesian reefs for export, many of which I heard subsequently went down toilets in the U.S. since “all drains lead to the sea.” It is hard to see a clownfish among the reefs here anymore. The coral reefs around Indonesia are also suffering terribly from cyanide and dynamite fishing. If you have sons and daughters interested in the Foreign Service, I would encourage them to spend time learning foreign languages (especially hard ones like Chinese and Arabic), taking immersion language courses and a summer abroad at a language school. Please be in touch at my new (mid-life) e-mail! [email protected] Have fun! Yours, Ruth Mary Hall

Tim Kane I see my time at Bates as a constellation of integrated experiences rather than a series of moments in time, so I'm going with some prose rather than responding to a set of questions. For me, Bates was about learning. Not just in the classroom, but learning from my relationships on campus and from my Bates experiences off-campus. Jetting off to Ecuador and Peru in my sopho-more year for Short Term ranks as a seminal moment in my own personal development and set me on a trajectory that shaped my life for ten years. Working summers as a tour guide at Bates and eventually landing my first professional job in the Bates admissions office also had a significant im-pact on who I am and where I ended up professionally. Academically, taking on an honors thesis was a critical step in preparing me for life as a graduate student at Columbia University. With all of its shortcomings and mild humiliations incurred upon me at the oral defense, it was a seminal ex-perience that set a standard for excellence in my own academic pursuits and demonstrated just how good my Bates education was. Of course, these experiences happened against a backdrop of "moments." Looking back 'lo those many years, I think about late-night conversations about life and love, fall walks at Thorncraig, rowdy evenings at The Goose before heading to Luigi's (or was it after being at Luigi's? Did we really eat that?), movies in Pettigrew, figuring out how those new-fangled computers worked at Co-ram, finding that perfect nook in the library, being a JA in Smith, trivia nights, pick-up basketball, yearbook meetings, and photographing sporting events for the News Bureau. Then there were the classroom moments with Gassman, Hoffman, Turlish, Fetter, Danforth, Kemper, Ward, Nelson, Harrison (MacDonald), Strong, Leaman, Gyi, Farnsworth, Muller and Freedman. They all had an impact on me in one way or another - the fact that I can remember their names so many years later is testament to that. Twenty-five years later, where did I land? Completely where I had hoped on a personal level, but not really where I expected professionally. As to the former, I have the wonderful loving family that I had always hoped to have. I know how lucky I really am. This year marks my 20th wedding anni-versary with my beautiful, incredible and talented spouse, Beth George '85, an attorney who finds the time to make daily organic meals, do her part to champion progressive causes and shine a bright light on the follies and crimes of our current administration. We live in Scarborough, Maine with our equally beautiful children, Emma, Spencer and Olivia, along with our feline companions, Smokey and Lubi. It's a wild, crazy and wonderful life (as many of you parents can attest), but we stay very grounded in who we are as a family. Now in my tenth year at Maine College of Art, I am Vice President for Advancement & College Relations. I am surrounded by artists, designers, and other creative types -- not exactly where I thought I'd be sitting 25 years after graduation. In 1982, I'd have wagered I'd either be sitting on top of an Andean loma (surrounded by llamas) or putting on my wingtips and filing papers in a court of law in 2007. But, things have a way of changing, don't they? Working in higher education and the arts has been rewarding and nourishing for me in many ways (including the opportunity to curate an art show this winter!). I love the way artists think about problems and see the world around them -- being around them has helped me see my job, my town and my life through different lenses as well. The learning continues, to be sure. I learn from my family, co-workers, and friends every day. I have no doubt, I'll learn a thing or two back at Bates this June.

Kristine Pearson (Kris)

On the positive side, the house is only 45 minutes away from my parents, across the border in New York, and provides great front row seats for the town’s annual Fourth of July parade. My sister, her husband and their three kids (Molly-6½, Abby-5, and Jack-3) are about equidistant in the other direction in upstate New York and we spend quite a bit of time together, including summer vacations on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesauke. I’ve had a great time playing soccer with the kids, teaching them to canoe, finding the most interesting books to read and toys to play with and taking lots of pictures. A number of friends also have small children, so I find myself acting as informal aunt to a whole pack of busy, intelligent youngsters. Having worked at various times at a private high school, in commercial radio (news mostly) and in nonprofit resource development, currently I’m Executive Director of a nonprofit loan fund serving rural community development organizations across the country. It’s been a great job that has enabled me to travel around the country and work with a host of talented and dedicated people. We’re in the midst of a merger that will expand services but substantially alter the essential nature of the organiza-tion, so changes are in store this year. I look forward to seeing what unfolds! My church just finished a merger and a move that kept the entire congregation busy and has provided much in the way of blessings. It’s really been fun and I’m now attending church with a couple of women that I knew when we were all children in western New York. I spend quite a bit of time hiking with my young Labrador Retriever, Éclair, who also keeps me com-pany at the office and is a great favorite with everyone. Her latest passion is finding (and eating) the bait fish the ice fisherman dump after a day on the lake. The bookgroup I moderate twice a month is in its tenth year and we have more than forty members. My half hour commute to work provides ample time to enjoy books on tape and, combined with “fun” reading, one way or another I’m averaging a bit over a book a week . While I can’t say there’s never a dull moment (consider the hours spent chipping away at ice dams on the roof last week), I do find that life in general is generally fun and certainly busy – although never too busy to welcome any Batesies passing through! Looking forward to seeing everyone in June!

Sociology and Rhetoric major Lived in Parker, Cheney, and Small (RC in Che-ney and Small) Played soccer and softball Since Bates I’ve lived in Glen Arbor, Michigan, and Canton, New York before settling (after a fashion) in the Rutland, Vermont area. After years of happily renting a little house by a little lake in the middle of nowhere, last year I became the somewhat reluctant owner of a 150 year old house in historic East Poultney and now seem to spend an inordinate amount of time mowing, shoveling, and doing a thousand other tasks related to owning a big old house.

Yes, life is a bit different for me now than it was 25 years ago. God used my time at Bates to shape me and to open my eyes. The depths of my depravity came out during sophomore year, but through my Junior Year Abroad experience in Germany, I saw how He works all things for good, making me who I am today. My family and livestock are an incredible blessing to me. Though my vocational path has been bumpy and not what I originally envisioned, I’m thankful for Bates and all I learned there.

Class of 1982’s 25th Reunion

Cole Tammien

Here I am: Right in the middle of Life! College reunion -- in particular, writing this sort of personal update -- produces a strange reflex action. Merely by imagining a reunion, you see yourself, and your life, from an alternate vantage point. It’s a judgmental process. It conjures chuckles, or causes you to shake your head in the car, lost in the thought. And it brings pangs of mortality. Under the influ-ence of a 25th reunion, thoughts play funny games with time. (That's what this is, right? 25

th? I've,

uh, stopped counting.) The result spits out like a strip of snapshots from a photo-booth. Before and After. Then and Now. Auto-focus self-assessment. Bing! I'm outside looking back -- what do I see? How to frame this portrait? I think it is framed like this: I have been married to Deborah since August 2004. We live in Freeport, on 7 acres at the end of the road. She has a nearly-photographic memory but can never find her glasses. She has a huge heart. She has two big strong boys from what we like to call 'her previous administration.' Aaron and Ben are at university in Canada. Meanwhile, my two children live with their mom in Brunswick, and spend just about half their time with us. Phoebe is 14, beautiful and smart, and a joy to be with. Connor will be 13 by the time you read this. He still hugs me in public. Life is good. I am losing my hair. Plenty left to comb, but what is left is unruly, so I am ambivalent about its tenancy. Full-on bald looks pretty good to me. I have already lost most of my mind (I blame Senior year). Time spent with D's boys or my kids is mostly spent acting like an 18-to-20 year-old. It's not good for the furniture. But there is often a lot of laughter, and I am pleased that my kids have difficulty explaining me to friends. They invite friends to my house, just so they can say "See?" I risk an infarction every so often playing old-man-basketball at the local middle school. For short stretches I feel omnipotent and relaxed. I might be a better ball player now than...when I had hair. By day I am the finest manipulator of spreadsheets on these shores. I spend my days doing just that for an electrical wholesaler with offices in New England and New York. It is challenging and sometimes satisfying. It pays the bills, although it does not afford me all things. Having spent my first 18 employed years in film and video production -- by design -- and the last several years in a back office position -- quite by chance -- I am confused about where to go next. (And yes: I believe this leads to unruly hair.) By night I mostly obsess over my collection of records (we can say “records,” can’t we?) I have accumulated about 3000 of them. My house is home to the collections of friends, relatives and neighbors, all sorted, bagged, cataloged and enveloped into the Greater Collection. Although I've always taken the physical well-being of my records very seriously, the fascination with musicology and the desire to create an intentional, thoughtful collection of music, are recent and welcome developments in this mania. All my life I've written letters to editors which ended up in the woodstove. Lately, a few have ended up in the mail. My divorce, and the troop of intelligent, above-average children who move in and out of our house are probably what have caused me to become Conservative, at least in a paternal and cultural sense. I no longer like or understand "Conservative" and "Liberal" as political or religious assignments. I think that at some point in our lives, most of us have been told that we would stop worrying about what other people think of us, if we knew how infrequently they actually did think of us. Good advice. But at the same time, if my room-mates Wayne, Jeffrey, Stanley, and Nick knew how often I thought of them, or if Colleen, Lizzie, Dave the Swinger, Clark, Lisa, Nick V. or Julie -- frankly a whole host of you -- knew how often I think of you, and how fondly...it would be good. I’m glad you-all are in my pictures.
