A Look Back...“Colleges are just like people. They must have eyes to see, minds to think, and

hands with which to work. From where does a college get these things? From its

organizations! The organizations here on campus are the eyes, the heart, and the

mind of East Carolina College. Each one has its own particular function and place in

campus life. East Carolina can be justly proud of the splendid record set forth by its

organizations.” – Buccaneer, 1960

What wonderful words to describe the many clubs and activities available to ECC

students during the 1959-1960 academic year. But truly, it is the people of those

organizations—YOU—the former students of East Carolina—who have made the

University what she is today. It’s been 50 years since your graduation from East Carolina,

yet you are still an integral part of our university’s past, present, and future. It is through

our alumni that East Carolina has remained a beacon in the East, guiding young minds on

the same adventure of self-discovery that you experienced 50 years ago.

Today, ECU boasts a record enrollment of 27,816 students, 106 bachelor’s degree

programs, 74 master’s degree programs, four specialist degree programs, one first-

profession MD program, and 17 doctoral programs in our professional colleges and

schools, the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, and the Brody School of

Medicine.

It is with pleasure that the East Carolina Alumni Association give you, our golden

Class of 1960, this memory book to

commemorate your 50th Class Reunion.

Thank you for your years of service and

dedication to your alma mater. This book

contains the memories of many of your

1960 classmates. We hope you enjoy

“catching up” with your fellow 1960

Pirates!
