I retired from Liberty Mutual and Bob from the PNSY. Our three off spring each live within 7 miles from us. No grand kids so far! Obituary - GREENLAND, N.H. - Joanne (Barnes) Tobey, 77, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020, with her children lovingly by her side. Joanne was born on Aug. 22, 1942, daughter of Aubrey (Gilchrest) Downs and John W. Downs of Portsmouth, N.H. She is survived by her daughter Kelly Tobey, of Portsmouth, N.H., her son John Tobey and wife Tiffany (Roggenkamp) Tobey of Portsmouth, N.H., her son Matthew Tobey of Greenland, N.H., her brother Dennis Barnes and sister-in-law Pat Barnes of York, Maine, her sister-in-law Patsy Barnes of Stratham, N.H., her brother-in-law Richard Thorp of Kittery, Maine and several adored cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and life-long friends. Joanne is predeceased by her beloved husband Robert L. Tobey, her brother Terry Barnes of Stratham, N.H., sister Janice Thorp of Kittery, Maine, sister Judith Larmie and brother-in-law George Larmie of Middleton, N.H. Joanne graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1960. While she had occupations outside of the home, she always said that her favorite role was being a mother. She loved children, affectionately known as "Aunt Dodo" to her nieces and nephews. She loved to garden. When she was unable to continue that passion, she developed a new one with genealogy. She cherished family and her research expanded her connections further. She often told stories of being at the farm with her cousins and loved sharing tales. She had an artistic flair with an impressively organized craft room. She found serenity at the beach with the sun on her face, her feet in the sand and the ocean as her landscape. She had a great sense of humor, a beautiful personality and a thoughtful and compassionate heart. In spite of health conditions, her disposition remained sunny and her laughter and quick wit filled us with happiness. The family would like to thank Pathways and Beacon Hospice for the care and kindness they provided. It was a gift that she was able to live out the rest of her days in the home she loved with family by her side. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dodge, George Date of Death: Jul 4, 2018 Obituary George ""Buzzy"" Augustus Dodge III One of a kind George Augustus Dodge III, aka ""Buzzy,"" 76, a longtime Portsmouth resident, died on Wednesday, July 4th of complications of cancer-- though some say it was stubbornness. He was known for his caustic wit, strong opinions, frugality, generosity, goodheart and myriad interests. Buzzy went out of his way to help friends. As one reminisced: ""If you want Buzzy's help with something, don't ask for it. Instead, tell him that the task is impossible, can't be done, that you're going to give up. If he doesn't know how to do it immediately, he'll think about it for a few days, then come back with a solution, ready to help."" Born in Cambridge, Mass., in 1942 to Martha Nichols Dodge and George (Gus) Augustus Dodge II, Buzzy was the eldest of seven brothers. The family moved to Portsmouth in the early 1950's following his physician father's medical career. Insatiably curious growing up, Buzzy once tied a match to a fishing line and lowered it into an old empty underground gas tank to see what would happen. He looked slightly sunburned for the rest of his life. During college one summer he smoke-jumped in Alaska to fight tundra fires for the BLM. Another summer, he salvaged metal from a B-52 wreck on Elephant Mountain, Maine. Originally a classics major, he graduated from Middlebury College with a degree in biochemistry and worked in research in Boston. He met his wife Erica at Theatre-by-the-Sea amid the tumult of the mid to late 1960's and the fight to preserve the built environment in Portsmouth's oldest areas. They were married for nearly half a century. He and Erica together spent decades preserving and restoring Portsmouth's older homes. Buzzy was fascinated by the technology of craft traditions. He learned how to make old-time plaster from scratch. He mastered braced-frame construction, joinery, and appropriate to the period brick and stone masonry among other skills. He did his work with great care and attention to historic accuracy, using antique hand tools. He bemoaned the systematic gutting of old buildings because he felt it robbed them of their character and history. He and Erica also had many adventures overseas, where Erica had spent part of her childhood. During one ""sabbatical"" from their Portsmouth labors, they got jobs teaching high school at the Colegio Internacional de Caracas in Venezuela, where Buzzy taught physics and chemistry. He always lamented his lack of fluency in a modern second language and worked at Spanish and French while spending extended periods in Europe sometimes on a shoestring budget. Buzzy never retired. He was restoring part of an old building in Malaga, Spain until the end. A friend says he was engaged in life forever. He is preceded by his brothers Laurie Nichols Dodge and David Michael Dodge. He leaves his wife Erica, his son Ethan, and his grandsons Nathan and Langley, as well as brothers Mark Stickney Dodge of Milbridge, ME, Frank Sumner Dodge of Berlin, Germany, John Hovey Dodge of Naples, FL, Peter Christian Dodge of Jonesport, ME, and aunt Barbara N. Blaisdell of Naples, FL. The family plans a wild party sometime somewhere.

Dunham, Jr, Frank Date of Death: Nov 5, 2006 The Washington Post;November 5, 2006 by Jerry Markon Obituary Frank W. Dunham Jr., 64, who fought for Zacarias Moussaoui and other well-known terrorism suspects as the first federal public defender in Alexandria, died Nov. 3 of brain cancer at his Alexandria home. A longtime Northern Virginia lawyer and former prosecutor, Mr. Dunham created the public defender's office virtually by himself in 2001. One of his first clients was Moussaoui, the only person charged in a U.S. courtroom in connection with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In the aftermath of Sept. 11, Mr. Dunham zealously battled the government on behalf of an al-Qaeda member who despised his own attorneys. Moussaoui eventually pleaded guilty, but only after Mr. Dunham and his team tied the case up in the courts for several years. Edward B. MacMahon Jr., one of Mr. Dunham's co-counsels, said, "His work on the Moussaoui case was outstanding" but was overshadowed by what he did for "enemy combatant" Yaser Esam Hamdi.

Page 12: PHS 1960 Memory Book Wednesday August 18, 2021 Class

Mr. Dunham personally argued before the U.S. Supreme Court the case of Hamdi, a U.S. citizen held as a combatant by the military. That produced an important decision that upheld the government's power to detain Hamdi but said he could challenge that detention in U.S. courts. Hamdi was released and flown to Saudi Arabia. "The Hamdi case was, in my judgment, one of the greatest accomplishments ever by an American attorney," said MacMahon, who recalled how Mr. Dunham learned from a newspaper that Hamdi had been detained without charge. "He said, 'That's just wrong -- you can't do that to an American citizen.' " The high-profile cases of the past few years capped a colorful legal career in which Mr. Dunham prosecuted espionage and fraud defendants and represented clients including W. Mark Felt, the confidential source known as Deep Throat, who was key to The Washington Post's coverage of the Watergate scandal. Felt, the FBI's second-ranking official at the time of the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate, went on trial in 1980 with another former FBI official. They were charged with illegally authorizing government agents to break into homes without warrants in search of anti-Vietnam War bombing suspects. In one of history's strange footnotes, Mr. Dunham called former president Richard M. Nixon to testify on behalf of Felt, the man who helped force Nixon's resignation. "The story Frank always told is that the jury turned its back on Nixon," said Michael Nachmanoff, the acting federal public defender in Alexandria. Nachmanoff was selected in August to be Mr. Dunham's replacement, pending security clearances. Mr. Dunham retired in November 2005, citing the effects of his illness and a desire to spend more time with his family. It is his role as public defender that is perhaps Mr. Dunham's greatest legacy, lawyers said. The office, which also has divisions in Richmond and Norfolk, represents indigent defendants and now handles about 60 percent of the cases at the busy Alexandria federal courthouse, which serves Northern Virginia. "He built it into what I would consider a highly respected office. It was all his doing," said J. Frederick Sinclair, an Alexandria lawyer who prosecuted cases with Mr. Dunham in the 1970s. Sinclair called him "a bulldog of an attorney, a true warrior. He would dig into a case and wouldn't let go." In a 2004 interview, Mr. Dunham called his work as public defender some of "the most exciting years I've had practicing law." Mr. Dunham, a gregarious man with a self-effacing sense of humor, was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Arlington. He was a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins, sitting in the same upper-deck seat at all home games. "That was his only vice, those Redskins games," said his wife of 40 years, Elinor "Ellie" Dunham. Mr. Dunham graduated from Portmouth, NH High School in 1960 and from Virginia Tech in 1964 with a degree in naval architecture. He then attended law school at Catholic University, becoming the first law student to graduate first in his class while attending school at night. After clerking for a federal judge, Mr. Dunham was an assistant U.S. attorney in Alexandria from 1971 to 1978, rising to the No. 2 position in the office. He then went into private practice as a white-collar defense lawyer in Arlington before taking the public defender's job. Even as he worked long hours -- and then often labored into the night at his kitchen table, frequently listening to a Baltimore Orioles game -- Mr. Dunham never forgot his family. "When I played baseball in college, he was at almost every game," said a son, John "Jody" Dunham. Only later did Jody Dunham learn that at the time, his father was representing former FBI agent Earl Edwin Pitts, who would later plead guilty to spying for Moscow. "You didn't even realize how busy he was in his professional life. You didn't feel it at all," Jody Dunham said. In addition to his wife, of Alexandria and his son, of Richmond, survivors include another son, Frank III "Chip" Dunham of Rockville; a brother; and four grandchildren.

James Herbert Erickson HAMPTON - James Herbert Erickson, 61, of 19 Portsmouth Ave., died suddenly on Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at his home, following a sudden illness. He was born on Oct. 17, 1942, in Portsmouth, son of the late Herbert H. and Rosilda Mary Blanche (Gosselin) Erickson. Educated in the local schools, he was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1960. He continued his education at the University of New Hampshire, majoring in languages. His studies complemented his talents beautifully, as he eventually spoke seven languages - Latin, Spanish, French, English, Mandarin Chinese, Swedish and German. Armed with a 4.0 grade-point average, he moved out to San Francisco for a short stay to expand his horizons and bask in his love of music. There, he explored his creative side, making his living singing and playing drums. Playing both the bongos and congas, he would entertain nightly in clubs throughout the Bay area. In 1961, he made his way back to New Hampshire, enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served his country from 1961 to 1963, stationed predominantly in Pensacola, Fla., using his proficiency in languages to teach others in the service. On Dec. 31, 1973, he married Betty Jean Lozier. Both always held fond memories of their wedding day and the warm, intimate reception that followed at his parent’s home, in Portsmouth. They began their life together in Portsmouth and eventually moved to Concord, where Mr. Erickson was employed by the Rumford Press Printing Company for several years. There, he ran the presses for 10 years and eventually became the head of the union. Always known to have a strong work ethic, he also had a keen ability to prioritize his life. He realized the importance of family and always made himself available, whether it was to his ailing parents, his wife or their two children, Jon and Johanna. His children were his joy and he always found the time to share in their successes, whether attending a school play, a concert or an extra-curricular afternoon sporting event. In 1982, he moved his family back to the Seacoast, settling in Hampton. A lifelong resident of the Seacoast, he was employed briefly by the Yankee Press Company, in Seabrook. He maintained this position until he started at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he was employed as an apprentice painter. For the past 20 years, he had been employed by the United States Postal Service, at Heritage Avenue in Portsmouth, as a mail handler. Throughout his life, Mr. Erickson nurtured an artistic, inquisitive nature. An accomplished and published poet, his pieces, specifically a work titled “Death,” have appeared in the World Poetry Anthology and the American Poetry Anthology. He had also written a book, “Twilight in the Land of Nod.” He graced his family with special treasures, periodically writing them songs. He once wrote a Christmas song for his children, a memorable jingle recalled each holiday season. For his wife, the song, “Shoe Shop Girl,” was pleasing to her ear and kept her entertained. These artistic expressions live on and are mementos of a dear man. Always fascinated by other cultures and traditions, he had a penchant for travel, which brought him to such spots as Europe, Africa, Mexico and across America. Particular passions were mountain climbing and hiking. It was a great source of pride that he successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, in Africa. He also hiked regularly throughout New England and beyond. He always wanted to assist, where he saw a need. Opting to help through an extension of the hiking that he loved, he made trail maps for disabled children. Through his writing, he longed to help his fellow man and to set an example for his own children. Mr. Erickson had a very special bond with each member of his family. His only daughter recently married, and he found great contentment and joy in seeing her happy and settled. His wife was a constant source of support and love. During their life together, they faced the extremes of joy and sadness, and always looked to each other to find the solace and peace that they so needed. Together, they faced the untimely death of their only son, Jon, working as a family, to move through feelings of tremendous despair. After this tragic loss, Mr. Erickson also found great comfort in what had always fed his soul, throwing himself into his hobbies and enjoyments. He always kept his only son in the forefront, creating personal tributes. Always fond of the beach and the ocean, he began gathering rocks from Hampton Beach and hand-painting comforting and inspirational messages on them, to his son, Jon. While hiking, he would dot his trail with these little remembrances, an intimate communication between father and son. He never got over the loss of his son, yet he managed to find little comforts to assuage the pain. Hiking in the vast outdoors gave him tremendous perspective. The peaceful grandeur of nature soothed him, as did the sight of the Monarch butterfly. This mariposa, so gentle, so beautiful, and so free; everything he dreamed for his son. He enjoyed such hobbies like fishing, swimming in the ocean and motorcycling. He was very proud of having motorcycled across the country. He greatly enjoyed relaxing with his DVDs, the television, his computer or a favorite foreign film. Other important players in the family dynamic were his dog, Princess, and his cat, Nestle. He enjoyed walking Princess

Page 16: PHS 1960 Memory Book Wednesday August 18, 2021 Class

daily, ever at his side whether atop a mountain or along the shore. Princess will be in attendance during the calling hours at the funeral home. Always able to find time to feed his soul, the free spirit, artist in him blossomed throughout his life. The spark was lighted by his incredible intellect and inquisitive nature. The flame was fed through his writing, his travels, his adventurousness and, above all, the support of those he loved. He brought much light to the lives of those around him, and this warm glow will not soon fade. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Betty J. (Lozier), of Hampton; his daughter, Johanna Rachel Erickson and husband Mohab Mohamed Sharabia of Portsmouth; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.. He was predeceased by his son, Jon Christopher Erickson, who died July 14, 1995, and his brother, James Gosselin Erickson.

Harris, Priscilla [Whitehouse] Date of Death: February 10, 2022 Obituary Priscilla Whitehouse Portsmouth - Portsmouth – Priscilla "Gail" Whitehouse, 80, of Portsmouth suddenly passed away on Thursday, February 10 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 27, 1941 to Bevuell and Pauline (Stenzil) Harris of New Castle. Gail attended and graduated from Portsmouth High School and is a member of the class of 1960. Gail's passions in life were taking care of her children and later in life spoiling her grandkids. She was the rock of the family, the person everyone could go to. Often working two jobs to make sure the kids were taken care of, she was considered an extremely hard worker. Her grandkids brought her joy and spoiling them brought even more joy. If someone was sick, there was nothing like a "Gail/Nauni Goodie bag" to get you on the mend. If young enough, they contained some of their favorite snacks/candy and a toy; some of those bags have been known to extend outside the immediate family. Another passion was shopping whether it be at Kohl's, TJ's, Marshalls, or the Christmas Tree Shoppe, if there was a bargain, Gail was going to

find it! The family will remember and cherish so many memories spent in New Castle, whether it was in the summer and spent all day at the beach or visiting Grammy (Gigi) and Grampy's house, oftentimes siblings or cousins would try and be the first to call and ask if they could spend the night, we all knew how spoiled we would be! Gail touched many lives and all that knew her, loved her, and will miss her dearly. Gail is survived by her children Mark Whitehouse of North Hampton, Melissa Roberts (Richard) of Wethersfield, CT, and Marcie Anderson of Portsmouth; Grandkids, Amelia and Thomas Roberts, Alex and Olivia Anderson, and Courtney and Haley Whitehouse; Sisters, Suzanne York of Lorain Ohio, Sandra Pace (Brandt) of Greenland. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Services: A time of a memorial visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 12 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to NH Make A Wish, Maine Children's Cancer Program, or Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Jones, Foster Date of Death: August 26, 1975 Foster Tarleton Jones, age 75, was surrounded by his family when he passed away on August 26, 2017 at his home in Alton, New Hampshire. Foster grew up in New Castle, NH and delighted in telling (and retelling!) stories of his happy childhood on the island. He attended Portsmouth High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Soil and Water Science at the University of New Hampshire. It was at UNH, in Dan Valenza’s woodworking classes, where Foster discovered his passion for working with wood. After college, he taught math and science at Milton Junior High School. He then worked for his father Robert Jones doing carpentry in Portsmouth and New Castle. He and several other artisans had a group shop on Bow Street in Portsmouth. He built masts for boatbuilders. Foster and a partner began “Housesmith’s”, a post and beam home building company in York, Maine. He went on to work by himself for several years, building houses and making furniture and cabinets. His skilled touch can be found in homes, restaurants, bars and theaters in the Seacoast area. In 1985, Foster and his brother’s in law started “Maine Coast Builders” in York, Maine. In 1995, he followed his heart and built a work shop at his home in North Berwick, Maine, where he worked for 20 years, until he moved his shop and family to Alton, New Hampshire. He is survived by his wife of 30 years: Rhona (Barden) Jones and his sons: Eyan Jones of Limerick, Maine and Arik Jones of Rye, NH, and his daughter Ruby Jones of Alton, NH. Foster loved his occupation. He loved New New Castle. He loved the natural world. He loved books. He loved music. He loved astronomy. He loved a challenge. He loved what was to be discovered in the universe. He loved his three children and he loved his three wives. Foster was a kind, humble and honorable man. He was rare in his contentment and fulfillment in life. He was eager to help others and generous with his knowledge of his trade. There will be a memorial gathering for Foster on the New Castle Commons on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 10am. Cremation care by Peaslee Alton Funeral Home.

LaChance, George Date of Death: May, 2015 Following our graduation in 1960, I enlisted in the navy. In December of that year, classmate Joan Semprini and I were married. She is the mother of our four daughters, Nicole, Danielle, Stephanie and Antoinette. In 1964, discharges were held up for a year and my ship was deployed to Tonkin Gulf/Vietnam. Following an Honorable Discharge 1965, we moved back to Portsmouth. I did some lobstering with my father in law and also worked for Sylvania and GE. Not being content, I returned to the sea as a Merchant Seaman for five years. This didn't help a failing marriage that led to a divorce in 1973. I returned to school and training for respiratory therapy from 1973-1975. Successfully completed my boards/exam at Towson State, in MD, 1975. Pursued a career in RT until 2003 retirement. I had been living/working in FL since 1988. In 2007 Patricia (Wood) and I found each other in "Classmates" and began what turned out to be a relationship that led to our marriage in 2008. We enjoy traveling and B&B's along the Maine coast and 'hotel it' in FL. We hope to expand our travels in the future, God willing. In addition to my children, Patty has five plus four step children. Grandchildren are many! We see most of them fairly often. We are both trying to loose pounds before the 50th that we look forward to attending. 11/2012 We enjoyed the 50th and seeing old friends again. Now living in MA for nearly five years, I'm starting to feel like a New Englander again! 3/2014 Now nearly six years married to Patty, we live in Pepperell, MA, just south of Nashua. We get

Page 28: PHS 1960 Memory Book Wednesday August 18, 2021 Class

to Portsmouth on quite a few occasions. Keep in touch with some of our classmates including brother Dave and his wife of many years, Vicky. What has become a gathering place for a lot of old friends from class of sixty, is the Bing Bilodeau ranch in Greenland, especially during the summer months. Patty attempts to dine once a month with the ladies of the class of sixty, who meet more often than not at the Dinnerhorn. More and more frequently, we are noticing the obituaries of classmates and friends, to be expected, I guess, at our ages. Patty & I have traveled quite a bit throughout New England during the last several years, primarily along the Maine Coast near Camden and the Cape and also Cape Ann in MA. We also visit Florida during the winter months. We returned from FL this year, just in time for several snow storms, after our flight from Ft Myers was held up for four days due to another snow storm in MA! Its been a lovely winter!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

O'Brien, Bonnie Date of Death: March 13, 2020 After working for 40 years in public libraries I retired the end of 2004. I missed the people I worked with but not the crazy budget situations. Four months to the day later I fell on my front walk and killed the nerves that run from your knee to your hip and let's you stand, walk. I was in a wheelchair for 16 months. Since then I have been sing a rolling walker and doing lots of the things I enjoy. I have attended W.I.S.E. classes for seniors at Assumption College, volunteer in the library at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, serve on the Board of Directors of the YWCA of Central Mass, and am active in the Shrewsbury Garden Club and the Shrewsbury Historical Society. I am also a member of the Shrewsbury Fragrant Garden, which is an outgrowth of the Shrewsbury Garden Club, and we are in the process of establishing a fragrant garden for the visually impaired. It is going to be located at a new veterans facility in Shrewsbury. My sister Bev and I usually go to Wisconsin every summer to visit Bette and Rick, their daughter Lisa and her husband Bob and their three gurls. Our nephew Brent comes to Massachusetts and New Hampshire every summer with Dina, his wife, and their beautiful daughter Mira. Life is good! I am blessed with many wonderful friends and am most thankful for all I am able to do. I must say, working in my gardens, using the walker, is very high on my list. Obituary Bonnie L. O’Brien, 77, longtime Shrewsbury resident, passed away unexpectedly on Friday March 13, 2020. Bonnie was born on June 30, 1942, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to the late William T. and Louise (Tobey) O’Brien. Her life-long love affair with libraries began when she was a young girl. Bonnie was an avid reader. In high school, she started as a volunteer and then was hired to work at the Portsmouth Public Library. Upon graduation from high school, she attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated in 1965. She went on to attend Drexel University and earned her Masters degree in Library Science. Upon graduation in 1967, with 10 – 12 job offers, she said yes to a position at the Worcester Public Library, allowing her a chance to begin her career and be near her family. In less than a year, she was the head of Children’s Services and the Bookmobile. In 1978 Bonnie was appointed the Director of the Shrewsbury Public Library. She was immediately involved with the building project that remodeled the Artemas Ward Annex and the original 1903 building and created an addition. Bonnie was one of the twenty-eight librarians who joined together to organize and develop C/W MARS, a library consortium in central and

western Massachusetts dedicated to efficient resource sharing and rapid access to information. She was a member of the American Library Association and the Massachusetts Library Association. During her tenure as president of the MLA, Bonnie saw the need for and established a section for paraprofessionals. She was elected to the MLA Hall of Fame in 2010. Upon her retirement in 2004, then assistant director George C. Brown noted, “Bonnie brought a lot of experience, and she’s seen this library through many years of fantastic growth.” Bonnie was an active member of her community. She served as a member of town meeting, Tower Hill Botanical Garden, the Shrewsbury Garden Club, the Shrewsbury Historical Society, and a supporter of many local causes. Bonnie was a woman of faith and active in her church community. Bonnie is survived by her sister Bette Kirby and husband Rick of Oconomowoc, WI, and her sister Bev O’Brien of Northborough, MA. In addition to her siblings, she is survived by her niece Lisa Kirby-Mangas and husband Bob of Middleton, WI; nephew Brent Kirby and wife Jenna of Cleveland, OH; grandnieces Maggie, Jenny, Abby, Mira, and grandnephew Ever. Funeral services for Bonnie are forthcoming, and will be held in the summer. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Philbrick, Lois [Rockwell] Date of Death: May 1. 1985 Obituary and tribute: The Damascus Courier-Gazette; Damascus, Maryland; by Jill Teunis; June 3 1992; New school to be named for Lois Rockwell; Damascus resident honored in Board's final decision. The (Montgomery County, Maryland) school board voted unanimously last week to name the new Damascus elementary school for the late Lois P. Rockwell. The school which is located on Cutsail Drive will open in December. “I'm very pleased with the name,” said Rockwell Elementary School principal, Phyllis Snelson, “It's so great that it's a local name, a local person, and someone who was active in science.” Lois Rockwell lived in Damascus from 1970 until her untimely death May 1, 1985. A graduate of Colby College with a masters degree in education, she taught sixth grade in Maine and Massachusetts before moving to Montgomery County. From 1967 to 1972 she taught in the Montgomery Public Schools and was an elementary science specialist. In 1972 she left the teaching profession to raise a family. She and her husband Bob had two sons, Bob, Jr. and John. When the boys were young Lois volunteered her time in many Damascus organizations and was one of the founders of the Damascus Y Women. She was also active at Damascus United Methodist Church, where she coordinated and taught Vacation Bible School. When her sons entered Cedar Grove Elementary School, Lois became an active volunteer, helping whenever needed in or out of the classroom. In 1982 she was elected president of the school's Parent Teacher Association and went on toe serve on many Association committees, including the planning committee to renovate and enlarge the school. In 1984 she was elected president of the Baker Intermediate School Parent Teacher Association. While pursuing recertification in elementary education with the idea of going back into the classroom, she worked as an instructional assistant for children with special needs. Lois' tragic death in an automobile accident stunned the Damascus community. In her memory, the Lois P. Rockwell Scholarship was set up at Baker Intermediate School to provide financial assistance to middle school students taking part in summer enrichment programs. Her many friends in the Damascus community thought it fitting that a local school should be named for someone who gave so much of herself to the community and to its youth.

Scott, Richard Date of Death: March, 1, 2015 I joined the Navy right after graduation. I married Mary Webber in Sept of 1961. While in the Navy I was involved in the blockade in Cuba and spent 6 months in Vietnam. I also traveled to Northern Europe, The Mediterranean, South America and the Far East. My last 2.5 years in the Navy were spent in Key West FL as an instructor. My enlistment and shore duty were up at the same time so if I reenlisted it would have meant back to sea for another 7 years. Being married and with 3 daughters I decided that being away from my family for most of the last 9 years in the Navy was enough. When I got out in June of 1969 I worked for Brady Ford for 6 months and lived in Kittery. I finally ended up working for Honeywell as a service technician for the Home and Building Control Division in Maine and NH. During those years we had our fourth daughter and we moved to North Berwick. In 1988 we transferred to to the Home Office in Minneapolis. There I was an instructor where I developed and taught three different courses for my remaining 10 years. I retired after 30 years and we sold our house and bought a 38' motor home and traveled around the country for 5 years. We had a great time seeing the country and we finally settled in Zephyrhills Florida in 2003 we Have been Santa & Mrs Claus at Cross Roads Mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota for the last 15 years. I started while I was working for Honeywell and I used to save all my vacation so that I could do it for the entire six weeks of the Christmas Season. After I retired from Honeywell in 1998 the mall asked if we would continue if they brought us back. I agreed and now they fly us back every year, put us up in a hotel for 6 weeks and give us a rental car. It is a great time for the six weeks but very tiring. I love seeing the same children come back every year and see how much they have grown. I often have families come in and bring all the photos of there kids and me over the years. I am now starting to get moms with their children asking if I remember them when they sat on my lap. In addition to our 4 beautiful daughters we have 6 grand daughters, 2 great grand daughters and 1 great grand son. My hobby when it is not the Christmas Season is to build, fly and compete with scale WWI RC airplanes. My wife Mary had been struggling with Alzheimer's for over 10 years and we moved to Sanford ME on Aug 3rd 2013 so I could get some help from the family in taking care of her. In mid Sept I was diagnosed with Glioblastoma stage 4 brain tumor. In addition to the surgery I was put on Chemo and Radiation. Mary with her problems did not understand what was going on with me but sensed that there was something wrong and her health declined quickly and she passed away on 30th of Oct 2013.
