Biography

Clarence Eugene Sasser was born in Chenango,Texas on September 12, 1947. Sasser got drafted into the army after giving up his college deferment, he joined the United States Army as a combat medic during the Vietnam war. Clarence is a shy and humble man who saved many lives in Vietnam

Biography Cont.

Sasser participated in an air mobile assault that came under heavy fire from fortified enemy positions on three sides of the landing zone. Over thirty men became casualties within a few minutes of landing. Sasser repeatedly ran across an open paddy through a hail of fire to locate and assist the wounded.

Despite the fact he had wounds to one shoulder and both legs, he refused medical attention for himself and continued to search for additional casualties. In all, Sasser spent five hours wounded in the mud, actively caring for his fellow soldiers before they were finally evacuated.

His Award

Sasser received the Medal Of Honor from President Richard Nixon in 1969 for his actions on January 10, 1968, In Ding Tuong province,Republic of Vietnam After he earned the medal he eventually was promoted to Specialist Five.

Sasser inspired a lot of people, his extraordinary heroism is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

After Receiving The Award

Once his military commitment was finished he returned to college as a chemistry student. He then worked at an oil refinery for more than five years before being employed by the United States Department of veterans Affairs.

This is a Statue Depicting Sasser in Vietnam and was Created in 2010 and is placed in front of the Brazoria county courthouse.
