CLARA’S CIRCLEThis year’s Keyboard Festival explores the music of Clara Schumann and her contemporaries. Born 200 years ago, Clara was a distinguished pianist and composer whose long life both witnessed and influenced the fast-changing musical landscape of the 19th century. We play some of her solo piano music and songs, as well as the works she performed in her career as a concert pianist. We also tell the stories of her friendships with Chopin, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Liszt, as well as Clara’s passionate relationship with Robert Schumann.

RCM SPARKS AT THE KEYBOARD FESTIVAL: IT’S A PIANO PARTY!

RCM Sparks, the Royal College of Music’s learning and participation programme, engages children from their early years up to age 18, both at the RCM and in the wider community.

This year RCM Sparks is delighted to be part of the Keyboard Festival. Drop in to test your skills on the oversized floor piano and various craft activities throughout the day, or join the team for the scheduled family-friendly workshops below:

11am | Whole group keyboard workshop with animateur Rachel Leach. All ages and abilities are welcome, including beginners. Children can be unaccompanied for this session but parents are also welcome to stay and get involved.

1pm | Interactive storytelling with Rachel Leach and RCM musicians. Explore illustrated children’s book The Bear and the Piano through words and music.

1.45pm | ‘Have a go’ sessions. Learn more about the College’s Flentrop organ, celeste and our Steinway pianos with top RCM musicians.
