Page 2: Clara's Travels

Why is Clara here?

I am your teacher.

I want to be a teacher in the United States.

I love teaching.

BUT

I am also here to travel!

Some facts

I have been to ELEVEN countries since last September.

Traveling in Europe is less expensive than traveling in North America.

I have made new friends from all around the world on every trip.

I have learned so much about different cultures, different languages, different people, and history.

Page 5: Clara's Travels

Istanbul, Turkey

I went to Turkey in September. Turkey is in both Europe and Asia.

Page 6: Clara's Travels

Istanbul, Turkey

• In Istanbul, I learned a lot about culture and religion.

• This culture is so different from mine, but we also share so many things.

• In Istanbul, many people are Muslim and pray together five times a day.

• They eat different food and wear different clothes.

Istanbul, Turkey

But we still feel the same feelings and emotions.

And, we could still communicate. Even though the official language in Turkey is Turkish, many people spoke English, especially in all of the hotels and restaurants.

Page 8: Clara's Travels

Morocco

Morocco is SO CLOSE to Spain, but very different. It’s in Africa!

I went to one city where every wall is painted blue.

Page 9: Clara's Travels

Morocco

I got to ride a camel!

And I ate lots of delicious food.

Page 10: Clara's Travels

Morocco

People in Morocco are also Muslims and also dress differently than I do, but they are so different from people in Turkey. They speak Arabic.

If I had just looked around, I wouldn’t have noticed all of the differences. But luckily, our guide spoke English and was able to explain everything about his country.

Page 11: Clara's Travels

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In December, I went to a beautiful city named Amsterdam!

Page 12: Clara's Travels

Amsterdam Amsterdam is in Northern Europe and has a very modern culture,

and very well-educated people. There are more bikes than cars! But, it also has a very important history. Many houses in Amsterdam are from the 1600s and it is also the

city where Anne Frank died during the Second World War.

Page 13: Clara's Travels

Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, people speak Dutch as their first language. But almost everybody can speak English as well as I can!

Page 14: Clara's Travels

Munich, Germany

In February, I went to Munich, Germany.

Page 15: Clara's Travels

Munich

Munich seems similar to Amsterdam, but it really is very different.

Page 16: Clara's Travels

Munich

I know this because I talked to so many people from all around the world in Munich.

I talked to people from Germany, New Zealand, Belgium, Spain, the United States, Egypt, and Austria. I don’t speak German, French, Spanish, or Arabic. So I communicated in English!

Page 17: Clara's Travels

Italy

Last week, I went to Rome and Florence in Italy.

• I saw things like these ruins that are thousands of years old.

Page 18: Clara's Travels

Italy

I traveled by myself, which can be lonely.

Can you take a picture of me, please?

Thank you!

Page 19: Clara's Travels

Italy

So, when I was in restaurants or hotels, I tried to make friends! I talked to people from England, the United States, Canada,

Uruguay, Malaysia, Spain, Israel, and Egypt! And in all of our conversations, we spoke English!

Page 20: Clara's Travels

Italy

Italy has a lot in common with Spain:

The people look similar

Italian and Spanish share some characteristics

The weather is similar

People have a similar way of life

BUT, from talking to all of these people, I learned what makes Italy unique.
