PROGRAMDESCRIPTIONClagett Farm, CBF’s onlyland-based education center,is an almost 300-acre historictobacco farm 12 miles south-east of Washington, D.C., and sixmiles west of Maryland’s PatuxentRiver (just outside Upper Marlboro,Maryland). A living model of environmentally sustainable farming prac-tices, the farm demonstrates the relationships between land use and waterquality in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

Clagett Farm’s rolling landscape is covered with 20 acres of organic vegetables, clover, and grass pastures for our beef cattle, and 60 acres offorested buffer. Traveling by hay wagon and foot, we explore the farm, the forest, and our stream to discover our connection to the ChesapeakeBay. Students view several examples of schoolyard habitats designed toslow, cool, and filter harmful stormwater runoff. Students also examinethe “runoff plots,” an activity designed to simulate rainwater runoff onurban and agricultural lands and how it affects the health of local streamsand the Bay.

PROGRAM CONCEPTSHere is a list of concepts and activities that may be emphasized during

your time at Clagett Farm. (Activities can be altered to accommodate your time schedule.) CBF staff will work with you duringyour pre-program call to tailor your experience so that it complements your classroom content. Most programs run on the farm. We can also provide a day on the Patuxent River. Visiting both locations on the same day is possible, but requires over seven hours.
