Found at last! Pine Marten rediscovered in NorthumberlandConservationists at Northumberland Wildlife Trust are ecstatic at the news that one of Britains rarest mammals, the pine marten, has

been found in Kidland Forests in the heart of the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland. A pine marten scat (dropping) was found by theTrusts Conservation Officer Kevin OHara and confirms the long held view of mammal experts that the pine marten does exist inNorthumberland, but in such low numbers that very few people ever spot one. This is the first unequivocal evidence for 16 years and is just reward for all the many individuals who have given up so much of theirtime in the search for this elusive animal. The finding would not have been possible without the help of funding from the SITA Trustand Dave Robson of Tilhill Forestry.Kevin OHara said: This is the holy grail for myself and many others. Having searched for pine martens for years and had manytantalising reports for several years, to finally confirm the presence of pine marten in Northumberland is monumental. He continued:What is even better news is we actually know it is a female and of UK origin. It has most likely come from populations in Dumfriesand Galloway or it may be part of a relic population that has been in continual existence in the area - we will need to find moreinformation about the possible population in Kidland. He concluded: We now have to keep working with landowners and landmanagers to enhance their presence through the installation of more nesting boxes and better habitat management.Northumberlands large forests and upland areas provide an ideal refuge for this attractive tree-dwelling mammal. The scat, from afemale pine marten, was found on a den (nest) box and suggests the exciting possibility that the box has been used to raise young.Although martens have taken readily to boxes in Scotland, this is the first evidence of them using one anywhere in England. The scat

was sent to The Vincent Wildlife Trust (VWT) as part of the VWTs ongoing pine marten research project Prospects for PineMartens. In turn the VWT sent the scat to experts at the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland where scientists have testedalmost 1000 scats on behalf of the VWT. Neil Jordan, Pine Marten Project Manager with The Vincent Wildlife Trust said: Since themid 90s The Vincent Wildlife Trust has received more than 50 reported sightings of pine martens in Northumberland so we havealways known that this is a hot spot for pine martens, but now we have the DNA evidence to back this up. Its a great day for pinemarten conservation.
