Poor CJ Snail can you help? As a charity, Durrell has been severely impacted by the economicrecession. Faced with a significant deficit for 2009 & a worseoutlook in 2010, Durrell today is announcing major cost reductionswhich will include redundancies. All areas of the Trust will beaffected, including the Trinity site, the animal collection & the

Trusts overseas activities. Approximately 10% of the workforcewill be impacted, with 12-14 positions at risk.Durrell Chief Executive Paul Masterton commented, It isextremely sad that we have to take these actions, including theneed to lose staff who work so passionately in support of ourmission. We have already implemented severe cost savings, reducing running costs & not filling open positions, but thesemeasures have not been sufficient. Throughout all changes we willensure that the welfare of our animals will not be compromisedthough, as part of our review, we will be looking at the size & scope of the collection. Durrell has reported deficits for several years covering theselosses from its reserves. Contributing to the deficit have beenincreased running costs for the site & long term conservationactivities. The main issue, however, is declining income, includingthe impact of falling tourism in Jersey which has affectedadmissions to the park & secondary spend. While the operatingposition improved in 2008, the economic downturn since then hasimpacted all areas of the Trusts income, with declines in bothcharitable support & commercial revenues from the visitorattraction. While the 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2009 weresuccessful in generating awareness, increased membership & support, sadly this was not sufficient to offset falls in incomeelsewhere. Durrell, Jan 10

If you can please add a little extra to your subscription andwe will forward it to Durrell. Or what about adopting ananimal? More details on 'Our Charities' page of thewebsite, or go straight to Durrell at www.durrell.org
