By Matt Sibul, P.E. By Matt Sibul, P.E. Greetings my fellow ASCE members! I wanted to be able to pull together certain themes for my input to the Civil Source, so here goes the first: Promoting the Civil Engineering Profession. Perhaps I chose the first theme because I know I personally can be better at it, but often end up using the excuse, “I’m just too busy…”. This is probably the third year in a row where I know I should go to my two grade‐school girls’ classes and take a few minutes to explain and show what we do as Civil Engineers. Maybe this is the year that I actually do it. Would you join me? I don’t care if you use the great resources of ASCE (like the tasty Gumdrop Dome or Paper Bridge to hold 100 pennies), or if you bring props from your own office into the classroom. The idea is just to make it interactive and fun, and let kids know a bit about what Civil Engineers do. Like you, I’ve read in recent years about how there are less and less students pursuing engineering degrees in college, which is disturbing. However, I’ve also read that over the past several months there are certain other professions relating to the, ahem, financial services industry in which interest from youngsters is waning. Why not take advantage of this opportunity?

This year we will be holding our monthly branch meetings at noon on the second Thursday of each month. We will continue to meet at the Bluebird restaurant at 19 North Main Street in Logan. For October we are excited to have Christie Oostema with Envision Utah come and present to us. This presentation will highlight the Envision Cache Valley process, which engages Cache County, Utah, and Franklin County, Idaho, in a joint process to explore valley‐wide growth issues. While the public process including workshops, town hall meetings, and online feedback will be illustrated, the focus will be on how the information gathered was used to develop and model alternative growth scenarios and the long‐range vision. Chris Slater, P.E. Northern Utah Branch
Wasatch Front Branch
Hello, Wasatch Front Branch members! We appreciate everyone who attended our monthly luncheon for September. We had a great turn out. We are also thankful to David Brown with Delcan who did a wonderful job presenting on the UDOT Pioneer Crossing project. Our next monthly luncheons will be on Thursday, October 15th. The time and place will stay the same: 11:45 am at Desert Star Theater which is located at 4861 South State Street. Our presenter for October will be Dwayne Woolley of the Trans‐Jordan Landfill who will speaking on recycling processes as well as some of the issues that he deals with regarding the landfill. We appreciate his willingness to speak to us and look forward to what he has to say.
ASCE Utah Section Newsletter October 2009
We would like to add sponsors to our monthly luncheons and are looking for those who would be interested in sponsoring a portion of our lunches each month. So if you are interested, please contact one of the presidency and we can discuss the details. We look forward to seeing you in October. Sincerely, Corbett M. Hansen Wasatch Front President [email protected]
Central Utah Branch
We would like to thank Dr. Sinha, P.E., Ph.D., of Purdue University for the presentation he gave at our September luncheon. He gave a very informative presentation on all the transportation improvements that are needed and potential funding sources for this work. We appreciate the time he took out of his busy schedule to meet with the branch. Our luncheon in October will be a presentation on the enclosure of the Provo Reservoir Canal (a.k.a. Murdock Canal) in Utah County. The luncheon will be held at the offices of Provo River Water Users Association on October 15. Jeff Budge, P.E., will be discussing the project and its current status. Please watch your e‐mail for additional information. Eric R. Dixon, P.E. ASCE CUB Secretary\Treasurer
Geotechnical Group
The Geotechnical Group did not have any announcements for October. Ryan Cole, P.E. Geotechnical Group Secretary‐Treasurer
Southern Utah Branch
The Southern Utah Branch hosted our monthly luncheon on September 24, 2009 at Staheli Catering in Washington City. We had Marc Brown, a project manager from MWH Americas, present on the Lake Powell Pipeline Project. It was a very informative presentation that focused more on the engineering aspects of the project. Also, our 2009‐2010 scholarship was awarded to Tyler McCallister from Southern Utah University at the luncheon.
Our activity for next month will be a tour of the Hurricane Mesa Test Track Facility. The test track is approximately 2‐1/2 miles long and has been used by the United States Air Force to test ejection seats on fighter jets. The tour will be held on October 23rd. Further details will be included in our announcement that will be sent out in October. We have had a great month and look forward to the next! Sincerely, Christopher Pettigrew, P.E. Stormwater compliance is part of the United States Clean Water Act and is administrated under the EPA. The state of Utah has jurisdiction over Stormwater in Utah under EPA Region 8. With Utah being a high desert area, water is of vital importance. Keeping drinking water, recreation waters and fishing waters clean is a high priority. Understanding what is required under the Stormwater regulations is important to all Utah citizens.
Special requirements have been established for contractors and developers as well as industrial facilities under many Standard Industrial Codes (SIC). Failure to comply with these regulations can place a business in non-compliance and subject to serious fines.
The Utah Stormwater Expo '09 will bring all the information you need together in one great event. Don't miss it.
