In the past, it used to be one of Kesultanan Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadipura. In the mid-17th century, this region was paddy field. This region was named Sama Rendah which means that all residents are same (Sama) and this region consists of many lowland areas (Rendah). Finally, that name changes to be Samarinda.
