CITY OF AUBURN

CITY OF AUBURN 334-501-7274

WELCOME

Auburn is a great place for commerce. A positive business-friendly environment, a skilled workforce, an excellent education system and a high quality of life have all fueled the MSA’s business boom over the past several years. Auburn is known as one of the more progressive cities in the south with a nationally ranked public school system and a diverse population. Auburn University creates a significant international presence with more than 434 international employees and more than 2,000 international students enrolled. Since 1994, 25 international corporations have made the city of Auburn their home. Many other foreign nationals also live and work in the community, and it is estimated that two of three Auburn residents are from other parts of the country creating a cosmopolitan feel.

Home to Auburn University, the city of Auburn offers many of the amenities of a larger city while maintaining the small town feel.

A sense of community pride is created from the university as Auburn citizens and local alumni proudly identify themselves as being from Auburn, home of Auburn University. As a member of one of the nation’s top collegiate athletic conferences (SEC), the University hosts major sporting events year-round. These sporting events generate a tremendous amount of excitement and entertainment for area residents. Auburn University offers many other activities of interest including art shows, theatre, speakers, and concerts. In addition to providing these local amenities, Auburn University is an economic engine for the City. According to the City’s most recent economic impact study, Auburn University and its alumni contributed about $4.85 billion in economic impact directly and indirectly to the State of Alabama, with football tourism generating an estimated economic impact of $173 million for the Auburn area.

Auburn University’s presence makes the town quite different from most small cities.

2015-2019 ACS Estimate: The American Community Survey (ACS) replaces census sample data. Esri is releasing the 2015-2019 ACS estimates, five-year period data collected monthly from January 1, 2015 through December 31, 2019. Although the ACS includes many of the subjects previously covered by the decennial census sample, there are significant differences between the two surveys including fundamental differences in survey design and residency rules.

Margin of error (MOE): The MOE is a measure of the variability of the estimate due to sampling error. MOEs enable the data user to measure the range of uncertainty for each estimate with 90 percent confidence. The range of uncertainty is called the confidence interval, and it is calculated by taking the estimate +/- the MOE. For example, if the ACS reports an estimate of 100 with an MOE of +/- 20, then you can be 90 percent certain the value for the whole population falls between 80 and 120.

Reliability: These symbols represent threshold values that Esri has established from the Coefficients of Variation (CV) to designate the usability of the estimates. The CV measures the amount of sampling error relative to the size of the estimate, expressed as a percentage.

High Reliability: Small CVs (less than or equal to 12 percent) are flagged green to indicate that the sampling error is small relative to the estimate and the estimate is reasonably reliable.

Medium Reliability: Estimates with CVs between 12 and 40 are flagged yellow-use with caution.

Low Reliability: Large CVs (over 40 percent) are flagged red to indicate that the sampling error is largerelative to the estimate. The estimate is considered very unreliable.
