Dear Readers,

What does Cistercian Publications (CP) have to

offer you? Simply put, an alternative reading

experience! Let us explain.

With its three distinct series—Cistercian

Fathers, Cistercian Studies, and Monastic

Wisdom—CP is dedicated to offering serious

readers of wide-ranging tastes very concrete and

engaging ways of responding to a challenge Saint

Bernard once put to his monks: Hodie legimus in

libro experientiæ: that we must “read in the book

of our own experience.”

As Catholics, as Christians, and as aware human

beings, you, like us, are looking for direction, for

meaning, for something true, for Truth itself, for

God. That is why you are holding this catalogue.

Saint Bernard in the twelfth century, and his

brother and sisters of subsequent Cistercian

generations, knew first-hand and still pass on to

all seekers their discovery that the library of first

instance is a person’s own consciousness, his

or her experientia, contemplated in the radiant

presence of God.

If CP had a mission statement, it would be

something like what the thirteenth-century

Cistercian nun Beatrice of Nazareth affirmed:

“Having by a greater self-knowledge set out on

the path of recovery, and taken purchase on a

high place of uncanny hope and confidence, I

keep recognizing more clearly within myself the

kindnesses of my Lover and Beloved.” By making

available in contemporary idiom the generous

words of sages and saints, CP is dedicated

exclusively to transporting readers precisely to

such a “high place of uncanny hope.”

CP is a living treasure house of the sources

and practice of monastic theology over nearly two

millennia. Monastic theology, drawing directly

from Scripture, the Desert Elders, and the Fathers

of the Church, has from the earliest centuries

of Christianity been a prophetic, luminous, and

sometimes scandalous voice. Our three series

show that such a voice continues to play this

prophetic role in the Church today. We invite you

to enter into our world: one that is real and not

virtual; one that, in the profoundest sense, offers

a sustaining sphere of life, always orthodox yet

always alternative.

John Wortley, PhD, spent thirty-three years trying to convince university students that the study of medieval history is both important for understanding the present and also enjoyable when it is done properly. His research and much of his teaching has dealt with the Later Roman (so-called Byzantine) Empire (ca. 286–1204). For fifty years he has served as an Episcopalian priest, assisting now in a large local parish in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he lives with his wife.

The Book of the Elders

Sayings of the Desert FathersThe Systematic Collection

Translated by John Wortley

Forword by Bernard Flusin

The sayings and stories (or apophthegmata) of the early desert fathers began to be written down, collected, and codified by the fifth century. The earliest attempts to codify them are now lost. As the collection grew, they were first organized alphabetically, according to the name of the abba who spoke them, in a major collection known as the Apophthegmata Patrum Alphabetica. A supplementary collection, the Anonymous Apophthegmata, followed. Later, both collections were combined and arranged systematically rather than alphabetically. This collection was created sometime between 500 and 575 and later went through a couple of major revisions, the second of which appeared sometime before 970. This second revision was published in an excellent new critical edition, with a French translation, in 1993. Now, in The Book of the Elders, John Wortley offers an English translation of this collection, based entirely on the Greek of that text.

“The publication of this long-awaited English translation of the collection of sayings by the Desert Fathers, known as the ‘systematic’ version, is an event to be celebrated. John Wortley has provided us with a fluent and readable version of this important anthology, allowing us now to explore the wisdom of the Desert Fathers in a more systematic way than has previously been possible. Wortley’s expertise in the spiritual tradition of the Egyptian desert is well known and appreciated by scholars and lay readers alike. This new publication represents a welcome addition to the growing corpus of useful translations and commentaries of early Christian and Byzantine texts, many of which have appeared in the affordable series offered by Cistercian Publications.” Dr. Mary B. Cunningham Lecturer in Historical Theology The University of Nottingham England

In the closing decades of the twelfth century, the Cistercian Order had become an important ecclesiastical and economic power in Europe. Yet it had lost its influential spokesman, Bernard of Clairvaux, and as the century drew to a close, religious sensibilities were changing. The new mendicant orders, the Franciscans and the Dominicans, and the impulses they embodied were to shift the center of gravity in Christian religious life for centuries to come. It was in this transitional period that Conrad of Eberbach gradually—between the 1180s and 1215—compiled the Exordium magnum cisterciense: The Great Beginning of Cîteaux. It is a book of history and lore, meant to continue a great spiritual tradition, to justify and repair the Order, and to provide a historical and formative context for those who were to be Cistercians in the thirteenth century. As a window into the spiritual concerns of Cistercians of the day and their memories of the Order’s beginnings, it is today an excellent place to begin more detailed study of the early history of the Order.

“The Great Beginning of Cîteaux is a rich treasure trove of stories, visions, and miracles that should be a mandatory reading for all those interested in twelfth- and thirteenth-century spirituality, history, and culture. The translation is superb, and the introduction very helpful for general readers and scholars alike.” Stefano Mula, PhD Director, Comparative Literature Program Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont

I Am the WayStages of Prayer in Saint BernardMaureen McCabe, OCSOAs founding abbot of Clairvaux, Bernard’s giftedness and good judgment made him an often-sought resource by both church and secular powers, and in that capacity, he was sometimes delightful and sometimes dismaying to those who encountered him. But when it comes to prayer, says Maureen McCabe, OCSO, Bernard can only delight. Anyone who gives Bernard a chance will discover teachings full of unction and spiritual discernment. He draws us to continual prayer through an unshakable confidence in the One who believes in our capacity to love without limits, no matter what state we’re in or stage we’re at. He stirs us to continual gratitude for and reflection on the mercies of the Lord, especially in his passion. Bernard, says Mother Maureen, is truly a father—father of the church and father of souls. In I Am the Way, she endeavors above all to allow Bernard’s voice to be heard in all its resonance and penetration.MW028P, 68B 978-0-87907-028-1Paperbackback, 128 pp., 5 ½ x 8 ½, $15.95 | e eBook, $13.99

Mother Maureen McCabe entered Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey in Wrentham, Massachusetts, in 1972, after having taught high school theology and done graduate study in Scripture. She served as novice director in the community for seventeen years and in 2008 was elected abbess. She is the author of Inside the Psalms: Reflections for Novices (Cistercian Publications, 2005).

Gregory the GreatOn the Song of Songs Translation and Introduction by Mark DelCoglianoGregory the Great (+604) was a master of the art of exegesis. His interpretations are theologically profound, methodologically fascinating, and historically influential. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in his exegesis of the Song of Songs. Gregory’s interpretation of this popular Old Testament book not only owes much to Christian exegetes who preceded him, such as Origen, but also profoundly influenced later Western Latin exegetes, such as Bernard of Clairvaux. This volume includes all that Gregory had to say on the Song of Songs: his Exposition on the Song of Songs, the florilegia compiled by Paterius (Gregory’s secretary) and the Venerable Bede, and, finally, William of Saint Thierry’s Excerpts from the Books of Blessed Gregory on the Song of Songs. It is now the key resource for reading and studying Gregory’s interpretation of the Song of Songs.CS244P, 68B 978-0-87907-244-5Paperback, 328 pp., 5 ½ x 8 ½, $34.95 | e eBook, $32.99

“This is the most exhaustive treatment in modern scholarship for the Commentary on the Song of Songs attributed to St. Gregory the Great and the legacy of that text for medieval exegetes. The careful translation and exhaustive commentary of this overlooked text is an important contribution to Gregorian scholarship and a boon to all those interested in biblical interpretation during the Middle Ages.” George Demacopoulos Associate Professor of Historical Theology Co-Founding Director, Orthodox Christian Studies Program Fordham University

Mark DelCogliano earned a PhD in patristic theology from Emory University in 2009 and currently teaches in the Department of Theology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has published several studies of the fourth-century trinitarian controversy, including Basil of Caesarea’s Anti-Eunomian Theory of Names, and has collaborated on translations of patristic and medieval texts, such as Works on the Spirit: Athanasius and Didymus, St. Basil of Caesarea: Against Eunomius, and For Your Own People: Ælred of Rievaulx’s Pastoral Prayer.

Lovers of the PlaceMonasticism Loose in the Church Francis Kline, OCSOForeword by Michael DowneyMonasticism has often been understood as a separation from the rest of the church, apart from the concerns of “the world.” In Lovers of the Place, Abbot Kline provided a fresh vision of the monastic life as one form of the Christian vocation that must struggle to find its place alongside other expressions of Christian life. He firmly believed that as monasticism renews itself for the church, it will in turn renew the church. In looking to the baptized, who discern in the monastic way their own journey, monastics can find new energies for the journey ahead. Having had their own treasury blessedly looted by the baptized, monastics find themselves loose in a world that has become more and more their place and their home. By exploring this theme of monasticism in the church and the church in monasticism, readers will find answers to such questions as How do we belong to the church? and What can we give to the church in a more obvious way? Lovers of the Place weaves together allegory, narrative, and poetic intuition, gathering images and insights around an experience of conversion to the monastic way of humility. Through his insight and experience, Abbot Kline invites all the baptized to a participation in the monastic charism now loose in the church at large. Previously published by Liturgical Press in 1997.

Fr. Francis Kline, OCSO, left behind a promising career in classical music to enter monastic life at the age of twenty-four. He had studied at the Julliard School and already attracted wide notice through a series of prominent organ recitals in New York City and Philadelphia. He entered the Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist, Kentucky, in 1972 and was elected Abbot of Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, in 1990. He served in this capacity until his death in 2006.

The Art of Winning SoulsPastoral Care of NovicesMichael Casey, OCSOIn his chapter on the procedure for the reception of new brothers, Saint Benedict makes provision for entrusting them to the care of “a senior who is skilled in winning souls who will diligently pay attention to them in everything” (58.6). In The Art of Winning Souls: Pastoral Care of Novices, Michael Casey, OCSO, reflects on what this means today, based on his own experience and observation of the fruitful ministry of others.

Here Casey focuses on the pastoral care given in the name of a monastic community to those who enter it, from initial contact up to the point where their vocation has recognizably stabilized. His reflections are not intended to be prescriptive. They are, rather, descriptive of what he considers to be best practice, as he has encountered this in his experience of many different expressions of the monastic and Benedictine charism. This book promises to serve as an indispensible resource for vocation directors, novice directors, and junior directors for years to come. Conversation with Saint BenedictConversation with Saint Benedict The Rule in Today’s WorldTerrence G. Kardong, OSBThe Rule of Saint Benedict meets contemporary culture—the connection points and the sticking points between the two are the focus of Conversation with Saint Benedict. Renowned Benedictine scholar Terrence Kardong considers various aspects of modern culture that he considers worrisome and the light that Benedict’s Rule might shed on them for Christians today. He also takes up specific aspects of the Rule itself that he finds difficult to deal with. This book, then, offers a rich interplay that does not shrink from recognizing both strengths and weaknesses in our culture as well as in Benedict’s own ideas. Among the many topics that Kardong tackles are

“Pick up this book and you’ll find yourself immediately engaged in a conversation, at times inspired or nodding in wholehearted agreement, at other times vehemently disagreeing, and at other times laughing or smiling at its humor. As such, it is a great conversation starter for monastic communities, oblates, and faith-sharing groups.” Colleen Maura McGrane, OSB Vocation Director Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Clyde, MO

Terrence G. Kardong, OSB, has been a monk of Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota, since 1956. Since 1982, he has served as editor of the American Benedictine Review. Saint BernardTheologian of the CrossAnthony N. S. LaneThis book offers a complete study of the doctrine of the cross in the writings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Until now, this theologically rich topic has not received the attention it calls for. The book analyzes and expounds the doctrine of the cross based on the nearly seven hundred references to the cross in Bernard’s writings. Among the important topics the author explores are • Bernard’s letter against Abelard, a work of central significance for this topic• the “usward” aspect of Christ’s work, its subjective influence on us, and the “Godward” aspect, the way in which the cross puts us right with God• objections to this teaching posed by Abelard and others• ways in which Bernard applies his doctrine of the cross• a concluding assessment of Bernard’s teaching on this topicCS248, 68B 978-0-87907-248-3Paperback, 240 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $29.95 | e eBook, $27.99

The Sun at MidnightMonastic Experience of the Christian MysteryBernardo OliveraThese pages contain a splendid, easily accessible summary of mystical theology in the Cistercian school, analyzing it first in its rich human, biblical, and doctrinal connotations, then according to its seven most typical expressions as these are lived among Cistercian mystics, with reference also to other Christian men and women of God. Besides quoting the most representative texts on each type of experience from the monks of the twelfth century and the less known nuns and “holy women” of the thirteenth century, the author’s own comments and analyses of their inner meaning are noteworthy.

Underlying the emphasis in these and all chapters on personal mystical experience, we discover the following thesis: Personal mystical experience is not only the key to an adequate renewal of monastic life today but also—and above all—the foundation, the originating point, of any and all religion or religious tradition. Mystical experience is, in particular and above all, the origin of Christianity and its rich mystical tradition.MW029P, 68B 978-0-87907-029-8Paperback, 120 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $16.95 | e eBook, $12.99Coming in Fall 2012Bernardo Olivera is abbot of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Azul, Argentina. Separate but EqualCistercian Laybrothers 1120–1300James FranceThe institution of the lay brotherhood (converse) was not original to the Cistercians, but they developed it to its fullest extent. Although lay, the conversi were under the same vows as monks and represented a new form of religious life. While monks were bound to the recitation of the Divine Office, the lay brothers were dedicated to a life of toil and acted as the monks’ auxiliaries. Their contribution to the spiritual and material life of the Cistercian Order was immense. By consideration of tales from the exemplum literature, evidence from general chapter statutes, and information on the architectural provisions made for the lay brothers in the abbey and on the outlying granges, this book puts flesh on the bare bones of a life directed by their own Usages. The book is richly illustrated with images from manuscripts, stained glass, and architectural sculpture.CS246P, 68B 978-0-87907-246-9Paperback, 224 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $29.95 | e eBook, $27.99Coming in Fall 2012James France received his PhD from Roskilde University, Denmark. Christian de Chergé Theology of HopeChristian SalensonChristian de Chergé, prior of the Cistercian community at Tibhirine, Algeria, was assassinated with six of his fellow monks in 1996. De Chergé saw his monastic vocation as a call to be a person of prayer among persons who pray, that is, among the Muslim friends and neighbors with whom he and his brothers shared daily life. De Chergé’s writings bear witness to an original thinker who insists on the value of interreligious dialogue for a more intelligent grasp of one’s own faith. Christian Salenson shows us the personal, ecclesial, and theological foundations of de Chergé’s vocation and the originality of his life and thought. He shows how the experience of a small monastery lost in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria contributes importantly to today’s theological debates.CS247P, 68B 978-0-87907-247-6Paperback, 192 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $19.95 | e eBook, $14.99Coming in Fall 2012Fr. The Life of the VowsInitiation into the Monastic Tradition 6

Edited by Patrick F. O’Connell

The Life of the VowsInitiation into the Monastic Tradition 6Thomas Merton

Edited by Patrick F. O’ConnellAs novice master of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky, Thomas Merton presented weekly conferences to familiarize his charges with the meaning and purpose of the vows they aspired to undertake. In this setting, he offered a thorough exposition of the theological, canonical, and, above all, spiritual dimensions of the vows.

Merton set the vows firmly in the context of the anthropological, moral, soteriological, and ecclesial dimensions of human, Christian, and monastic life. He addressed such classical themes of Christian morality as the nature of the human person and his acts; the importance of justice in relation to the passion of Christ, to friendship, and to love; and self-surrender as the key to grace, prayer, and the vowed life. Merton’s words on these topics clearly spring from a committed heart and often flow with the soaring intensity of style that we have come to expect in his more enthusiastic prose.

The texts of these conferences represent the longest and most systematically organized of any of the numerous series of conferences that Merton presented during the decade of his mastership. They may be the most directly pastoral work Merton ever wrote. 69B 978-0-87907-030-4Paperback, 520 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $44.95 | e eBook, $41.99Coming in Fall 2012

EASTER SEASON

Bernard of Clairvaux Sermons for Lent and the Easter SeasonEdited by John Leinenweber and Mark Scott, OCSOThis volume contains Saint Bernard’s sermons for the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter. Included are sermons for the Purification, Septuagesima, the feast of Saint Benedict, and the feast of the Annunciation, all of which are interpreted by Bernard in light of the paschal mystery. Especially in the sermons for Lent, one gets to know a more hesitant and searching Bernard than appears in his other liturgical sermons.

This volume is the third of a projected five volumes of Bernard’s liturgical sermons. Sermons for Advent and the Christmas Season (CF051) and Sermons for the Summer Season (CF053) have already been published. Sermons for the Year’s End (CF054) is scheduled for publication in 2014.CF052, 69B 978-0-87907-452-4Paperback, 160 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $19.95 | e eBook, $17.99

Lectio DivinaThe Medieval Experience of ReadingDuncan RobertsonThis study brings medievalist research together with modern theoretical reflections on the act of reading in a consolidation of historical scholarship, spirituality, and literary criticism.

“Duncan Robertson makes a compelling argument for the re-examination of early monastic reading practices and medieval theory, engaging with modern research on literacy, memory, reception, and cognition. With impressive erudition and remarkable lucidity, he challenges modern literary theorists to explore the implications of spiritual reading for the interpretive process. This study will be welcomed not only by specialists of medieval spirituality and medieval literature but also by scholars investigating the history of reading in the West.” Catherine M. Jones Graduate Coordinator, Romance Languages University of Georgia

Duncan Robertson has taught French and Latin, language and literature, at Augusta State University since 1990. Previous publications include The Medieval Saints’ Lives: Spiritual Renewal and Old French Literature (Lexington, KY: French Forum, 1995), and The Vernacular Spirit: Essays on Medieval Religious Literature, with Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski and Nancy Warren (New York: Palgrave, 2002). His articles have appeared in Romance Philology, French Forum, Cahiers de Civilisation Médiévale, and other journals in the United States and abroad.

Outreach and RenewalA First-Millennium Legacy for the Third-Millennium ChurchJames McSherryThis work represents a novel treatment of the mission of the church fathers, the early Christian ascetics, and their disciples during the turbulent centuries that followed the passing of the apostles. Approaching a normally arcane subject largely through the interplay of character and incident, Outreach and Renewal provides a stirring account of the various ways in which spiritual leaders of the time promoted the Gospel message.

James McSherry is a retired teacher with a background in literary studies. His interests include late classical writings, the early medieval period, and church history. The realization that these elements intersected so dramatically in the lives and times of the fathers led him to undertake the present study. In researching the triumphs and trials of the church in the first millennium, the writer was gratified and humbled to discover the extent and nature of Ireland’s role.

Hildegard of BingenHomilies on the GospelsTranslated with Introduction and Notes by Beverly Mayne KienzleTranslated here for the first time from Latin into English, Hildegard’s Homilies on the Gospels is essential for comprehending this twelfth-century mystic’s coherent theological vision. It establishes her as the only known female systematic exegete of the Middle Ages.

“This is a precise, readable, and profitable translation of Hildegard of Bingen’s Homilies on the Gospels. A book to be read by anyone interested in the Middle Ages, the New Testament, and spirituality.” François Bovon Frothingham Research Professor Harvard University

“Hildegard was a remarkable preacher on the gospels. Through her Homilies on the Gospels, translated with freshness and sensitivity by Beverly Mayne Kienzle, we gain a sense of what it would have been like to hear this astonishing woman shed new light on familiar stories.’” Constant J. Mews, PhD Director, Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology Monash University

Beverly Mayne Kienzle, John H. Morison Professor of the Practice in Latin and Romance Languages, Harvard Divinity School, has published several books on medieval sermons and preaching, including Hildegard of Bingen and Her Gospel Homilies (2009); Hildegard of Bingen, Expositiones euangeliorum, coedited with Carolyn Muessig (2007); and The Sermon: Typologie des sources du moyen âge occidental, fasc. 81–83 (2000).

Hildegard will be proclaimed Doctor of the Church by Pope

Benedict XVI in late 2012!

At Home with Saint BenedictMonastery TalksMark A. Scott, OCSO; Foreword by Macrina Wiederkehr At Home with Saint Benedict is a selection of the author’s conferences on Saint Benedict’s Rule for Monasteries delivered to the monks of Assumption Abbey of Ava, Missouri, when he was abbot there. The author’s intention was simply to share with his brother monks what Saint Benedict through his sixth-century Rule might have to offer monks of the early twenty-first century. It is hoped that these conferences, published here, will now speak to men and women outside the monastic cloister. This book is a door to the chapter room of Assumption Abbey. Readers are invited to open the door, sit down with the monks and their abbot, and feel at home with Saint Benedict.

“This is one of the best popular books on modern monasticism that I have ever read. Anybody who wants to know more about the Rule of Benedict and also about how it is actually lived today should obtain this book. . . . I think it is great, not just good.”

Terrence Kardong, OSBAssumption AbbeyRichardton, North Dakota

Cistercian SpiritualityAn Ashram Perspective Francis Acharya, OCSO; Edited with an Introduction by Michael Casey, OCSOCistercian Spirituality: An Ashram Perspective is a spiritual directory written by Fr. Francis Acharya for the monastic community that he founded at Kurisumala (Kerala, India). As the editor, Fr. Michael Casey, relates in the introduction:

“This book is offered to a wider world in the hope that it will serve as a means of making and deepening contact with the spirit of the Cistercian tradition not so much as it is written but as it has been lived for over six decades by a deeply spiritual man. To those who know of Kurisumala Ashram or who have read the biography of Fr. Francis, it will provide a gateway to an understanding of the interior life of this remarkable monk. In particular, his description of the stages of the experience of prayer will certainly be helpful to many who, like him, are lifelong seekers of the unseen God.”

Mark A. Scott, OCSO, is a monk of the Trappist-Cistercian Abbey of New Clairvaux, Vina, California, which he entered in 1978. From 2000 to 2008 he served as appointed superior and then abbot of Assumption Abbey, Ava, Missouri.

Francis Acharya, OCSO, left the Belgian monastery of Scourmont in 1955, after twenty years as a Trappist, to live his monastic life in India. His experiences put him in contact with such other pioneering spirits as Henri Le Saux (Abishiktananda), Jules Monchanin (In Quest of the Absolute), and Bede Griffiths (Return to the Centre, The Golden String), and led to an uncommonly successful inculturation of Christian monasticism within Indian culture and spirituality at Kurisumala, where he served as Acharya, teacher, until his death in 2001. His biography, Kurisumala: Francis Mahieu Acharya, A Pioneer of Christian Monasticism in India, is also published by Cistercian Publications.

Finding the TreasureLetters from a Global MonkAugustine Roberts, OCSOAugustine Roberts is a New England Yankee, transplanted by circumstance first to Argentina and then to Rome, from where frequent travel took him to nearly every part of the globe. The historical era into which he was born, so fraught with personal and communal soul-searching, also made him wrestle with all the tensions of the contemporary church and world.

Finding the Treasure tells of Dom Augustine’s conversion to the Catholic Church while attending Yale and of his remarkably varied monastic experience during the turbulent years of church renewal following Vatican II. These letters from a global monk will not disappoint anyone fascinated by the paradox of a monk who, rooted by vow to his monastery, becomes a globe-trotter precisely out of deep obedience.

“Finding the Treasure is aptly named, for this book is a treasure for all who are blessed to read it.”

Rev. R. Scott Hurd, author of Forgiveness: A Catholic Approach

Augustine Roberts, OCSO, has been a Trappist monk since the early 1950s. After serving as abbot of St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, he became Procurator General of the Trappist Order. In the 1960s he was one of the founders of the first abbey of his Order in South America, later serving as its abbot. Today he is a much sought-after guide, called to help many communities in the delicate task of adapting the perennial monastic way of life to the needs of the twenty-first century.

John of FordeThe Life of Wulfric of Haselbury, AnchoriteTranslated with an Introduction and Notes by Pauline Matarasso John of Forde’s Life of Wulfric of Haselbury—priest, healer, seer, mystic, who lived in a cell abutting a village church from 1125 until his death in 1154—is a classic of its kind. It portrays the daily life of the recluse, his austerities, the hours of prayer, and his familiar companionship with his God, as well as his place in the community, a network of relationships stretching country-wide and friendships maintained over many years with both women and men. John, prior and later abbot of Forde, is the devoted guide opening up the treasures of his Wulfric to any who care to listen. The work, too little read or studied for want of a translation, is now made available not only to the medievalist but to anyone with an interest in the spiritual life.

Pauline Matarasso is a scholar, translator, and poet, now living in Oxford. Her writings include The Quest of the Holy Grail; The Redemption of Chivalry: A Study of the “Queste del Saint Graal”; The Cistercian World: Monastic Writings of the Twelfth Century; “John of Forde as Portrait Painter,” A Gathering of Friends; Bernard of Clairvaux: On Baptism and The Office of Bishops; Queen’s Mate: Three Women of Power in France on the Eve of the Renaissance.

GrimlaicusRule for SolitariesTranslated with an Introduction and Notes by Andrew ThorntonThe monk Grimlaicus (ca. 900) wrote a rule for those who, like himself, pursued the solitary life within a monastic community. Never leaving their cell yet participating in the liturgical life of the monastery through a window into the church, these “enclosed” sought to serve God alone. Beyond the details of horarium, reception of newcomers, diet, and clothing, Grimlaicus details practical measures for maintaining spiritual, psychological, and physical health and for giving counsel to others. Scripture, the Rule of St. Benedict, and the teachings of early ecclesial and monastic writers form the kernel of Grimlaicus’s wise and balanced rule, presented here for the first time in English translation.

The MaronitesThe Origins of an Antiochene ChurchA Historical and Geographical Study of the Fifth to Seventh CenturiesAbbot Paul NaamanThe Maronite Church is one of twenty-two Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with the Pope of Rome. Her patriarch is in Lebanon. Forty-three bishops and approximately ten million faithful make up her presence throughout the world. The story of Maron, a fifth-century hermit-priest, and the community gathered around him, later called the Maronites, tells another fascinating story of the monastic and missionary movements of the church. Maron’s story takes place in the context of Syrian monasticism, which was a combination of both solitary and communal life, and is a narrative of Christians of the Middle East as they navigated the rough seas of political divisions and ecclesiastical controversies from the fourth to the ninth centuries. Abbot Paul Naaman, a Maronite scholar and former Superior General of the Order of Lebanese Maronite Monks, wisely places the study of the origins of the Maronite Church squarely in the midst of the history of the church. His book, The Maronites: The Origins of an Antiochene Church, published during the sixteenth centenary of Maron’s death, offers plausible insights into her formation and early development, grounding the Maronite Church in her Catholic, Antiochian, Syriac, and monastic roots.

Andrew Thornton is a monk of Saint Anselm Abbey and associate professor in the department of Modern Languages at Saint Anselm College, where he teaches German language and Chinese philosophy. He is organist in the abbey church. He translated the poems of the twelfth-century recluse Ava, the first woman to write in a European vernacular (The Poems of Ava, Liturgical Press).

Abbot Paul Naaman is a Maronite scholar and former Superior General of the Order of Lebanese Maronite Monks.

PREMONSTRATENSIAN STUDIES

Spirituality of the Premonstratensians The Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries François Petit, O. Praem.Translated by Victor Szczurek, O PraemEdited with an Introduction by Carol NeelFrançois Petit’s study of the spirituality of the medieval Premonstratensians (Norbertines), published in the aftermath of the Second World War, remains the definitive treatment of the early centuries of the order of canons founded by Norbert of Xanten in 1121. Petit’s attention to the texts, community life, and devotional practices of the Order of Prémontré anticipates recent scholarship in emphasizing the nexus of theology and lived religious experience. It demonstrates both the grandeur of Philip of Harvengt and Adam Scot as spiritual authors and the distinctiveness they share with others in the Norbertine tradition. This English translation renders Petit’s magisterial work, long out of print, accessible to a wide international audience.CS242P, 68B 978-0-87907-242-1Paperback, 360 pp., $39.95eBook, $29.99

Fr. François Petit, O. Praem. (1894–1990), was a canon of Mondaye Abbey in France and also served as prior of Longpont. His numerous books, articles, and textual editions established him as the foremost twentieth-century authority on the history and spirituality of the first generations of Premonstratensians. In 1975, along with Pierre-Marie Pontrue, he founded the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches Prémontrées.

Anselm of Havelberg Anticimenon: On the Unity of the Faith and the Controversies with the GreeksTranslated by Ambrose Criste, O. Praem., and Carol NeelThe present volume, the first English translation of Anselm of Havelberg’s Anticimenon, sets his work in the context of the early Premonstratensian (Norbertine) thought integral to the reform movement of his time. It renders Anselm’s powerful voice audible to a modern English-speaking readership yearning, with him, for unity in the Church and understanding of the Holy Spirit’s agency in human experience.CS232P, 68B 978-0-87907-106-6 Paperback, 232 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $26.95 eBook, $16.99

Ambrose Criste, O. Praem., received his licentiate from the Gregorian University in Rome and is a member of St. Michael’s Abbey in Orange County, California.

Carol Neel is professor of history at Colorado College and has published several translations and commentaries on medieval spiritual texts.
