We can offer free individual advice and guidance, help with CVs and interview techniques, essential skills such as literacy and numeracy, and help with job search techniques. Andy Pywell, a participant in the “Credit Crunch? Bite Back!” event (see back cover), had been working in a wide range of jobs since gaining his degree back in 1988. Andy’s career in planning departments in Hampshire and Swindon Councils, and later at consultancy firm Pegasus (2007), has given Andy invaluable experience. Being made redundant recently has meant Andy has had to think about the support he will need to get back to work. Andy comments, ‘I was made redundant in July and have kept myself busy looking for work and finishing off the extension we had added to the house I am using this opportunity to consider working for myself and using my 20 years of planning experience to offer consultancy services.“ If you would like to find out more contact Peter Walmsley on 01285 640994.

Higher Education at Cirencester College Several hundred students have studied on Higher Education Courses at Cirencester College and their number is growing rapidly.

For many years we have run a successful PGCE/Cert Ed course training lecturers; more recently we have developed a number of foundation degrees which allow students to start Degree level study locally. Over the next few years we plan to expand this range.

There are many benefits to HE study at Cirencester, not least because it is an excellent college

with a highly qualified staff team. Among the reasons students have given for choosing this route into a degree are:

n The quality of support for students

n Students already know their lecturers and have confidence in them

n Living locally and continuing to work part-time makes study both convenient and affordable

n The College has good links to the popular universities in the region

n Teaching is in small groups n There are good student

resources

Thanks to the vision of the Fleece Hotel and the tutors at Cirencester College, staff at the hotel have ended up with not only a job, but also promising careers.

Roy Gay General Manager at the Fleece Hotel says, “We believe that growing your own talent is the best way – and everyone who has had training from Cirencester College has progressed well.”

Mr Gay adds, “It’s quite amazing, really. The benefits start with more confidence and then more competence in the workplace. It’s very good for CVs and future progress. I think that very often in the hospitality world you have people who join just looking for a job. But through training and encouragement, it can develop into a career. It’s most important to progress people.”

The encouragement Mr Gay’s staff have been offered includes special classes for staff with English as a second language, NVQs in hospitality and management, and an apprenticeship for a 17 year old who’s

just joined the hotel. Others have taken one-off courses in kitchen hygiene, strategic management and how to deal with angry customers.

“One of our NVQ people, our receptionist Holly Read-Houghton, became the hotel’s employee of the year and then won the college’s own award for being the outstanding business student of the year,” says Mr Gay.

Mr Gay believes the secret of Cirencester College’s success is the tutors’ understanding of the hospitality industry,

their flexibility, and their willingness to deliver the training in the workplace at times that suit the hotel’s needs. “They understand the business we’re in and don’t appear at 12 o’clock and expect everyone to stop what they’re doing to look after them; little things like that are a great help!”

C.Side is an award winning spa facility at Cowley Manor located between Cheltenham and Cirencester. Cowley Manor’s General Manager Andy Boardman has worked with Hazel Miller at Cirencester College to introduce apprenticeships to C.Side.

“I think that the apprenticeship scheme is fantastic and we are considering expanding the programme into other areas of the hotel” says Mr Boardman, going on to say that apprenticeships are a “fantastic way to enter employment”. The chance to “mould and strengthen the employee whilst they learn basic skills is ideal” continues Mr Boardman.

Hazel Miller from Cirencester College says “Working with Andy and the team at Cowley Manor to launch apprenticeships has been extremely satisfying and very rewarding”.

The opportunity to work together, means that both Cowley Manor and Cirencester College can co-operate to offer young people entering the work place a chance to apply their training in a practical and rewarding way.

Mr Boardman sums it up for all by saying, “I wish that such schemes had been around in my day” ... a sentiment I think we’d all share!

If you are a student and would like to find out more, or if you are an employer looking to offer apprenticeships, contact Tracay Mead on 01285 653961.

After completing her BTEC National Diploma in Media, 19 year old Victoria Walker joined the staff of Cirencester College as an apprentice.

“I applied to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain practical experience within my chosen workplace, with the opportunity to further my studies. I feel you get a better grounding for working practices and real work situations, whilst at the same time getting training and getting a salary!

I have to deal with different problems and situations everyday which is helping me to learn very quickly and gain lots of experience. I am also benefitting from getting the best of both worlds; working with an employer and studying with my peers. You learn to become part of a team as well as facing individual work challenges.

I hope all the experience I gain in my apprenticeship will stand me in good stead for the future as I think employers will see that I will have a wealth of relevant experience that I can offer them.”

7

Getting paid while you learn might sound too good to be true, but with Apprenticeships you really do get the best of both worlds.

Throughout the UK, more than 130,000 companies offer apprentice places in over 80 different industry sectors. They do so because they understand the benefits an apprenticeship brings to their business through increased productivity, improved competitiveness and a committed and competent work-force.

Apprenticeships are important both for individuals and businesses in the South Cotswolds district. At Cirencester College apprentices receive high quality training ensuring that every apprentice makes the most of their time at college. The college works closely with local employers that can see the benefit of offering apprenticeships.

Cirencester College is currently offering the following apprenticeship training:Business Administration Levels 2 & 3Customer Service Level 2Beauty Therapy Level 3Hospitality Level 2IT Users Level 2

In 2010 the following new apprenticeships will be available: Youth Work, Accounting, Book-keeping and Team Leading

The demand for well-trained, highly-qualified staff has never been higher and the future for apprenticeships looks very bright indeed. If you are a student and would like to find out more, or if you are an employer looking to offer apprenticeships, contact Tracay Mead on 01285 653961.

Fast track to a great career…..The College is working hard to ensure its students leave College with a good understanding of what they want to do and how to get there. Nationally employers have expressed concerns over students’ lack of work-related skills. The Academies provide a forum for employers and educators to come together put programmes of training and development in place to meet those needs. Each Academy is employer driven; their direction set by

Advisory Boards made up of powerful, influential but above all creative and innovative employer representatives who themselves have a vision to create an industry which people want to be part of.Academy students are provided with a mentor from local business, a six week paid internship during their summer break and take part in visits, lectures and workshops hosted by local employers. Over a hundred local companies are involved in this initiative and include Intel plc, St

James’s Place Wealth Management, Endsleigh Insurance, Nationwide Building Society and Zurich. It is the real-life experience of being an employee during the summer that has a lasting effect on confidence, providing focus and direction as the student pursues their future career.

If you believe that your organisation would like to be part of this growing initiative, to find out more please contact the Academies team on 01285 653961 or email us on [email protected].
