Gather round for the Moon’s magical story about a tippetty-top tap dancer who he has been watching at night.

Marina Skippett creeps out of her house every night to shuffle and stomp on the boardwalk to the sounds of the sea. She can’t tap dance at home any more since her evil, tractor-sized Aunty banned it! But then, one moonlit night, Marina meets a mysterious, watery boy swimming in the sea and her life is never the same again!

Following sold-out shows at The Wardrobe Theatre and Shambala Festival 2014, The “truly amazing one woman power house” (Guide 2 Bristol) Tessa Bide (maker of Arnold’s Big Adventure and The Melody Makers) is returning with her critically acclaimed solo show, being called “just everything a children’s theatre experience should be” (Childplays). Featuring stunning puppets, original live music and tap dancing that will make you want to stick 50ps to your shoes and join in!

Amina Khayyam Dance Co is a touring company that uses Kathak as the core narrative in making new work; adding to it other media and forms such as theatre, live art, and technology.

The anguishing story of Yerma in Federi-co Garcia Lorca’s savage yet lyrical play featuring a woman who suffers the heart breaking social torment of a childless marriage, that forces her to commit a horrific and irrevocable act, is set to Indian neoclassical dance – Kathak.

Yerma, re-imagined and made relevant by Amina Khayyam for modern Britain and Europe’s new and marginalised communi-ties, from its original setting of rural patri-archal Spain of 19th century, is performed to spectacular live music with tabla, cello and vocals featuring world renowned musicians.

Circus Shorts offers three or four extracts from pieces that give you a chance to see the latest creations from emerging and more established artists. That might be a twenty minute section taken from a longer piece that will be touring or a complete act intended for festivals or similar events.

Some work will not have seen the light of day yet, but sometimes it will have had a previous life. Either way, it is sure to be an evening of insight and entertainment.

Bianca Bertalot – extract from “Cinco Coisas,” a solo show, involving storytelling, dance, play, clowning and inspired by the five basic needs of a child: Place, Nurturing, Support, Protection and Limitation.

Playful, poignant and inspiring, two opposing but also complementary, viewpoints are presented through the staging of two clowns and a narrator – all played by one person.

On the Seam – extract from “Aerial in Motion,” an aerial choreography performed by two trapeze artists on two trapezes attached to one another through pulleys allowing counterweighting andtipping. The show investigates day-to-day balance and rhythms of life and how this manifested in human relationship, through aerial skills, dance and physical theatre.

Look out for details of the third piece, online.

Calculating the stocks of our emotional economy, Smoke and Mirrors weaves acrobatic exploitations and high-flying distortions to examine the contorted state of America in the pursuit of happiness.

Undressing the suit of capitalism, RICOCHET’s nearly naked approach to poetic acrobatics reveals the inner workings of humans, doing their best to find a place of realness and connection in an enduring culture of illusion. RICOCHET deliver an honest, fresh acrobatic perspective to the themes of isolation, oppression, yearning and hope.

As the dust settles on Birmingham’s 2015 June edition of Be Festival, a new door opens as the “Best of Be” touring season begins. Be Festival will be taking its unique presentation of European theatre, dance and circus around the UK and Spain kicking off a series of Spanish dates at the end of October 2015 and then followed by an extensive UK theatre tour in April and May 2016.

Every night, audiences across the UK will see three separate shows by companies from different European countries.

QUINTETTO

From Italy comes Quintetto by TIDA, the 1st prize award winner at this year’s Birmingham based festival; a razor sharp and interactive comedy and physical theatre piece that packs a serious punch dealing with the realities of shoestring budget entertainment.

#SOBREJULIETA

#sobrejulieta is a one-woman show craving to be a dialogue from Spanish company, Grumelot. Using a rather famous bard (2016 is his 400 year commemoration) as a way to the audience’s heart, ‘#sobrejulieta’ uses English, Spanish and projected video texts in this contemporary adaptation of a love story full of excess.

THE WHISTLE

The third performance entitled The Whistle is by Darragh McLoughlin from Ireland’s Squarehead Productions. The concept of ‘The Whistle’ is almost genius in its simplicity and is characterised by quick fire scene changes and several often funny and poetic narratives. Drawing ideas from cinema, theatre and circus and playing with the audience’s expectations it’s packed with deft circus skills with a hidden narrative.

There is a possibility that God made everything because he was terrified of doing nothing. Here is a re-telling of the story of the beginning of everything inspired by Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, told through words, music and the easily misunderstood medium of dance.

A show for anyone who has ever created anything (a child, a garden, a paper aeroplane) and then had to watch that wonderful thing spiral out of control.

Lost Dog work with text, live music and movement and blend these elements to create work in which dance is framed by stories and characters.

Mayfest is produced by MAYK. To see the full programme please visit www.mayfestbristol.co.uk

Circomedia has spectacular venues at St Paul’s Church, Portland Square, Bristol and at its Kingswood campus. These spaces are available to hire, when not in use for our own activities, and offer creative and unusual settings for a variety of uses.

ST PAUL’S CHURCH

St Paul’s Church is a grade 1 listed building located on a quiet and leafy Georgian Square. The church is home to Circomedia’s BTEC Diploma, a range of community classes and a programme of international circus, dance and theatre.

The ‘Wedding Cake Church’ is particularly suited to hire for wedding receptions, parties, corporate events and conferences, with a professional team to work with you throughout the planning and delivery of your event to maximize the opportunities our circus venue has to offer.

Circomedia’s participatory programme extends beyond our regular public classes to include a range of projects created and delivered with our community partners.

We work strategically with schools, community groups, local authorities, arts companies and other agencies to bring the benefits of contemporary circus, physical theatre and dance to people that might not otherwise to take part.

SPECIAL FRIENDS

Relaxed shows programme for young people with disabilities with their families and carers.

PRIORITY TICKETING SCHEME

We provide priority ticketing to increase young peoples’ access to contemporary dance performances and shows.

FORTHCOMING INITIATIVES

Schools Partnership Programme (launching 2016)

2016 Summer School: Open access summer Circus School for young people.

Onwards and Upwards Circus School for people who want to develop their skills and may be thinking about further or higher education options in contemporary circus and physical theatre.

Circomedia’s Participatory Programme is growing, with new initiatives on the way. For more information about our community projects, or to find out how our work might complement your plans, please contact [email protected]
