OPENS FRIDAY, MARCH 6

In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and ew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal – “volunteers from abroad” – this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride.

SUNDAY, MARCH 8 AT 1:30pm - Join us for a special screening of the documentary featuring an introduction by John Lichter, son of a 1948 Israeli pilot. After the lm, producer Nancy Spielberg will answer audience questions live via Skype!

No one knew a group of children in Oklahoma City were heroes; not even the children themselves. Children of the Civil Rights, a new documentary lm, tells their story. For six years, Oklahoma City kids conducted sit-ins with their youth adviser, Clara Luper. They started in 1958, a year and a half before the Greensboro, North Carolina sit-ins. In 1960, whites joined and together, the group demonstrated until 1964 when the Civil Rights Act took place. It never got violent, it never really made national news, but just about every restaurant in Oklahoma City desegregated before the Civil Rights Act became law.

Feautiring a very special post-lm question and answer session with director Julia Cliord and some of the participants of the sit-ins.

The Oscars may be over, but 2014 saw the release of a tremen-dous number of fantastic lms that went otherwise unrecog-nized. The movie-obsessed sta at Circle Cinema have put their heads together and compiled a list of great lms from 2014 that ew under the awards radar. Their run on the big screen might have come and gone, but these are all worth the watch at home!

World War II 70th Year Remembrance Series

Wednesday, April 1

70 Years to the day since the Battle of Okinawa began, Circle Cinema honors our service members with a day of FREE documentary screening.

Known as “Typhoon of Steel” for the overwhelming intensity of the battle, Okinawa was the largest amphibious invasion of the war. Victory brought the Allies to Japan’s doorstep.

PFC Albert E. Schwab, a Marine from Tulsa who was mortally wounded at Okinawa, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the battle. Schwab’s medal will be on display at the event and his citation will be read. Tulsa Historical Society, caretaker of the medal, and Tulsa International Airport, which has a bronze sculpture of Schwab on exhibit in the terminal, joins Circle Cinema in honoring his valor.

The program will feature historic documentary footage and contemporary newsreels. Keith Myers will return with authentic WWII memorabilia on display in the lobby. Veterans of WWII will be in attendance to answer questions and share experiences.
