The Enigma of
Kaspar Hauser (Werner Herzog,
W Germany 1974,
109mins, subtitled)
Werner Herzog’s newly
restored film is the
fascinating story of the
young man who in 1828
appeared out of the blue in Nuremberg, clutching a note
claiming his name was Kaspar. Barely able to walk or talk,
and willing to eat only bread and water, he became a figure
of fame and controversy among doctors, scientists and
educationalists of the day. Herzog focusses on the
encounter between Kaspar and the well-meaning but
blinkered rationalists determined to shape his character
and his new life. Arguably Herzog’s warmest and most
poignant feature.

From Up
on Poppy
Hill (Goro Miyazaki,
Japan 2013,
92mins,
subtitled)
Ghibli’s new film
is a beautifully animated and moving drama following the
relationship between two students in the port of Yokohama.
Set in 1963 as Japan looks towards the future, they realise
the past brings more surprises than they imagined…
A lovely soundtrack accompanies this rich and vibrant
animation. Showing in the original language version with
subtitles.
21st & 22nd Sep
Planes (Klay Hall, USA 2013, AD,
92mins)
Disney’s new family animation
sets the world of “Cars” in the
sky. Dusty dreams of being a
high-flying racer, yet there’s one thing he’s forgetting: he’s
just an old fashioned crop-dusting plane not designed for
competitive racing. But a little bit of determination and the
help of his friends might just get him past the finishing line.
18th – 20th Sep
Blackfish (Gabriela Cowperthwaite,
USA 2013, 82mins)
Riveting documentary about
Tilikum, a performing killer
whale that killed several people
whilst in captivity. Shocking
footage and emotional interviews explore the cruel treatment
killer whales suffer in captivity, the lives and losses of the
trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-
billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching
story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature,
and reveals how little we have learned from these highly
intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.
20th – 25th Sep
Kelly + Victor (Keiran Evans, UK 2013,
94mins)
Niall Griffiths’ acclaimed story
is a haunting, candid depiction
of a young couple embarking
on a passionate, sexually
charged relationship against a
backdrop of urban despair.
Kelly is escaping a brutish
former lover, while Victor is being dragged into a world of
drugs. It’s when they make love that their darker instincts
take over. A devastating story of obsessive love anchored
by two complex but tender performances.
Author Niall Griffiths will be present for a Q&A on
21st September.
27th Sep – 10th Oct
Diana (Oliver Hirschbiegel,
UK 2013, 113mins)
When Diana (Naomi Watts)
met Doctor Hasnat Kham
(Naveen Andrews), she
found someone who could
see the vulnerable and
complex woman
underneath. This new film
recreates their forbidden
relationship during which
time she accomplished
some of her most
rewarding and successful
humanitarian work. Celebrated and adored by millions,
she was the Queen of people’s hearts, yet the bittersweet
story of the last man to truly capture hers has never before
been told.
30th Aug – 2nd Sep
Pacific Rim & 2D(Guillermo Del Toro, USA 2013,
AD, 131mins)
When the Earth comes under attack
from mysterious creatures, giant robots
are deployed by the humans to fight
them off. An epic sci-fi action film from
Guillermo Del Toro. 2D on 30th Aug.
1st – 4th Sep
Populaire (Régis Roinsard, France 2013,
110mins, subtitled)
A charming and stylish French
comedy with Romain Duris
(Heartbreaker) and Bérénice Bejo
(The Artist). Set in 1950s France,
an office secretary is so fast on her typewriter that her boss sees
an unusual opportunity, entering her into the country’s cut-throat
typing contests. A lovely comedy-romance with a dash of that
vintage Hollywood sparkle.
3rd – 6th Sep
Only God Forgives(Nicolas Winding Refn,
USA/FR/Sweden/Thailand 2013,
90mins)
Ryan Gosling teams back up with the
director of Drive for this violent, neon-
drenched art film about a fighter
whose brother is killed in Thailand,
prompting his vicious mother (Kristin
Scott Thomas) to force him to seek
revenge. A challenging drama for the
serious filmgoer, excesses of style and aesthetics make every
scene a work of art.
6th, 7th & 9th Sep
World War Z
& 2D(Marc Forster, USA 2013,
115mins)
Max Brooks’ popular novel is
given an impressive big screen
treatment with Brad Pitt as a
United Nations worker trying
desperately to locate a cure for
a zombie pandemic that’s sweeping the globe. This dangerous
journey takes him from country to country as civilisation falls
apart: a dazzling, epic adventure that culminates (of all places) in
Cardiff!
2D on 6th & 9th Sept
7th & 15th Sep
The Smurfs 2 (Raja Gosnell, USA
2013, AD, 104mins)
In this sequel, the evil wizard
Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette
leading the others to reunite with
their human friends to attempt a
daring rescue….
10th – 12th Sep
More Than Honey(Markus Imhoof,
Germany/Switzerland 2012,
95mins)
Over the past 15 years,
colonies of bees have been
declining throughout the world.
Depending on the world region,
50% to 90% of all local bees
have disappeared, and the
causes of this epidemic remain unknown. John Hurt narrates
this new documentary examining this startling situation and, with
80% of plant species needing bees for pollination, the dire
consequences for the planet if numbers continue to decrease…..
14th, 16th - 18th Sep
Before Midnight (Richard Linklater, USA 2013, AD, 109mins)
Richard Linklater returns to his characters Celine and Jesse
(Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke) for this intelligent, well-crafted
romantic drama following the two lovers who first met two
decades ago. The film joins them during a holiday to Greece at
a time in their lives where the excitement of romance is
exchanged for the familiarity of everyday life.

Film Society Presents
Went the Day Well? (Alberto Cavalcanti,
UK 1942, 92mins)
British patriotism at its most
thoughtful, this is a wartime
propaganda morale-booster
that, actually, doesn't shirk from showing the ultimate
cost of the conflict. Real drama is generated as a
small but ruthless German advance force take over a
sleepy English village (a plot later more sensationally
reworked in The Eagle Has Landed). Director Alberto
Cavalcanti handles events with neo-documentary
efficiency and William Walton's score cannot fail to
stir.

112mins)
From the director of Insidious,
this is the frightening true story
of Ed and Lorraine Warren
(Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga),
world-renowned paranormal
investigators, who were called to help a family terrorized by
a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to
confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find
themselves caught in the most horrifying case of their lives.
You’re Next(Adam Wingard,
UK 2011, 95mins)
One of the smartest and most
terrifying films in years that
reinvents the genre by putting a
fresh twist on home-invasion
horror. When a gang of
masked, axe-wielding
murderers descend upon the
Davison family
reunion, the hapless victims
seem trapped...until an unlikely
guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.
