Barely able to walk or talk, and willing to eat only bread and water, he became a figure of fame and controversy among doctors, scientists and educationalists of the day. Herzog focusses on the encounter between Kaspar and the well-meaning but blinkered rationalists determined to shape his character and his new life. Arguably Herzog’s warmest and most poignant feature. 13th – 17th Sep From Up on Poppy Hill (Goro Miyazaki, Japan 2013, 92mins, subtitled) Ghibli’s new film is a beautifully animated and moving drama following the relationship between two students in the port of Yokohama. Set in 1963 as Japan looks towards the future, they realise the past brings more surprises than they imagined… A lovely soundtrack accompanies this rich and vibrant animation. Showing in the original language version with subtitles. 21st & 22nd Sep Planes (Klay Hall, USA 2013, AD, 92mins) Disney’s new family animation sets the world of “Cars” in the sky. Dusty dreams of being a high-flying racer, yet there’s one thing he’s forgetting: he’s just an old fashioned crop-dusting plane not designed for competitive racing. But a little bit of determination and the help of his friends might just get him past the finishing line. 18th – 20th Sep Blackfish (Gabriela Cowperthwaite, USA 2013, 82mins) Riveting documentary about Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people whilst in captivity. Shocking footage and emotional interviews explore the cruel treatment killer whales suffer in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi- billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature, and reveals how little we have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. 20th – 25th Sep Kelly + Victor (Keiran Evans, UK 2013, 94mins) Niall Griffiths’ acclaimed story is a haunting, candid depiction of a young couple embarking on a passionate, sexually charged relationship against a backdrop of urban despair.
