The IMT-GT Seminar in Melaka was jointly organized on 19 April 2011 by the Melaka State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN-Melaka) and the newly established Melaka IMT-GT Secretariat (in Perbadanan Hang Tuah Jaya). The seminar was organized to launch the operation of the Melaka IMT-GT Secretariat and as an awareness initiative to make the IMT-GT more known to the business community in Melaka, particularly the small and medium industries. The Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Hj. Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, was present to grace the opening of the half-day seminar. It was Datuk Seri Hj. Mohd Ali himself, who during the 7th IMT-GT Chief Ministers and Governors’ Forum (CMGF) on 4August in Krabi, Thailand, in his role then as outgoing Chair of the CMGF, stressed upon the urgency of the states and provinces in IMT-GT to establish their own IMT-GT Secretariat in order to constantly liaise, facilitate, and coordinate plans and programmes at the state level with the national level as well as with their counterpart states and provinces in IMT-GT. To walk his talk the Chief Minister quickly made plans to set up the IMT-GT Secretariat in Melaka. To date, as made known to CIMT, only Melaka State and North Sumatera had set up their own IMT-GT State/Provincial Secretariat. Other states in Malaysia include IMT-GT as one of the port-polios in the State Economic Planning Unit. (Penang, on the other hand, had appointed a special IMT-GT Committee for the same purpose, chaired by its State Executive Councillor and Chairman of Religions Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Tuan Abdul Malik bin Abdul Kassim). The Chief Minister, in his Keynote Address, urged all business players in Melaka, including the Melaka Chambers of Commerce and the Small and Medium Enterprises, to constantly keep themselves abreast with the programmes and activities of IMT-GT as it is through such platforms and meetings that business players in Melaka could touch base with the business opportunities in the provinces in Sumatera and southern Thailand, as well as trade and investments that these provinces could bring to Melaka. The Chief Minister was present throughout the seminar, responding proactively to the various presentations made by the invited speakers, including the Director of CIMT.

The project construction for the Ro-Ro ferry service to transport vehicles between Melaka and Dumai, Sumatera, Indonesia is expected to be completed in December 2012. The total project including the terminals on both sides of the Straits of Melaka will cost around RM11.2 million. The Melaka State Government had approved contractors Amoy Development Bhd and Melewar Integrated Engineering SdnBhd for the construction of the terminal and jetty on Melaka’s side, but is yet to receive approval from the Federal Government through the Ministry of Transport. The construction of this terminal will take 12 months. The ferry length of over 50 meters can accommodate 48 vehicles, including 138 passengers. The Ro-Ro trip from Melaka to Dumai will take over four hours with the schedule of the ferry ride once a day at 8 a.m and returning at 2 p.m. The project is expected to enhance the economic growth of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and even Singapore as tourists from Indonesia can drive their own vehicles to these three countries, and vice-versa vehicles from these countries travelling to Indonesia.
