There is a crisis quietly unfolding far away from the headlines of

Syria’s chemical attacks, North Korea’s erratic leadership, california’s raging wild fires, and this nation’s economic unraveling. The crisis concerns the land of my birth, the Land of the rising Sun, Japan. While the international news media are focused on hot spots elsewhere, the sobering reality is that Japan has simply been unable to recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami on march 11, 2011. It is reported that thousands of those who survived but whose homes did not are still living in emergency shelters or housing. The Fukushima nuclear plant continues to dangerously leak radioactive water into the surrounding land and sea. and “all the king’s horses and all the king’s men” seem unable to staunch the national hemorrhage.

A warm September’s welcome to all of you on this Sabbath! From wherever you’ve come—whether that’s across the street or across the states—we’re honored and delighted you’re here. May Christ, the Lord of this congregation, bring to you what it is you most deeply seek and need! Visitors, you are invited to a home-cooked vegetarian meal in our Commons following our second worship service this morning.

“i will do a NeW ThINg”

have you ever prayed to the Lord asking him why he has asked you to

do something that makes no sense, that has no obvious reason? here is a true story from the Internet that will help us to have faith in god when we don’t understand his leading.

brenda was almost halfway to the top of her first rock climb. She was standing on a ledge where she was taking a breather. as she rested, the safety rope snapped against her face and knocked out one of her contact lenses. ‘great’, she thought. ‘here I am on a rock ledge, hundreds of feet from the bottom and hundreds of feet to the top of this cliff, and now my sight is blurred.’ She looked and looked, hoping that somehow it had landed on the ledge, but it just wasn’t there. She started to panic so she began praying for calm, and that she might find her contact lens. When she got to the top, a friend examined her eye and her clothing for the lens, but it was not to be found. She thought of the bible verse, ‘The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth.’ She thought, ‘Lord, You see all these mountains and every stone and leaf. You know exactly where my contact lens is, please help me.’ Later, when they hiked to the bottom, they met another party of climbers just starting up. one of them shouted, ‘hey! anybody lose a contact lens?’ Well, that was startling enough. but the miracle was how the climber found it. he had seen an ant slowly moving across the face of the rock, carrying the contact lens!

The story doesn’t end there. brenda’s father is a cartoonist. She shared with him the incredible story of the ant, the prayer, and the contact lens. he drew a cartoon of an ant lugging that contact lens with the caption, ‘Lord, I don’t know why you want me to carry this thing. I can’t eat it, and it’s awfully heavy. but if this is what you want me to do; I’ll carry it for you.’

If you have an answer to prayer or a testimony to tell of God’s providence working in your life, please send it to [email protected] with your contact information. It can be written anonymously, with pseudonyms, or with real names as you feel appropriate.

Wiggly, smiling, excited, dressed up and ready to sing! That would

aptly describe the youngsters of Primary 2 each Sabbath morning. and when we say “ready to sing,” well, it may just put the grownups to shame.unashamedly, and in full volume, these second- and third-graders belt their praises. Their enthusiasm is not limited to singing, though. They are eager to participate in skits and classes and sit in awe of mission and nature stories.

I have been director of Primary 2 for over seventeen years. I don’t have the time or means to be a missionary overseas, but I feel that this is my little mission field where I can serve the Lord. I can be so exhausted and overwhelmed from a hard work week, but when I go to Sabbath School the children give me such a wonderful blessing that I always come away feeling refreshed.

come by anytime, get caught up in the infectious enthusiasm and maybe you’ll leave cheerfully singing, “I’m in-right, out-right, up-right, down-right happy all the time!” or, by all means, ask how you can assist each week or tell us a schedule that will work for you. This

is not a “have to,” but a “get to” ministry! children are a gift from god —precious and innocent—and I can guarantee that you will love the energy that they bring to worshiping god. adult help is always welcomed in our department. Why not join us and get your own special blessing? –Barbara Krantz

m a ny p e o p l e b e l i e ve t h a t evangelism is something that

is done by a select group of people. You know, the pastor or evangelist. The one who knows how to speak eloquently and give fantastic tear-jerking appeals.

as a result, many church members have felt content to simply give money and let someone else do the job. but the truth is that all of us are called to share our faith.

Notice this fascinating quote from the christian classic Steps to Christ, pg. 78: “every true disciple is born into the kingdom of god as a missionary. No sooner does he come to know the Saviour than he desires to make others acquainted with him.”

To be honest, I believe that most people have the desire to, but they would prefer to have some training and instruction first. If that’s you, then I have some really good news for you. on September 20-22 we’re going to host an evangelism training weekend. It will begin Friday evening from 5-7:30 Pm with supper provided. Then it will continue Sabbath afternoon

and finish Sunday morning from 9 am to noon.

These are the topics we’ll cover:• Thesecrettosoulwinning.• HowtogetaBiblestudystarted.• HowtogiveaneffectiveBiblestudy.• HowtodealwithdifficultBibletexts.• Howtoconfidentlyshareyourfaith with anyone.

To register, and to get the complete schedule for the weekend go to: pmchurch.org/go or call Lailane Legoh at 269.471.3543. –Rodlie Ortiz

The 2013/2014 school year at ruth murdoch elementary School is off

to a great start! our classrooms are bright and interesting, our students are curious and learning, and our teachers are passionate about education.

our school theme this year is The 9 Keys to Gloryland based on the text found in galatians 5:22 & 23: “but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. against such there is no law.” rmeS students and teachers have a lot of fun with these 9 fruits of the Spirit

by singing songs (with lots of cool motions) and by practicing each of these things daily.

another focus for rmeS students and faculty this year is adventist history. Pastor Stan and Kathryn hickerson, rmeS 3rd grade teacher, just love adventist history, and they are often asked to present at different events. What better way to share their passion and teach our youth about our SDa roots? each class at rmeS will give a presentation of various figures in adventist history during our monthly assemblies. The first historical figure is mary andrews, daughter of J.N. andrews, whose bronze figure our church and campus family sees regularly just outside of Pmc!

as always, this new school year promises to be another year full of learning and experiences. The greatest thing about our school is that your students are learning everything from a uniquely adventist perspective. We appreciate that our parents and church support our families in their decision to provide this important aspect to their students’ education. –Wendy Keough

The FourTh WaTch coNTINueD

The church in Japan is caught in the clutches of the national crisis. While the church in china and South Korea continues to explode with numerical growth, the church in Japan enjoys no such success. For they are tasked with reaching a society steeped in Shinto belief that Japan is the country of the gods and her inhabitants are the descendants of the gods. Thus what need do they have for what they consider to be inferior belief systems or ideologies. If you are descended from the gods, what need is there for a Savior? christianity as a consequence is a marginalized religion at best, with less than 1% of the 128 million adhering to faith in christ. every morning Seventh-day adventists in Japan (less than 15,000 members or around 1/100 of 1% of the populace) awaken to that debilitating reality.

and so when the leaders of the church in Japan wrote and asked if I would come and conduct a series of evangelistic meetings for Tokyo 13 (as they are calling the emphasis), I knew immediately that of course I must go. For not only was I born there—I spent the first fourteen years of my life living there, the son of missionary parents. I speak the language (terribly rusty now, I’m afraid). I am a child of that land.

In a few days I will fly across the Pacific to Tokyo. and I am earnestly appealing to you for your intercessory prayer cover and support. all summer long we have been claiming god’s promise, “i will do a new thing. . . . i will pour water on the thirsty, and

my Spirit on your descendants” (isaiah 43:19/44:3). but all summer long I have prayed this promise not only for this campus but also for that country. It is clear for both sides of the Pacific that our hope of revival lies solely in the resurrecting, recreating, reigniting power of christ. only the Spirit of god can penetrate the heart and soul of Japan and the heart and soul of this campus. hence we must pray with “shameless audacity” (Luke 11:8 NIv) to the Savior of the world.

but we must also act on our prayers. and so I go to Japan. our weeklong series is entitled, “The hope of the rising Sun.” because that is Japan’s only hope—that the “Sun of righteousness” promised in malachi 4:2 “will rise with healing in his rays” over that proud but desperately needy nation. and when christ rises over Japan—as I believe he will one day—then at last she will truly become the Land of the rising Sun.

and therein lies our hope.

She was paralyzed at age 12. Said to be incurable, she regained her

health later. her father fell from a boat and drowned when she was 26. her mother died in her 28th year. Known as “Lina,” she married a man of wealth who was active in temperance-promoting activities. She was Swedish author Karolina Wilhelmina berg (1832-1903), who wrote the hymn

“children of the heavenly Father,” hymn no. 101 and the basis of today’s organ offertory. berg wrote the hymn when she was in her teen years, and had 14 hymns published when she was in her mid-20s. a common thread in multiple hymn texts by berg is that of confidence in god’s guidance and providence, as seen also in hymn no. 532, “Day by Day.”

Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.

he made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.

he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.”But i said, “i have labored in vain; i have spent my strength for nothing at all. yet what is due me is in the lord’s hand, and my reward is with my god.”
