Dinner with Sinners by The Rev. John P. Leach

Luke 15:1-2

All the tax collectors and sinners

were coming near to listen to Jesus.

And the Pharisees and the scribes

were grumbling and saying, "This

fellow welcomes sinners and eats

with them."

The Gospel for the first Sun-

day in March opens with this

evocative description of Je-

sus’ followers.

For five years, I worked in

college admissions reading

hundreds of essays answering

the question: “If you could

invite three people to dinner

(living or dead, fictional or

non-fictional) who would you

invite?”

Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, Ste-

ven Spielberg, Gandhi, Martin

Luther King, Jr., Babe Ruth

and Ronald Reagan were all

very popular and common

answers; mostly for good rea-

sons.

No one ever invited, or at

least expressly invited, sinners

to that imaginary dinner. Yet,

Jesus eats with the sinners,

the ostracized and hated tax

collectors and a whole host of

socially undesirable dinner

companions. These folks rep-

resent the purpose of Jesus’

life and ministry.

As Lent continues, perhaps

we have all become more

mindful of our sinfulness, of

our own brokenness and of

our own shortcomings. Lent

compels us to do so, to reori-

ent our lives away from the

attitudes and behaviors of the

Pharisees toward the self-

awareness that sinners have in

needing time with Jesus. Un-

like the Pharisees and the reli-

gious elite and the politically

powerful, sinners make them-

selves available to the trans-

formative power of Jesus.

Could it be their vulnerability

imposed upon them by the

harsh circumstances of their

lives makes them all too will-

ing to change their despair

into hope?

The Jesus we follow does not

find hope and comfort in

Wedgewood and silver place

settings. The Jesus we follow

does not find hope and com-

fort in elaborate centerpieces

and small talk about sports or

petty politics. The Jesus we

follow seeks the uninvited

and welcomes them. The Je-

sus we follow seeks the sim-

ple and the mere where his

presence provides abundance

and glory.

I hope that we can all name

ourselves as sinners in order

that we would be invited to

that table where he feeds us

now and forever.

Peace, John+

Reading with the Rector Tuesday, March 15th at 6:30 p.m.

The March selection for

Reading with the Rector book

club is Fredrik Backman’s

New York Times bestseller A

Man Called Ove, about the

angry old man next door and

the profound impact one life

has on countless others.

Behind Ove’s cranky exterior

there is a story and a sadness.

So when one morning a chat-

ty young couple with two

chatty young daughters move

in next door and accidentally

flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the

lead-in to a comical and heart-

warming tale of unkempt cats,

and unexpected friendship.

Please join us as we meet for

a lively discussion of the book

(and snacks) in the confer-

ence room. All are welcome

to participate. Please contact

Eileen Cashbaugh

([email protected]) with

any questions.

A list of the book selections

for the year can be found on

the Holy Apostles website.

Many thanks to all parish

members who participated in

the survey for our Feasibility

Study. We are grateful to you

for sharing your thoughts

about our vision and pro-

posed Master Plan.

The Episcopal Church Foun-

dation (ECF) has gathered all

information and is working

on a report of the results.

Our consultant, Nick Sol-

log, will be here to present

the findings on Sunday,

March 6th during the Rec-

tor’s Forum. After the

presentation, the report will

be available for all either in

hard copy or online.

Please plan to join us on

March 6th to hear what Nick

recommends for our next

steps!

On March 13th, John

Wasilik, our Outreach

Ministry Chair, will be fa-

cilitating a discussion of

our various outreach min-

istries here at Holy Apos-

tles. We will have several

parishioners that are actively

involved in outreach partici-

pating in the discussion, shar-

ing their personal stories and

meaningful experiences from

their participation in these

ministries. This will be an

opportunity for everyone to

consider their role in sup-

porting and engaging in these

remarkable outreach oppor-

tunities.

Rector’s Forum will be sus-

pended for Palm Sunday and

Easter, and resume again on

April 3rd.

Attendance:

My name is Mary Priest. I am

married to Rob Priest. And my

brother, Father Tom Momberg

IS a priest! Rob and I have

been married almost 17 years,

and have a blended family of

three girls, two boys, and eight

grandchildren! Our kids are all

spread out, from Tennessee, to

St. Louis, to Louisiana!

I am a cradle Episcopalian,

growing up at Holy Commun-

ion. I was in the children's

choir, with David Ramsey, and

have such fond memories of

that. In fact, my fondest mem-

ories have always been related

to singing. My mom and dad

loved music, and my dad was

in the choir at Holy Commun-

ion for many years. I have four

siblings, and music has been a

very important part of all of

our lives. My siblings and I

sometimes get together and

can sing some mean harmo-

nies!

I joined the choir a few

months ago here at Holy

Apostles after giving it a lot of

thought. It's a commitment,

and I didn't know if I really

wanted to do that! I have a

wonderful, rewarding job, as a

hospice nurse for Methodist

Alliance Home Hospice, but it

can be extremely stressful, and

exhausting. So I was a little

hesitant to commit to some-

thing that I just wasn't sure I'd

have the energy for. AND,

there's this little problem I

have, and that is that I can't

read a lick of music!

Well.....Everyone in the choir

has been SO gracious and pa-

tient with me, and I am LOV-

ING it! Sometimes, I'm tired,

and just don't know if I can

drive from Somerville (home)

back out to Collierville on a

Wednesday night for rehearsal,

after I've been driving all day!

But, then, when I get there, I'm

so happy to be there!

Music lifts me up, in a way that

nothing else can. I am often

brought to tears when listening

to a beautiful piece of music,

and it's happened in this sacred

place more than once! I thank

God for the gift of music, and

for all of the wonderful people

He has brought into my life,

here at Holy Apostles, the

choir, my patients and their

families, and my sweet hus-

band, children and grandchil-

dren. I am truly blessed.
