27th Sunday of Ordinary Time + October 3, 2021FIRST READING—Genesis 2:18-24The LORD God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh.

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 (Saints John & Paul)Response: May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored. (R.)

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table. (R.)

Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. (R.)

May you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel! (R.)

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 (Beaver Valley Parishes)Response: May the Lord bless us, may the Lord protect us, all the days, all the days of our life.

Happy all those who fear the Lord, and walk in God’s pathway; you will find what you long for: the riches of our God. (R.)

Your spouse shall be like a fruitful vine in the midst of your home, your children flourish like olive plants rejoicing at your table. (R.)

May the blessings of God be yours all the days of your life, may the peace and the love of God live always in your heart. (R.) Text: Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 5; Marty Haugen, © 1987, GIA Publications, Inc.

GOSPEL— Mark 10:2-16The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” They were testing him. He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?” They replied, “Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her.”But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them,“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her;and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SECOND READING—Hebrews 2:9-11Brothers and sisters:He “for a little while” was made “lower than the angels, “ that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers.”

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JAY

hat a blessing to serve our community!

One young and fast-growing group of families is our Catholics from Latin America. We now offer social services in Ambridge because of our partnership with Casa San José. Through this partnership we have space for the families to learn English, to find humanitarian assistance and most importantly to find care. On Sundays at 4:00 PM at Good Samaritan we offer Mass in Spanish and fellowship. This growing community is crucial to our growth in the Beaver Valley, with more than 100 young families living close to our Ambridge church. Their vibrancy is highlighted by many baptisms (such as the family below), and a common thread drawing us together is our love for Mary, who constantly holds us in her heart.

After serving the church in Mexico for seven years, it’s such a grace to offer Spanish Mass and encounter our fellow Catholics from different Spanish-speaking countries.

Please consider joining us for a 4:00 PM Mass any Sunday at Good Samaritan in Ambridge, and please pray that through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we may bring all our people to the heart of Christ, her son.

or the next seven weeks, the Second Reading will lead us through much of the Letter to the Hebrews. This anonymous letter, sometimes attributed to Paul, Barnabas, Apollos, or even Priscilla and Aquilla, was written in some of the best Greek of any New Testament writing. It focuses heavily on priestly themes such as Jesus’ priesthood and on the liturgy of heaven. Because of this, many scholars think it was written to an audience of priestly converts to Christianity to encourage them in the face of persecution at the hands of their countrymen.

In the early chapters of the letter, the author makes the case that Jesus was fully human while remaining fully God. Jesus was fully human because he was made lower than the angels, suffered, tasted death, and is not ashamed to call other humans his brothers. Later on the letter will point out that Jesus became like us in everything except in sin. Jesus also remained fully God because through him all things exist, he brought many children to glory, and he became the leader of salvation, the first one of us to experience the redeemed life. Theologians call this union of a fully human nature and a fully divine nature in the single person of Jesus the hypostatic union.

The union of divinity and humanity is the whole point of God becoming man. Jesus did not just bring about this unity by taking away the sins that divide us from God by dying on the cross. Decades before the cross, Jesus united God and man within his own person. This week, the Spirit invites us to reflect on that fact. In Jesus, God is united, not just to the faceless mass of humanity, but to you and to me. In a way that is who Jesus is. He is the one who gets into the muck and mire of my life, redeems it, and unites it with divinity. Even after getting into the weeds of my life, he is not afraid to call me his brother.

Because of Jesus, my lowly human nature is forever united with divinity. Because of Jesus, my actions take on greater value as actions performed with divinity. Because of Jesus, I can unite ever more closely with divinity through the sacraments he instituted. He shares my nature, acts with me, and lives in me, rendering me fully human and, as I participate with grace and grow in holiness, increasingly closer to divinity.

eenan Baker and Meghan Bohach both participated in YoungLife (YL) during their high school years. YL is a nonprofit, Christian organization that introduces adolescents to Jesus Christ. YL was a great opportunity for them to both grow in their walks with God.

We have been blessed with the opportunity to bring YL back to Ambridge and we are so excited to see what the future holds. We pray we are able to touch the lives of the high school students and help them learn about Jesus and grow their faith.

Meghan Bohach [Conway PA, 24] When I went to my first YL club, I was invited to a week of summer camp. Leading up to the camp, I was told repeatedly that this week would be the best week of my life. During that week, I was able to grow my relationship with God in the best way imaginable. Being involved with YL during high school was a blessing, but being invited back to be a Volunteer Leader is an even bigger blessing. I am so excited to get to pour into the youth of Ambridge.

Keenan Baker [Ambridge PA, 25] Growing up I always knew I wanted to live a life with Jesus at the center. During my 10th grade year, I was introduced to YL and it changed my life for the better. Being a part of YL showed me that I wasn’t alone in this world. My goal of bringing YL back is to someday show the kids of Ambridge that they are not alone and to inspire them to put Jesus at the center of their lives.

WHAT IS ?

magine walking into Saints John & Paul’s Upper CDC at 6:30 PM, and you are welcomed by live music, coffee, biscotti and new people to meet. Then, at 7PM, the event starts with an inspirational speaker, introducing you to a night where you can hear good news: that Jesus is real, that he wants to speak to you, and that he can heal you. After the talk the atmosphere dims with a spotlight on Jesus, who is brought out in the monstrance for Eucharistic Adoration.

A praise and worship team of musicians help you focus on going deep into prayer. There are moments of praise and worship music you know and love, paced with moments of silence hear what God might be trying to tell you.

Before you know it, 8:15 has rolled around and it’s time for the traditional prayers of the Church, uttered by saints like Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint John Paul II. Incense fills the room as prayer is lifted up and the night comes to a close. A small group of people head to a local restaurant to talk about their prayer experiences with others. Others head to sleep, prepared for the rest of the month.

That’s XLT. Don’t let your prayer life be dull and routine. Hear the living God at XLT this week: October 13. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Our guest speaker this month is Jonah Soucey, a new dad, a minister at Saint Matthew Parish, and a person who loves sharing the Gospel. God is here for you at XLT. Bring a friend.

’ve been downtown to pray in front of Planned

Parenthood many times over the years and would

do almost anything to save an unborn life. I’ve heard

that sometimes all people need is to see someone

outside of the clinic praying and they will change their

minds about getting an abortion.

While I was there, we stood on the sidewalk, outside

of the clinic and said the Rosary, talked to people, and

prayed earnestly for an end to abortions. I’ve always

felt safe and I like how it felt like such a community,

united to the cause of saving children whose voices

have never and may never be heard.

—Michael Boyle

We will be praying the Pro-Life Rosary immediately following the 9:00 AM Mass in the Grotto on Tuesday mornings during the month of October—Respect Life Month.

Begins Tuesday, October 5. All are welcome to stay and pray the Rosary as a group.

heavenly help producesthe greatest show on earthI thought I was done ushering when I graduated from Duquesne University and left my night time job at the Civic Arena across the Uptown neighborhood way. People paid to see great shows like the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Earth Wind and Fire and The Who... and I got paid to see them with my red jacket, white shirt and bow tie. I also worked countless Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey circus performances which were billed as the “Greatest Show on Earth.”

I got called back to usher, to help at Saints John & Paul under COVID times due some of our veteran ushers staying home. Now I am a bit player in what is no doubt the “Greatest Show on Earth... and Heaven” when our priests change wine and wafers at the Consecration into the Blood and Body of Jesus Christ. I’m here and I’m staying.

When I started ushering here, I had another flashback of altar boy days at Annunciation Church on the North Side under the strict tutelage of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. They were tough critics. That participation of the active role in assisting in the Mass was something I missed when my days in the starched cassocks ran their course. I remember feeling so disconnected sitting in the pews after I retired as one of altar boy flock.

So much so, that later in life in parishes here and there where we lived, I had to get back in the Celebration... ushering, lecturing, serving and as Eucharistic Minister.

We need ushers, folks. Many of our senior ushers will not be back. The active participation in the Mass assures you won’t—as I was guilty of many times—drift out of focus during the Celebration. It’s flex scheduling. Our boss Larry Mueller has a great group text thing where you can opt in and out of an assignment based on your own schedule. “Everyone is encouraged,” Larry says. “We have many men and women ushering, the young and not so young. We even have husband and wife teams working... they really enjoy it.”

Need another reason to be an usher? I’ll give you a selfish one.

Carl Spackler, AKA Bill Murray, had this to say about “ushering” (actually caddying) for the Dalai Lama in a scene from “Caddyshack.”

Here it goes: “So, we finish 18 and he (the Lama) is going to stiff me. And I say, ‘Hey, Lama, how about a little something, you know, for the effort. And he says ‘Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness. So I got that going for me.”

So, come on, be an usher. When the time comes, you could have that going for you!
