Reflections ~ Reflexiones

TTHHEE CCRRUUCCIIAALL DDIIFFFFEERREENNCCEE A man dreamed he asked God to show him heaven and hell. God led him to two doors. He opened one of them and the man looked inside. There was a large round table with a big pot of delicious-smelling stew, but people around the table were thin and sickly-looking. They had long-handled spoons strapped tightly to their

arms. Each was dipping desperately into the pot of stew, but they could not bend their elbows to get the stew into their mouths. The man shuddered. God said, "You have seen hell," and opened the other door. There was the same round table and savory pot of stew. The people had exactly the same spoons strapped on their arms, but they seemed well-nourished, and laughed and talked happily. "I don't understand," said the man. "This is heaven?" "Yes," said God, smiling. "Here the people have learned to feed one another." CCooppyyrriigghhtt ((cc)) 22001100,, WWoorrlldd LLiibbrraarryy PPuubblliiccaattiioonnss..

All rights reserved. GGOOSSPPEELL JJOOHHNN 66:: 5511--5588 Today's reading takes place the day after Jesus has miraculously fed five thousand people with only five loaves and two fish. Now he wants the crowds to understand that he has come to give them "the living bread." Earthly bread, even manna, can only keep us alive for a time. But it cannot give us eternal life. Only Jesus himself, the Bread of Life, can do that. As Catholics, our greatest prayer of thanks is the Mass. Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. When we receive Communion, we say Amen; that is, we believe that the bread and wine are now the Body and Blood of Christ. 1.) In the comings and goings of everyday life, do you ever think of eternal life? Why? Why not? Have you ever wanted a moment to last forever? Why? One of the dictionary definitions of eternity is "without intermission." If we think of eternity as having no beginning and no end, that is, it always was and is and will be, then we are living in eternity now. There will be no intermissions for us. We will just keep on going and going and going. . . because we are in communion with, in union with, God, the source of all life. And we renew that union and receive more eternity, more life and more healing, every time we receive the Eucharist. What moments of your life need healing? What moments of your life would you like to bring into eternity? What would you like to carry into eternity with you? What can you do to have more of these "eternal moments" during the coming week?

There is a tradition in the Church of the special graces that come from receiving the blessing of a newly ordained priest in his first year of priesthood.

TTrreeaassuurreess FFrroomm OOuurr TTrraaddiittiioonn:: At the heart of today’s solemnity is a eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide. Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. “Before our mind’s eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present.” Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from “Corpus Christi” to “The Body and Blood of Christ” and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even though Easter season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast is aglow with Easter light. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. At

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TTrraaddiicciioonneess ddee NNuueessttrraa FFee:. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. Dear Parishioners, Every year for our Archdiocesan Annual Appeal we lift up some of the many ways the Catholic faith is alive and active here in our local church that is the Archdiocese of San Francisco. This year we will focus on some inspiring examples of people living out their faith, often quietly and out of public view. The theme of the Appeal for 2017 is taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew: “Let your light shine before all people … and glorify your Father in heaven” (Mt 5:16). My Heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the following parishioners who have so far responded to our Archdiocesan Annual Appeal. As of now, we have received $45,000.00 of our assigned goal, which is $112,112. If you have not received a brochure, please pick one up in the Church or the Parish office. Thank you for your generosity!! May God bless you and your families. Rev. Eugene Tungol Pastor
