F irst Reading: Amos 6:1,4-7

In last week’s first reading, the prophet Amos condemned the wealthy rulers in the kingdom of Israel for cheating and oppressing the poor. He continues his criticism in the following passage, declaring that their wanton revelry while others go hungry will lead to their downfall.

S econd Reading: 1 Timothy 6:11-16

Our second reading comes from the conclusion of the First Letter to Timothy. In it, the author, a disciple of the deceased Paul, outlines the virtues required by faith.

G ospel: Luke 16:19-31

This Gospel reading presents the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, a story found only in Luke’s Gospel. Following on the heels of the parable of the dishonest manager, which we heard last week, this story tells of the fate of those who serve self and exploit others. The consistent message of the bible, as represented by Amos, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, is that God judges the extent of people’s faith by their treatment of the weakest members of society.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of September 29

THE PARABLE OF LAZARUS AND THE RICH MAN

“Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table.” (Luke 16: 19-31)

Jesus tells this parable about the importance of loving and caring for the poor in our midst and people we encounter every day.

A rabbi remembers the moment he felt that God had called him to be a rabbi:

The summer before he was to begin rabbinical studies he volunteered to work on a building project in Ghana. For two months he lived in a tiny village with no electricity or running water; he spent his days mixing concrete to make bricks for a new elementary school and his evenings reading by gaslight and chatting with his new Ghanaian friends. It was the most constructive and fulfilling summer of his young life.

The day before heading home, his friends planned a going-away dinner in a small restaurant in Ghana’s capital city, Accra. When he got out of the taxi, it was raining and the air was thick with fog and smoke from burning trash.

Then he saw her: a young girl, lying by a sewer, red muddy water streaming by her, with her distended stomach and jaundiced eyes, her painful look of despair. Lying quietly in the rain, barely moving, she looked up at him, and they locked eyes.

He froze. After a summer of building and teaching and learning, a summer in which he felt as strong and as powerful as he had ever been in his young life, he felt powerless. He remembers:

“I felt like she saw right through me . . . Seeing this nameless girl dying before me was like seeing the demarcation between God’s dreams and our actions. I felt the call not so much as a clear prophecy from God but as a clarion cry of suffering innocence . . .

“My friends grabbed me and pulled me inside. Needless to say, I had no appetite. I was mixed up and confused about what had just happened . . . When I returned outside, I looked for her. She was gone. Maybe someone saved her. Maybe she was swept away. I just don’t know. It haunts me still . . .

“When I came home, I knew what I wanted to do with my rabbinate. To bridge the gap. To take pain away. To cross the chasm between oblivion and redemption.” [Rabbi Noah Farkas, writing in The Christian Century, July 3, 2019.]

In his encounter with a starving girl, a rabbinical student encountered Lazarus, who opened his heart and spirit to a new awareness of the gap that exists between the rich and the poor, between hope and despair, between emptiness and meaning. Today’s Gospel challenges us to look beyond our own self-centeredness to see God in the Lazaruses at our gates: the poor, the forgotten, the isolated, the marginalized; to realize the dignity of every human being as created in the image of God; to possess the humility that enables us to embrace one another as brothers and sisters, sons and daughters of God. COMPLACENCY OR COMPASSION When the rich man urges Abraham to send Lazarus

to his brothers, Abraham responds that they should listen to Moses and the prophets. Because his brothers’ hearts are hardened – they haven’t listened to the Prophets – it is doubtful that they would listen to the risen Lazarus.

Adults: What helps me develop compassion for the “poor at my door”?

Children: How can I share my blessings with those in need?

A Family Perspective: Talk with your children about some of the things that they have that can be shared with others. Ask your children to describe a time when they had to share something that they had. Ask if this was easy or difficult and why. Identify some reasons why we might share our possessions with others. Make a commitment as a family to do something this week in which you will choose to share your possessions with someone in need.

THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN

IS PARAMOUNT Parents our number one priority is always the safety

of our children. It has been noticed and observed that many of our children utilize our bathrooms during mass, and many do so unescorted. While we consider our church a safe place, please keep in mind that it is still an open public place and not a secure facility while mass is going on. We strongly recommend that parents, please escort their children to the bathroom facilities.

2019 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL “FOR I WAS HUNGRY…”

While there are many ways to donate to the Annual Appeal, there is one option unique to people who are 70 ½ or over and have an IRA. If you are in this category, the IRS requires you to take a required minimum distribution from your IRA each year. As a result, this distribution is added to your taxable income and increases the amount of taxes owed to the government.

However, instead of taking your required minimum distribution, you can instruct your IRA investment manager to donate this distribution to a charity such as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this automatically omits this amount from your adjusted gross income. This tax benefit can be realized by all qualifying individuals, whether you take the standard deduction or itemize your deductions. This can be a significant benefit to you and a great way to support the work of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. For more information, call the Bishop’s Annual Appeal office at 973-777-8818, ext. 218.

If you are considering making a charitable donation using your IRA required minimum distribution, please be sure to first discuss this with your financial or tax advisor to make sure it is right for you.

ENJOY GROCERY SHOPPING?

Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey’s House Calls for Groceries (HCG) program provides grocery shopping assistance on a weekly or biweekly basis to homebound residents in Morris County. Once matched, volunteers contact the HCG client to schedule a mutually convenient time to grocery shop. Volunteers visit the client’s home to pick up the shopping list, and payment for the groceries. Then, the volunteer will shop at a local grocery store, deliver the groceries to the client’s home and assist with putting items away. This is a great opportunity for professionals, retirees and students who are looking for ways to create meaningful relationships with neighbors. For more information, please contact Rachel Enderle, Volunteer Coordinator, at 973-451-4128 or [email protected].

STRAIGHT & NARROW FIRE Catholic Charities CEO, Scott Milliken and the

Straight and Narrow Family would like to thank Bishop Serratelli, Monsignor Mahoney and the entire Diocese of Paterson for your continued support of Straight and Narrow throughout the last several weeks following the devastating fire on August 24th. This fire destroyed the building on Straight Street in Paterson which housed a men's halfway house, a warehouse where donations were stored, a women's counseling center, and other programs. Thankfully no one was hurt during this fire, and the important services that we offer were able to continue. The support from the community throughout the last month has been immense.

Parishioners who are looking to help are encouraged to give through the Bishop's Annual Appeal, where 10% of the funds raised will support fire recovery efforts. Please keep the Straight and Narrow Family in your continued prayers.

CHRIST OUR HOPE IN EVERY SEASON OF LIFE Watching the news and reading the headlines, we may feel helpless seeing the

heartbreaking lack of respect for human life. How do we respond? Changing the culture is a process of conversion that begins in our own hearts. When we encounter Christ, experience His Our mission love, and deepen our relationship with Him, we become more aware field is of our own immeasurable worth daily life and that of others. His unchanging love is the source of our God-given dignity, which, therefore, cannot be taken away. When someone is facing great trials, we need to walk with them on their journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ's love however He directs. We simply need to follow where He leads. Where is Christ leading you?

RESPECT LIFE ASSUMPTION Every person’s life, from its very beginning, is part of God's plan. The Bible relates often the wonder of God's hand in the life of a child in its mother's womb. In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you..." The Bible also celebrates the value of the elderly. In the book of Luke, the elderly Simeon and Anna joyfully proclaim salvation upon seeing the child Jesus. These expressions of the value of life remind us how valuable each of us is, at every step on our journey. May we all reflect today on our own infinite value in the eyes of God. Come join Respect Life Assumption as we prayerfully seek to build up the value of life in our parish. Contact Sue and Dave O’Dougherty 973-993-3068, [email protected].

R.C.I.A.

What is RCIA?

RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and it is the

process through which adults join or complete their initiation into the

Catholic Church. Is RCIA for me?

RCIA is for three groups of people:

• Those who are not baptized.

• Those who were baptized into another Christian denomination and

wish to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.

• Baptized Catholics who were never formed in the Catholic faith and

have not completed their initiation; that is, who have received neither

of the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

Would you like to become a Catholic? Do you know someone who

would like to become a Catholic? Do you know an adult Catholic who

never received their First Communion or Confirmation? If you

answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of these questions, I ask you to please

contact me at [email protected] or call me at 973-

539-2141, ext. 15 so that I can speak with them about how they can

become Catholic or receive First Communion and Confirmation. It is

always a joy to speak with someone about Jesus Christ, our Lord and

Savior!

Father John
